Born in Kuldiga (Latvia) , Weinreich made his debut as a Yiddish writer at the age of 13, and became a contributor to various Yiddish, Russian, German, and later English publications. After studying at the universities of St. Petersburg and Berlin, he completed a doctoral thesis on the history of Yiddish philology at the University of Marburg. Early in his career Weinreich became a prominent educator in various capacities, ranging from the teaching of Yiddish literature at the Vilna Yiddish Teachers Seminary to serving as leader of a Yiddish scouting movement, Di Bin. He was instrumental in giving Yiddish linguistics a solid, scholarly footing. Co-founder with Nokhem Shtif, Elias Tcherikover, and Zalmen Rejzen of the YIVO Institute, and YIVOs guiding spirit, he was largely responsible for its achieving a worldwide reputation. As director of YIVOs Research Training Division and organizer of its graduate school, Weinreich successfully educated young Yiddish scholars, among them, his son, Uriel Weinreich. At the World Congress of Linguistics in Copenhagen, he lectured on Yiddish as an Object of General Linguistics, and in 1940, he immigrated with his son Uriel to the U. S. , where he became the countrys first university professor of Yiddish, teaching Yiddish language, literature, and folklore at the College of the City of New York and Columbia University, while serving as the scholarly director of YIVO. Weinreichs wide array of books and studies include his magnum opus, Geshikhte fun der Yidisher Shprakh, the culmination of a half century of research on Yiddish sociolinguistics, tracing the thousand-year development of Ashkenazi culture and the Yiddish language as integral to the Jewish way of life. He studied the development of Yiddish from its origins in Germany, through Eastern Europe and into the second diaspora, creating the basic concepts and theoretical tools of the linguistic study of Jewish languages. Later on a farm was bought at Thaxted in Essex which became not only a model Hachsharah centre but very quickly a successful agricultural venture which at one time won first prize for having the best milk yielding cow in Essex! Single sided flyer of the German-American Bund (Friends ofthe New Germany), with program for four gatherings in June; letterhead includescenterpiece Swastika and address for the German-American Bund, with facsimilesignature of J. [James] Wheeler-Hill, Ortsgruppen-Leiter New York, withSieg-Heil! in bold letters at bottom of announcement. Includes programlistings for different days in June, mostly speeches and gatherings at theYorkville Casino, and elsewhere in New York City. James Wheeler Hill was atthis time local branch leader, and later national secretary, of theGerman-American Bund. As both German-American Bund and Friends of the NewGermany simultaneously appear on this sheet, though undated as per the year,this flyer must be dated either 1935 or 1936, when the Friends of the NewGermany was being dissolved into the newly formed German-American Bund. The2012 Encyclopedia Brittanica describes the group as follows: TheGerman-American Bund, also called (193335) Friends Of The New Germany,American pro-Nazi, quasi-military organization that was most active in theyears immediately preceding the United States entry into World War II. TheBunds members were mostly American citizens of German ancestry. Theorganization received covert guidance and financial support from the Germangovernment. Military drill and related activities were provided for adults andyouths at Bund-maintained camps: Camp Siegfried, Yaphank, N.Y.; Camp Nordland,Andover, N.J.; Deutschhorst Country Club, Sellersville, Pa.; and elsewhere.Anti-Semitic and pro-Nazi elements in the United States generally supported theBund. The Bund included self-designated storm troopers, who affected theuniforms of the German Nazi SA. Mass rallies were held at such sites as MadisonSquare Garden in New York City. In 1939 the Bunds total membership was about20,000. In 1939 the Bunds national leader, Fritz Julius Kuhn, was prosecutedfor grand larceny (misappropriating Bund money) and forgery; in 1940 itsnational secretary, James Wheeler-Hill, was convicted of perjury. Als Häftling im Konzentrationslager Mauthausen arbeitete Wiesenthal auf dem Todesblock - unbemerkt von den Nazi-Schergen - an Skizzen und Zeichnungen, die einem Ziel dienen sollten: die Weltöffentlichkeit nach dem Ende der Naziherrschaft und der Befreiung der Konzentrationslager darüber zu informieren, was sich hinter deren Mauern und dem Stacheldraht zugetragen hat. Wiesenthal brauchte für seine Arbeiten nicht viel mehr als einen Bleistiftstummel und etwas Papier. Bildfragmente aus Nazi-Magazinen, wie sie in Papierkörben zu finden waren, baute er nach dem Krieg als optische Zitate in seine Collagen ein, und auch die Texte zu den Bildern entstanden erst im Zuge der Vorbereitungen zur Veröffentlichung des vorliegenden Buches. Infolge der kleinen Auflage war das Werk bald vergriffen und geriet in Vergessenheit, außerdem waren in der Zeit des beginnenden Kalten Krieges Bücher über Nazi-Greuel nicht weiter gefragt...
