Born in Yorkshire in 1924, Sue Ryder served with the Special Operations Executive (SOE) during the Second World War. Established by Winston Churchill in 1940, the SOE promoted and coordinated resistance activity in German occupied Europe. Her life's mission became clear after World War II. During the post-war reconstruction in Europe, she worked as a volunteer amongst displaced and stateless refugees. During this time she opened her first home, St Christopher's in Germany. It was designed as a haven for refugees, many of whom were survivors of concentration camps. On her return to England, she established the Sue Ryder Foundation with the aim to provide care where it is needed most. Sue Ryder was married for many years to war hero and fellow charity founder the late Leonard Cheshire VC, who died in 1992. Lady Ryder was made a life peer in 1978 and was a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1975. She also received the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1957. The jacket is price clipped with two closed tears reinforced with clear tape on the blank side. The spine of the jacket is bright with none of the usual fading. NO owner's name or bookplate. NOT a remainder. The year of publication "1952" is printed on both the title and copyright pages. This copy does NOT have the "First Edition" statement on its copyright page. The rear panel of the Dust Jacket has the code "125" at the lower left bottom corner. Based on examination of several 1952 copies we believe the code "125" appears only on later printing jackets. None-the-less this is an attractive and desirable copy from one of the earliest printings in English. Based on extensive research we have concluded that the earliest copies of the 1952 U.S. printings of this book were issued with brown-tinted photographic endpapers as here; with green-tinted photographic endpapers coming later; and plain white endpapers later still. Introduction by Eleanor Roosevelt. Translated from the Dutch by B. M. Mooyaart-Doubleday. Illustrated with 3 diagrams floor plans of the annex and brown-tinted endpaper photos. Anne Frank's diary encompasses the period from June 1942 to July 1944 during which time the Frank family was hidden by friends in a Dutch warehouse. This book was first published in 1947 in Dutch as HET ACHTERHUIS. If you care about condition be sure to see a photo of the jacket's spine when considering other copies. The jacket has a few small edge chips and a crease to the corner of its rear turn-in flap.
