Salih Ozbaran focuses on a subject which has not been studied fully and accurately so far, i.e., the Ottoman expansion towards the Indian Ocean including the imperial conquests, organizations, exploitation of southern Arab lands and coastal African ports. He also examines the confrontations with native rulers, their communal organizations and the Portuguese seaborne forces in the 16th century. Ozbaran comes to the following should not be regarded as a 'linear process of development'; they did not practice the fief (timar) system in the southern provinces, but the method of tax-farming (iltizam) was developed in which yearly and quarterly paid officals and soldiers played an important role. He also empasizes that the Ottomans were not fully organized in keeping the permanent seamen and naval organizations in the provinces facing the Indian Ocean although they had strongholds in towns and in country firtresses with support of firearms.

This work was written with the intention of being a history of the past 162 years of the Istanbul Syrian Orthodox community describing its spiritual and social leaders both clergical and laymen i.e. patriarchs, metropolitans, patriarchal delegates, chorepiscopuses, and the monks and priests, deacons, teachers and the board of directors, all who gave their worthy service and their ministry activities to be presented to you, worthy readers; and we do so with great pleasure. Around the year 1844, under the leadership of Mor Korillos (Patriarch Yakup II.), a few Syrian Orthodox families settled in Istanbul. Today there are nearly three thousand Syrian Orthodox families who have created their own niche in the mosaic which is Istanbul. Through the warm relationship that they developed amongst the local people, and in full co-operation with other citizens, they have given service worthy of the honor and glory that is Great Istanbul with their rich cultural, business and industrial activities. Today the Istanbul Syrian Orthodox Diocese holds great importance among other Syrian communities throughout the world. Istanbul had an important place in the history of the Byzantines and the Ottomans and today continues to be an important city for Turkey and the world alike. It has also attracted the interest of Syrian Fathers since the time of the second Ecumenical Council held in Constantinople (modern day Istanbul) in the year 381 AD. During the Ottoman era, however, the Syrian patriarchs came to Istanbul to receive the firman (imperial edict) from the Ottoman Sultans in dealing with the affairs of the community. Very Good French A small original albumen print photograph by Sebah & Joaillier mounted on paper. Size: 6,5x8 cm. Rare albumen print photograph mounted on a grey album paper taken by Sebah & Joaillier photograph studio of Constantinople, showing Syrian women and men in their traditional clothes. In 1857 photographer Pascal J. Sébah opened a studio in Constantinople, today Istanbul, Turkey. Photographing city views, daily activities, and ancient ruins in the surrounding area, Sébah sold many of his prints to visiting tourists, a prosperous and common market for other contemporary photographers, such as the well-known Abdullah Frères. Tourists would select a range of prints from professional photo studies in the countries they visited and compile a travel album of their journey. In 1888, two years after Pascal J. Sébah passed away, his 16-year-old son Jean (Johannes) became involved in the studio work. Jean started a partnership with another photographer from Istanbul, the Frenchman Policarpe Joaillier, which became a great success. Jean worked both on assignments for the studio and as an individual photographer, which can be determined from the signatures on the works: some prints were signed "Sébah & Joaillier," and others have the signature "J.P. Sébah" The studio flourished and Sébah & Joaillier were named as the official photographers of the Ottoman Empire by the Turkish sultan. In the early 1900s, Joaillier returned to Paris and Sébah continued his work in Constantinople. After different partnerships, the studio was taken over by Ismail Insel and renamed "Foto Sabah" [i.e. Photo Morning].
