Greek text and Latin translation in parallel columns with Latin commentary with quotations and examples in Greek at foot of each page. A few gatherings heavily toned and foxed faint intermittent dampstain to lower margin occasional marks and scorches 3Q2 has closed tear to lower margin extending onto text but with no loss. Vellum prize binding gilt spine with raised bands gilt frames and borders centre- and corner-pieces with the arms of Amsterdam to both boards. A few smudgy marks and small stains to vellum corners lightly bumped ties lost very good. Written by the sixth century grammarian Stephen of Byzantium and dedicated to Emperor Justinian the original form of this geographical dictionary is lost. The text that we have is an epitome possibly by a scholar called Hermolaus. Sections of the original can also be found in works of Constantine Porphyrogenitos. The city of Nicaea was located near a large lake and fertile plain, which was the main reason of city's importance through the ages. Notable for its climate and geographical features, it was a socio-political and economic centre of the Bithynia. It has always been one of the most important cities in the region during the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuks and Ottoman periods. Although the Roman Theatre is the most striking structure of the city, other architectural remains such as tombs, bridges, aqueducts, city walls and gates are still standing. The Roman theatre at Nicaea is located in the southwestern part of the city, close to the city walls and Lake Iznik (Ascania Limme). One of the most impressive archeological buildings in Anatolia, the theatre has been a frequent destination for western travellers for many years. The first scientific studies on the theatre were conducted in 1938 by A. M. Schneider in order to have a better idea of the substructures. The excavations revealed that the theatre was built on a Hellenistic stratum. Although it ceased to function as a theatre in the Late Roman Period (4th cent. AD), it was used for different purposes in the Byzantine and Ottoman periods.

The time frame of the book is more functional than academic, it begins with the New Testament and ends in 1453. The book's layout is unique and userfriendly. It contains 300 short descriptive "profiles" that are listed numerically (1 to 300), with no chapters. The numbering system allows for crossreferencing within the individual "profiles." The book also includes two table of contents, one chronological and the other geographical. The goal of the book is help people worldwide not only discover that Turkey is the land of the Bible, but it is also the primary and central land of the early church. There is no other book of its kind available today.

This offprint from the Greek journal published in a long run from 1928 to 1961 in 24 volumes, examines the 14th-century coastline of the Byzantine Empire of Trebizond with toponyms and topography on two portolan maps of the period. "Bryer was a British historian of the Byzantine Empire and founder of the Centre for Byzantine, Ottoman, and Modern Greek Studies at the University of Birmingham. Part of his childhood was spent in Jerusalem and he was acquainted with Sir Steven Runciman, historian, and Byzantine Scholar. He initially remained at Balliol for his doctorate on the Empire of Trebizond, which he completed in 1967, but in 1964 he moved to the University of Birmingham where he created a program in Byzantine studies. In 1975 he founded the journal Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies. From 1976, he was the founding Director of the Centre for Byzantine Studies, and in 1980 he was appointed Professor of Byzantine Studies, a post which he held until 1999." (Wikipedia). Not in OCLC.

Bununla birlikte 1968 Keban Baraj Alani kurtarma kazilarinin getirdigi ivme ve heyecan giderek tum ulkeye yayilmis ve Turkiye?de bir ?arkeoloji patlamasi? yasanmistir. Turkiye halen, bolgesinin arkeolojik bakimdan en az arastirmis ulkesi konumundadir; bazi bolgelerimizin gecmisiyle ilgili hicbir bilgimiz olmadigi gibi, ulkemizin topraklarinda gelisen bircok ozgun kulturu de ancak yeni yeni tanimaya basladik. Arastirmalarin bu kisitliligina karsin son 20-30 yil icinde ortaya cikan sonuclar, dunya uygarliginin gelisim surecine bakisimizi tumuyle degistirecek kadar onemli ve carpici olmus, dusunce sistemimizi zorlamaya baslamistir. Uzun yillar Anadolu ve cevresindeki ulkelerde calismis olan meslektaslarimiz Antonio Sagona ve Paul Zimansky, ortaya cikan yeni bulgularin isinda Anadolu ve Trakya?nin tarihoncesi ve ontarih donemlerini ele alarak yeniden degerlendirmis, Anadolu?nun uygarligin gelisim sureci acisindan tasidigi onemi vurgulamislardir. Son yillarda ortaya cikan bilginin alisilagelenden farkliligi ve yogunlugu, geleneksel kaliplari oylesine zorlamaktadir ki, ortaya cikan yeni tabloyu konunun uzmanlari olarak bile algilamakta gucluk cekmekteyiz. Onceki yillarda Alacahoyuk ve daha sonra Catalhoyuk buluntularinin yarattigi saskinligi, gunumuzde Gobekli Tepe, Kortik Tepe, Asikli Hoyuk, Tepecik-Ciftlik, Seyitomer ve Kulluoba gibi cok sayida kazi yerinde yasamaktayiz. Bu yeni bulgularin uygarlik tarihine bakis acimiza dogru olarak yansiyabilmesi icin kuskusuz zamana gerek vardir. Yazarlar bu kitapla guc olani basarmis, baslangicindan Demir Cagi?nin iclerine kadar olan sureci cesitli yonleriyle ele almislardir. Kitap bir yanda donemsel, kulturel ve bolgesel farkliliklari cok acik bir bicimde vurgularken, ayni zamanda butuncul bir bakis acisini kaybetmeden kulturel surekliligi yansitabilmistir.
