Two pages with lettering in red and black illustrated with color images of the US Army Europe Regulation Military patch and the Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom respectively. Signed by Dwight D. Eisenhower below the citation on the Certificate of Merit which states 'Squadron Leader Foster displayed exceptional resourcefulness and ingenuity in his work while in charge of the Display Section Information Unit in Paris from 10 October 1944 to 8 May 1945 thereby contributing materially to the furnishing of information on the progress of the campaign in Western Europe to the War Correspondents.' In very good condition with some toning to both certificates. The Certificate of Merit measures 8.5 inches by 11.25 inches. The Royal Commendation and Certificate of Merit measures 13 inches by 8.5 inches. Before his presidency General Dwight Eisenhower was appointed as NATO's first Supreme Allied Commander Europe SACEUR leading to the activation of the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe SHAPE in Roquencourt near Paris on April 2 1951. President Harry Truman granted him extensive operational command over U.S. Forces in Europe encompassing the U.S. Army Air Forces and Naval Forces in the Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean. Eisenhower's rich wartime experience facilitated the integration of these American service headquarters with SHAPE enhancing resource and personnel coordination. This book focuses on Eisenhower's conduct of the war and provides an extensively documented analysis of the political ramifications of the course of the war and Eisenhower's decisions. Dwight David Eisenhower II born March 31 1948 is an American author public policy fellow professor at the University of Pennsylvania and eponym of the U.S. presidential retreat Camp David. He is the grandson of President Dwight D. Eisenhower and First Lady Mamie Eisenhower and a son-in-law of President Richard Nixon and First Lady Pat Nixon. He was a teaching adjunct and public policy fellow at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania author and co-chair of the Foreign Policy Research Institute's History Institute for Teachers. From 2001 to 2003 he was editor of Orbis a quarterly published by the institute. Eisenhower was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in history in 1987 for his work Eisenhower At War 1943-1945 about the Allied leadership during World War II. He was the host of a public television series called The Whole Truth with David Eisenhower distributed by American Public Television. Derived from a Kirkus review: The younger Eisenhower has spent some six years on this project covering only a three-year period in Ike's career. Eisenhower: At War is a work of dignified completely researched history. Three decades after Eisenhower's presidency a spate of books is being published on issues of his era or about the man. David's view is that Eisenhower's experiences in WW II were the clay he molded into his overall world view which is ultimately crucial to the understanding of his presidency. Eisenhower saw Russia's isolation as a danger to the postwar world and spent the next 15 years of his public life attempting to defuse the Cold War. When his attempts failed he warned his citizens of the consequences especially as they related to the "military-industrial complex." David Eisenhower's special status in being able to call upon his own father for firsthand information and on his father-in-law Richard Nixon's expertise in foreign matters has helped him to produce a very solid work. It is a secondary source but his interpretations are full of acumen and he doesn't shrink from uncomfortable topics such as Eisenhower's decision to allow Montgomery to go ahead with his Market Garden attack even when Ike knew that it was doomed in order to finally dispose of Monty's challenges to his authority. John Eisenhower served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War remaining on active duty until 1963; then serving in the U.S. Army Reserve until retirement in 1975 attaining the rank of brigadier general. A decorated soldier Eisenhower found his World War II military career thwarted by fears for his safety and concern from the top brass that his death or capture would be a distraction to his father the Supreme Allied Commander. This issue arose again in 1952 when Major Eisenhower was assigned to fight in a combat unit in Korea while his father ran for President. After a short stint in combat with an infantry battalion he was reassigned to the safety of division headquarters. In 2008 he wrote about this experience in an opinion piece in the New York Times entitled "Presidential Children Don t Belong in Battle". During his father's presidency John Eisenhower served as Assistant Staff Secretary in the White House on the Army's General Staff and in the White House as assistant to General Andrew Goodpaster. In the administration of President Richard Nixon who had been his father's Vice President he served as U.S. Ambassador to Belgium. In 1972 President Nixon appointed Eisenhower Chairman of the Interagency Classification Review Committee. In 1975 he served President Gerald Ford as chairman of the President's Advisory Committee on Refugees. As a military historian Eisenhower has written several of his books including The Bitter Woods a study of the Battle of the Bulge. In a New York Times review of So Far from God a history of the U.S. -Mexican War Stephen W. Sears remarked that Eisenhower "writes briskly and authoritatively and his judgments are worth reading." John Eisenhower wrote the foreword to Borrowed Soldiers a book by Mitchell Yockelson of the U.S. National Archives. Eisenhower also wrote the forward to Kenneth W. Rendell's book "Politics War and Personality: 50 Iconic Documents of World War II." The city of Marshfield Missouri chose Eisenhower as a 2008 honoree of the Edwin P. Hubble Medal of Initiative. She is the daughter of John Eisenhower and the granddaughter of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Eisenhower is President of the Eisenhower Group Inc which provides strategic counsel on political business and public affairs projects. She has consulted for Fortune 100 and Fortune 500 companies doing business in the emerging markets of the former Soviet Union and for a number of major institutions engaged in the energy field. She is also Chairman of Leadership and Public Policy Programs and Chairman Emeritus of the Eisenhower Institute a think tank based in Washington D.C. and in Gettysburg Pennsylvania owned and operated by Gettysburg College.
