Questa è l'assurda vicenda della Cap Arcona, nave di bandiera della compagnia di navigazione Hamburg Süd, - seconda per dimensioni solo al celebre Titanic - che, prima di essere affondata dai missili incendiari della Royal Air Force, ebbe molte vite. Nata come piroscafo di lusso per le tratte sudamericane, viene degradata a caserma galleggiante dopo lo scoppio della Seconda guerra mondiale. Sarà Joseph Goebbels a restituirle lustro. Il ministro della propaganda di Hitler la vuole ardentemente come set per un kolossal sulla tragedia del Titanic, al fine di dimostrare l'incompetenza e la vigliaccheria degli ufficiali inglesi. Ci sono tutte le premesse per realizzare una pellicola memorabile, ma non sarà così. In seguito al clamoroso insuccesso del film, la Cap Arcona viene nuovamente requisita dall'esercito tedesco e impiegata per il trasporto, attraverso il mar Baltico, di soldati e civili in fuga dall'Armata Rossa; tra questi, migliaia di prigionieri provenienti dai campi di concentramento. Negli ultimi giorni del conflitto le SS, risolute a cancellare ogni traccia degli orribili crimini commessi, decidono di portare al largo il vecchio transatlantico e autoaffondarlo con tutto il suo carico umano. Sarà tuttavia la RAF a bombardare la Cap Arcona il 3 maggio 1945. Benché il governo inglese abbia reso inaccessibili molti documenti riguardanti la vicenda, Robert P. Watson è riuscito a ricomporne la memoria, ricorrendo a un'ingente mole di fonti primarie e secondarie e grazie anche alle testimonianze dei pochi superstiti. Dalla tragicommedia al dramma più apocalittico, nelle pagine di questa avvincente storia la Cap Arcona diventa il muto testimone dei grotteschi fasti del Terzo Reich al suo apogeo come pure della sua catastrofica dissoluzione.

Atlantide ha attraversato come un filo rosso la storia del radicalismo di destra: dagli ariosofi, che giocarono un ruolo importante nella fase d'incubazione del nazionalsocialismo, passando per i numerosi autori nazionalisti degli anni '20, la Società Teosofica di Helena Blavatsky e illustri esponenti del Partito nazista come Wirth e Rosenberg, per arrivare alla nuova destra europea e ai neonazisti tedeschi. Una continuità che esige una riflessione approfondita in grado di decifrare i meccanismi che hanno attivato questa fascinazione. L'autore prende in considerazione le analisi di illustri studiosi del mito di Atlantide: fra le altre, quella di Julius Evola, secondo cui l'«uomo dominatore», appartenente alla razza nordica, avrebbe affrontato le «assai meno valorose razze del Sud»; e quella di Georges Sorel, che vedeva nel mito una successione di immagini in grado di suscitare stati d'animo ed emozioni di portata sociale. Rifacendosi agli studi sul mito di Roland Barthes, dietro all'immagine dell'isola paradisiaca Wegener giunge però a scorgere una sostanziale pulsione di morte. Una pulsione da cui non sono esenti le teorie nazionalsocialiste: alla ricerca delle origini del popolo ariano, Hitler e Himmler formularono la tesi secondo la quale la pura razza degli abitanti di Atlantide - da loro collocata nel Nord del mondo - tramontò essendosi mescolata con specie inferiori. I pochi ariani sopravvissuti, migrati sul continente, sarebbero i progenitori della superiore razza tedesca destinata a dominare la terra. Seguaci di una visione apocalittica del mondo, i nazisti trovarono nell'immagine-modello di Atlantide il folle ideale di perfezione e superiorità che li risucchiò, inconsapevolmente, in un vortice sempre più rapido di autodistruzione.

