Nato in Moravia nel 1881 in una famiglia ebrea, combatté con onore nella Grande guerra e seppe comunicare ai propri allievi una straordinaria passione per i classici e la filosofia umanistica. Ateo e contrario al sionismo, sposò Amelie Pollack, brillante studentessa di matematica e fisica con la quale sviluppò una relazione profonda, sincera e anticonvenzionale. Morì nel 1943 in un campo di concentramento, dopo avere assistito incredulo e impotente all'affermarsi della cieca follia nazista. Il nipote Peter Singer ne ricostruisce le vicende.
