‎New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (30 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 334 p., color and b/w ills. Architect of Sultan Abdulmecid: William James Smith.= Sultan Abdulmecid'in bir mimari: William James Smith. An English architect William James Smith had worked in Istanbul from 1842 to 1856, a most politically influential period for the British Empire. Smith, after his appointment to the prestigious project for the new Istanbul Embassy Building of United Kingdom, whose conceptual design was probably by renowned architect Sir Charles Barry, had attained the interest and trust of Ottoman statesmen. Consequently he was assigned to realise a number of important architectural projects contributing to the modernization of Ottoman Architecture. Some of the Smith¿s important works for the Ottoman Porte are: A military hospital [Gumussuyu Askeri Hastanesi], a naval hospital, a school of medicine later known as Mecidiye Kislasi then Taskisla, a part of the Selimiye Barracks, a Glass Pavilion in Dolmabahce Palace and Tophane Imperial Kiosk [Tophane Kasri] for Sultan Abdulmecid; a building for the Board of Trade, renovation of the Naum Theatre. His commissions for so many important buildings, in spite of the presence of the notable architects, namely Balyan and Fossati, is a proof of Sultan¿s appreciation of Smith¿s works. Smith worked for both the British Empire and the Ottoman Sultan for a considerable number of grand scale projects. Being Smith¿s first work of grand scale, Taskisla has had a major role in the history of the Ottoman Empire and Istanbul in addition to its own interesting construction history.‎

Abdulhamid's expenditures on his personal budget from September 1, 1876 to September 1, 1900 were published in book form by Tahir Bey, monuments which were restored, the state policies and activities of the period were presented in the name of the Ottoman subjects. The Sultan Abdülhamid gives many important clues about the policies towards the understanding of the Ottoman Sultan and the Islamic Caliphate when he examined many of the new and valuable information about Sultan Abdülhamid II and the unique visual materials of the revolution.‎

Journey to the center of the East, 1850-1950. 100 years of travelers in Istanbul from Pierre de Gigord Collection.= Dogu'nun merkezine seyahat, 1850-1950. Pierre de Gigord Koleksiyonu'ndan Istanbul'da gezginlerin 100 yili. [Exhibition catalogue]. Coordinated by Zeynep Ögel, Erkan Bora, Gülru Tanman. This exhibition tells the tale of the Istanbul-centred travels of curious Westerners, who ventured out to the East from the 18th century onwards. Geographers, archaeologists, linguists, architects, botanist and clergymen all travelled across the East from the late 18th until the mid-19th century researching their particular interests. After the Crimean War, the expedition-oriented travel that was so popular until the 1850s was replaced by a different kind of travel. The objective was no longer information gathering, but tourism. Based on materials selected from the vast collection of Pierre de Gigord, one of the leading collectors of Ottoman-era photographs and ephemera, this exhibition sheds light on the early years of mass tourism that replaced individual journeys of discovery and transformed travel culture.‎

‎Fine French Original bdg. HC. 4to. In French and Turkish. 168 p., ills. Pierre Loti et les silhouettes de Hassan: Portraits avant La II. Constitution.= Pierre Loti ve Hasan silüetleri: II. Mesrutiyet öncesi portreler. The novelist Julien Viaud, famous for his nickname Pierre Loti, is a traveling maritime officer. At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, he makes seven trips to Istanbul. In 1903, at the age of 53, Pierre Loti takes over Le Vautour, the first station ship to the French Embassy in Istanbul, during his fifth trip to Turkey. In the same period, Hasan signed cartoons start to circulate in Istanbul. The person who is hiding under Hasan is actually Robert de Guiroye, a naval officer. This person was then assigned to the auxiliary ship "La Mouette" (Seagull) under the command of Pierre Loti. It is thought that this officer made drawings on this ship in the evening after having spent a long time in important social clubs such as Cercle d'Orient, Pera Palas Ballroom, Tepebasi Theater. Who is actually Hasan / Who is the real Hasan? The answer to this problem is in the exhibition and detailed catalog. Let's see if they can help bring Hasan's identity to light. The "Pierre Loti and Hasan Silhouettes" exhibition is made up of documents obtained as a result of years of research by numerous collections and valuable collector Sayen Erol Makzume, who has vast knowledge of Hasan's lithographs in the early 20th century. The exhibition contains texts, cartoons and in-depth information, and sheds light on the transition period of Turkey after the Second Constitutional Monarchy.‎

