Drawing on the Fortunoff Video Archives for Holocaust Testimonies at Yale University, Lawrence L. Langer shows how oral Holocaust testimonies complement historical studies by enabling us to confront the human dimensions of the catastrophe. Quoting extensively from these interviews, Langer develops a technique for interpreting them as we might a written text. He contrasts written and oral narratives, noting that while survivor memoirs by authors such as Primo Levi and Charlotte Delbo transform reality through style, imagery, chronology, or a coherent moral vision, oral testimonies resist these organizing impulses and allow instead a kind of unshielded truth to emerge, just as powerful in its impact as the visions taking shape in written memoirs. He argues that it is necessary to deromanticize the survival experience and that to burden it with accolades about the “indomitable human spirit” is to slight its painful complexity and ambivalence. ‎An den Grenzen der Menschlichkeit. Max Schohl war ein angesehener Bürger des Städtchens Flörsheim am Main. Er war im Ersten Weltkrieg mehrfach ausgezeichnet worden, seine Chemiefabrik leitete er mit großem Erfolg, ein beliebter und wohltätiger Arbeitgeber, der sich in erster Linie als deutscher Patriot empfand, erst in zweiter Linie als Jude. Und so fühlte er sich auch nicht bedroht, als die Nazis an die Macht kamen. Erst die Brutalitäten der Kristallnacht zeigten ihm unmissverständlich, dass er die Rettung für sich und seine Familie einzig in der Emigration suchen konnte. Ein tragischer Leidensweg begann.Amerika war nie das Land seiner Träume, doch nach dem Pogrom im November 1938 scheint es die beste Wahl für den Chemiker Max Schohl, seine arische Ehefrau und die beiden Töchter. Ein amerikanischer Cousin stellt die finanziellen Mittel bereit, überwindet bürokratische Hürden und kann Schohl sogar als Lehrer an ein College vermitteln; alle Voraussetzungen sind damit erfüllt. Dennoch lehnt das Generalkonsulat in Stuttgart den Antrag auf Einwanderung ab. Was die verzweifelte Familie Schohl nicht wissen kann: Die USA betreiben eine extrem restriktive Einwanderungspolitik, erfüllen nicht einmal die vereinbarten niedrigen Quoten, das Schicksal europäischer Juden lässt sie kalt. Als sich auch alle weiteren Pläne zerschlagen - die Schohls bemühen sich um eine Auswanderung nach England, nach Chile und nach Brasilien - bleibt nur noch die Flucht nach Jugoslawien. Die Familie kann Atem schöpfen, lebt sich ein; doch 1941 besetzen deutsche Truppen das Land. Max Schohl stirbt 1943 in Auschwitz. Liesel Schohl und ihre Töchter Hela und Käthe werden 1944 in ein Arbeitslager bei Wiesbaden deportiert. Als Käthe sich kurz nach Kriegsende entschließt, nach Amerika auszuwandern, erhält sie umstandslos ein Visum, eine bittere Ironie der Geschichte.
