The exhibition "Hippodrome/ Atmeydani: A Stage for Istanbul's History" takes the visitor on a tour of one of the major architectural achievements of Byzantine Constantinople. Images from the fifteenth and early sixteenth century show the structure of the Hippodrome to have been fairly well preserved at the time of the Ottoman conquest. The construction of Ottoman palaces and the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, however, played a major role in the dismantling of the remains of the Hippodrome. Nevertheless, this large open space's association with horses was preserved. It became known as Atmeydani (Horse Square) during the Ottoman era and was used for playing the equestrian game cirit. The Ottomans and the sultans also continued to hold celebrations and public spectacles in the area. Visitors to the Hippodrome today can view its three surviving monuments-the masonry obelisk, the Serpent Column, and the Egyptian obelisk-but few can easily imagine the splendor and size of the original Hippodrome that stood for more than eleven centuries."The Hippodrome/ Atmeydani: Istanbul's Stage of History" exhibition almost rebuilds the magnificent Hippodrome decorated with exceptionally beautiful monuments and the Atmeydani of the Ottoman period, and examines the life surrounding them.

"The project that is supported by the Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency, opens the destructions and reconstructions in the city to discussion through 12 selected from different historical eras of Istanbul considering different destruction causes and they form the framework of the exhibition. After an in depth research, the question 'what would have happened if these destruction never took place?' was the starting point for the creation of different urban scenarios about the buildings. The results are shared through in-situ installations, the main exhibition and the exhibition catalogue. 15th September - 23th December 2010".

Abdulhamid's expenditures on his personal budget from September 1, 1876 to September 1, 1900 were published in book form by Tahir Bey, monuments which were restored, the state policies and activities of the period were presented in the name of the Ottoman subjects. The Sultan Abdülhamid gives many important clues about the policies towards the understanding of the Ottoman Sultan and the Islamic Caliphate when he examined many of the new and valuable information about Sultan Abdülhamid II and the unique visual materials of the revolution.

Constantinople suffered so many natural disasters and had to be rebuilt so many times that the mosaics which decorated the buildings of the late Roman/early Byzantine period, lie under modern buildings in the debris of fires and earthquakes. Unless some of these are encountered accidentally during construction work and salvaged, there is almost no hope of bringing them to light.".

This account is not confined to the city's excellent climate, which Evliyâ attributes to "the gentle breezes that blow constantly throughout summer and autumn, since the city lies beneath Mount Erciyes in the centre of Anatolia, open to the north and west but closed to the pernicious southwesterly winds", and to the marvellous cured beef and garlic sausage "sent as gifts to rulers", but seeks to embrace its entire legacy and culture in a broad sweep extending from antiquity to the Seljuks, Ottomans and the present day, including its monumental and vernacular architecture, Mount Erciyes, stuffed dumplings and music. In City of the Caesars Kayseri the reader is taken on a step by step journey tracing the past of the city and province, from Erkilet to Tavlusun, Germir, Talas, Soganli and Gesi, recording all its memorable aspects not just in writing but in lavish illustrations. Fikri Kulakoglu has written about Kültepe/Kanesh, Anatolia's ancient international trading centre; Nilay Çoragan Karakaya about Kayseri's Roman and Byzantine monuments; Mustafa Çayirdag about the Seljuk period; Seyda Güngör Açikgöz about the Ottoman period; and Vacit Imamoglu about daily life and vernacular architecture. Artamonoff [Nicolas V.]: Picturing Byzantine Istanbul, 1930-1947.

Displayed at Pera Museum, Kariye, from Theodoros Metokhites to Thomas Whittemore; One Monument, Two Monumental Personalities is comprised largely of objects and documents on loan from abroad, the exhibition narrates the story of Kraiye, one of the globally renowned monuments of Istanbul, as well as the extraordinary tales of two of its 'builders', who lived six centuries apart. At one end stands fellow townsman Theodoros Metokhites, Byzantine thinker, poet and politician, who shaped Kariye at the turn of the 14th century and adorned it with priceless mosaics and frescoes. On the other end is American renaissance man and archaeologist Thomas Whittemore, who passionately and meticulously restored this structure to its former grandeur in the 1940s, consequently bestowing it to the world of culture and art as a museum. In between lies the unconventional story of a structure shaped by the footprints of these remarkable men. The former church of the monastery of Christ of the Chora, better known today as the Kariye Camisi or Kariye Museum, is one of the most impressive Byzantine monuments to survive in the modern city of Istanbul. Founded probably as early as the sixth century, rebuilt by members of the imperial family in the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries, and splendidly restored by the Byzantine humanist, poet, and prime minister Theodore Metochites between 1316 and 1321, the church of the Chora Monastery is today considered one of the most outstanding examples of Late Byzantine art and architecture to survive. While the building itself was already known as the 'Mosaic Mosque' during the nineteenth century, the fame of the church's rich and complex interior decoration rests by and large on an extensive restoration campaign initiated by the American scholar and philanthropist Thomas Whittemore, founder and director of the Byzantine Institute of America from 1930 to his death in 1950. It was the aim of this exhibition, to explore the history of the "Kariye" through its representation over the centuries, and to pay homage to the two men who were responsible for its restoration and conservation in the fourteenth and twentieth centuries respectively: Theodore Metochites and Thomas Whittemore. The exhibition furthermore aimed to celebrate the work of those who have helped to preserve the architecture of the Kariye and its extraordinary cycle of mosaics and frescoes during the 1940s and 1950s.

The studies he made of Islamic, Seljuk, and, especially, Ottoman art and architecture, as well as of Byzantine art; the classes he taught at the universities of Vienna and Munich on these topics; and the countless study trips he made around the Eastern Mediterranean, including to Istanbul and Anatolia, made him an expert in the field of architecture, especially in the systematic documentation of buildings. "Archival Memories" on the one hand informs viewers about how a researcher organized his working day, how he systematically allotted his time, and what methods he used in the pre-digital age. On the other hand, it aims to present from retrospective perspectives the states of numerous cultural assets, most of which remain today only as memories within urban structures.

Starting from Spring 2014, VEKAM organizes an international symposium once a year on Cultural Encounters in Anatolia in the Medieval Period. After the Georgian Empire and the Ilkhanids this year's theme is on "Italians in Anatolia during 12th and 15th Centuries" (Istanbul excluded). The symposium held on May 13th, 2016 at the premises of VEKAM in Ankara/ Turkey. "The Mongol victory over the Seljuks in 1243, the Mongol sack of Baghdad in 1258, which led to the commercial rise of Tabriz, and the rapprochement between Cilician Armenia and the Mongols resulted in a shift of the trade route across Anatolia. Ayas in Cilician Armenia replaced Antalya as its Mediterranean outlet. Mongol rule also furthered trade between Tabriz and the Black Sea port of Trebizond. It is along these itineraries that Italian merchants travelled to and from Mongol territories, as illustrated by the journeys of the father and uncle of Marco Polo and of Marco himself in the second half of the 13th Century. At Ayas on the shore of Cilicia Venice received trading privileges in 1261, well after Genoa's first treaty with the Armenian kingdom (1201). The Venetian element in Ayas' foreign merchant community grew with the general increase in the intensity of trade and with the inception of the state galley run or incanto. But international trading activity at Ayas, and the use of the tracks to Sivas, seems to have been cut short by the Mamluks' acquisition of the port in 1337...".