Kagithane Province of Istanbul (Constantinople) City based on Ottoman archival documents. "Kagithane (Turkish pronunciation: [ka??t'ha?ne]) is a working class district of the city of Istanbul, Turkey, in a valley inland from the upmarket Etiler. Built along a stream that runs into the Golden Horn. In the time of Suleiman the Magnificent the valley was known as 'Sadabad' and used by the Ottoman court for hunting, riding and equestrian sports. The valley was full of wonderful tulip fields and in spring people would come along the stream for picnics and days out of the city. There are records of gatherings such as wedding parties being held here. By the late Ottoman period the valley floor had been drained, weekend homes had been built in the valley with lovely gardens, and the area led into the richly forested parks of Kagithane and Alibeyköy ideal for parties and picnics. The Ottoman gunpowder factory was the first industrial activity in the valley and dated back to the early Ottoman sultan Bayezid II. Kagithane then became home to numerous factories including flour mills and the paper factories that give the area its name. The area was still far from the city and not heavily populated until the late 20th century. Until then there were gypsy camps in the valley (and there is still a large gypsy community in Gültepe today). Real growth came to Kagithane from the 1950s onwards, as the area was settled by migrants from Anatolia, who came to work in the factories, workshops or building sites. They built small cottages on the valley sides, then brought family, friends and neighbours from the village to live in one of the rooms while they built their own cottages nearby. As many Turkish rural areas have been impoverished for decades there has been no shortage of people prepared to opt for this lifestyle in Istanbul. None of this building was regulated or controlled in any meaningful way and whenever there is a big rain people in Kagithane are flooded out of their homes. And the houses were scattered all over the sides of the valley with no thought for where they could put roads, drains or any other infrastructure. And Istanbul is vulnerable to earthquakes. This working class district was a centre of left-wing support during the years of political violence in the 1970s. From the 1970s onwards as the second generation grew up the cottages have been pulled down and replaced with grubby, bare-walled six-storey apartment buildings to house the offspring of these families. Kagithane develops".‎

Kagithane develops". A very heavy volume. Extra shipping fee will be requested. CONSTANTINOPLE Ottoman culture State archives Ottoman history Istanbul Byzantium Urban history.‎

‎The Historic Plant Collection of Istanbul's Saint Joseph High School.= Istanbul Saint Joseph Lisesi Tarihi Bitki Koleksiyonu. 2 volumes set.‎

‎New English Original bdg. In publisher's special slip-case. 4to. (35 x 25 cm). In English and Turkish. Many color and b/w plates. 2 volumes set: (1119 p.). In 1905, three frères (priest-teachers) at Saint Joseph High School in Constantinople - and their pupils began to collect plants from both sides of the Bosphorus, particularly around Kadiköy. Their aim was to create a comprehensive herbarium (plant collection). Before drying the first specimens, the frères classified them according to the biologic and botanic knowledge of the day, and then recorded this information on specially-prepared labels. The frères pursued their endeavour, despite occasional interruptions, until the mid-1970s. The result was a 2,253-specimen herbarium from Istanbul-Kadiköy and its environs: the first and only extant such collection. Continuing the European tradition of taking inventory of the natural world, these three valuable teachers at Saint Joseph conducted scientific research on the flora of Istanbul, a magnificent city that is the common heritage of human civilization, and then preserved the fruit of their labour for all of humanity. This unique plant collection lay dormant in Saint Joseph High School until it was unearthed by Professor Mehmet Sakinç. Devoting long years to studying the collection's 2,253 specimens in light of new scientific developments, Professor Sakinç identified 1006 distinct species - all of which appear in this book under 436 genus and 87 families.‎