La ricerca nazista sugli esseri umani non era priva di etica; era l'etica a essere stata plasmata dall'ideologia nazista: il dovere del medico non era più verso il singolo paziente, ma verso la nazione e la razza. La sperimentazione medica coercitiva nazista viene descritta come fenomeno a sé stante, con una sua evoluzione, che non si esaurisce all'interno dei campi di concentramento. Born in Kuldiga (Latvia) , Weinreich made his debut as a Yiddish writer at the age of 13, and became a contributor to various Yiddish, Russian, German, and later English publications. After studying at the universities of St. Petersburg and Berlin, he completed a doctoral thesis on the history of Yiddish philology at the University of Marburg. Early in his career Weinreich became a prominent educator in various capacities, ranging from the teaching of Yiddish literature at the Vilna Yiddish Teachers Seminary to serving as leader of a Yiddish scouting movement, Di Bin. He was instrumental in giving Yiddish linguistics a solid, scholarly footing. Co-founder with Nokhem Shtif, Elias Tcherikover, and Zalmen Rejzen of the YIVO Institute, and YIVOs guiding spirit, he was largely responsible for its achieving a worldwide reputation. As director of YIVOs Research Training Division and organizer of its graduate school, Weinreich successfully educated young Yiddish scholars, among them, his son, Uriel Weinreich. At the World Congress of Linguistics in Copenhagen, he lectured on Yiddish as an Object of General Linguistics, and in 1940, he immigrated with his son Uriel to the U. S. , where he became the countrys first university professor of Yiddish, teaching Yiddish language, literature, and folklore at the College of the City of New York and Columbia University, while serving as the scholarly director of YIVO. Weinreichs wide array of books and studies include his magnum opus, Geshikhte fun der Yidisher Shprakh, the culmination of a half century of research on Yiddish sociolinguistics, tracing the thousand-year development of Ashkenazi culture and the Yiddish language as integral to the Jewish way of life. He studied the development of Yiddish from its origins in Germany, through Eastern Europe and into the second diaspora, creating the basic concepts and theoretical tools of the linguistic study of Jewish languages. Prominent among his other works are Hitlers Profesorn- probably the best documented indictment of German scholarship during the Nazi regime; Shturemvint, sketches on 17th-century Jewish history; Bilder fun der Yidisher Literatur-Geshikhte; Der Veg tsu Undzer Yugnt, a socio-psychological study of Jewish youth in Eastern Europe; and Di Shvartse Pintelekh, a history of alphabets. Co-founder with Nokhem Shtif, Elias Tcherikover, and Zalmen Rejzen of the YIVO Institute, and YIVOs guiding spirit, he was largely responsible for its achieving a worldwide reputation. As director of YIVOs Research Training Division and organizer of its graduate school, Weinreich successfully educated young Yiddish scholars, among them, his son, Uriel Weinreich. At the World Congress of Linguistics in Copenhagen, he lectured on Yiddish as an Object of General Linguistics, and in 1940, he immigrated with his son Uriel to the U. S. , where he became the countrys first university professor of Yiddish, teaching Yiddish language, literature, and folklore at the College of the City of New York and Columbia University, while serving as the scholarly director of YIVO. Weinreichs wide array of books and studies include his magnum opus, Geshikhte fun der Yidisher Shprakh, the culmination of a half century of research on Yiddish sociolinguistics, tracing the thousand-year development of Ashkenazi culture and the Yiddish language as integral to the Jewish way of life. He studied the development of Yiddish from its origins in Germany, through Eastern Europe and into the second diaspora, creating the basic concepts and theoretical tools of the linguistic study of Jewish languages. Prominent among his other works are Hitlers Profesorn- probably the best documented indictment of German scholarship during the Nazi regime; Shturemvint, sketches on 17th-century Jewish history; Bilder fun der Yidisher Literatur-Geshikhte; Der Veg tsu Undzer Yugnt, a socio-psychological study of Jewish youth in Eastern Europe; and Di Shvartse Pintelekh, a history of alphabets. Weinreich translated Homer, Freud, and Ernst Toller into Yiddish and edited the periodicals Yidishe Filologye, Filologishe Shriftn, Yivo-Bleter, and the critical edition of S. Ettingers works, N. Stutchkoffs Oytser fun der Yidisher Shprakh, Y. L. Cahans Shtudyes vegn Yidisher Folkshafung, and Yidishe Folkslider mit Melodyes (Schaechter and Baumgarten in EJ, 2007) . "Leon Weliczker Wells was born in Lvov, Poland, on March 10, 1925. Wells was a prisoner in the Janowska concentration camp outside Lvov during World War II. He escaped from the camp in an uprising in 1943 and was hidden in the basement of the Kalwinski family on the outskirts of Lvov. Wells kept a written record of his experiences as a member of the "Death Brigade," and these memoirs were published in Poland after the war and reissued in the United States as The Janowska Road. In 1946 Wells left Poland for the American Zone in Germany, and while in Munich he helped organize the Jewish Historical Commission there. This group gathered documents on the Holocaust which became part of the original collection of the Yad Vashem archive in Israel. Wells gave testimony at both the Nuremberg trials and the Eichmann trial....Wells published Who Speaks for the Vanquished? in 1987. In this work Wells investigated the "non-response" of American Jewish leaders of theplight of Jews in Nazi Europe. He contended that Zionist organizations in America failed to respond in a significant way to save the Jews of Europe because they were focusing their time, influence, and money on preparations for a Jewish state in Palestine" (Yale 2002).Repair to spine.
