Some beautiful Christmas cards as well as a whole section of ephemera notes menus etc. relating to the club. All sorts of interesting things. There is a miniature book "the Trail to Christmas" by Wilber D. Nesbit and a Christmas card signed by Bert & Alta Hubbard. Bert is the son of Elbert Hubbard Roycrofters. Also a pamplet signed by the then-governor of Pennsylvania Martin G. Brumbaugh giving his address on Pennsylvania Day at the Panama Pacific Exposition in 1915. Printed text recto and verso in English and German in columns throughout large monochrome woodcut illustration by Cecil Salkeld to each issue. The rare short-lived and suppressed Irish literary periodical 'TO-MORROW' with the first appearance of Yeats' 'Leda and the Swan'.Edited by Cecil Salkeld and Henry Stuart 'TO-MORROW' despite its optimistic and future-looking title and the solicitation for content and subscription announcements saw only two issues in 1924 for August and September. The editors had however secured contributions a poem 'TO-MORROW' saw the first publication of 'Leda and the Swan' and an anonymous editorial from Nobel Laureate W. B. Yeats Liam O'Flaherty and Lennox Robinson as well as many others see below and aimed to publish a forum for new Irish poetry and prose that was inclusive and expansive. Unfortunately 'TO-MORROW' was also controversial and was suppressed despite the support of Yeats and others; not only did 'TO-MORROW' fail to invigorate Irish art and bring about a free Irish Renaissance it helped usher in a climate of further repression supression and censorship.The first issue included prose works such as O'Flaherty's 'A Red Petticoat' Robinson's 'The Madonna of Slieve Dun' Salkeld's 'The Principles of Painting' Margaret Barrington's 'Colour' and L. K. Emery's manifesto-like 'A Primitive'. Yeats' 'Leda and the Swan' led the poetry section that also included work by Charlotte Arthur F. R. Higgins Joseph Campbell and R. N. D. Wilson. A sonnet in German by O. F. Fleck was also published.The second issue was in similar format a mixture of prose and poetry opening with Arthur Symons' appreciation of Honoré Daumier featuring the conclusion of Salkeld's 'The Principles of Painting' as well as 'The Poplar Road' by Iseult Stuart H. Stuart's 'In the Hour Before Dawn' 'The Garden' by Sachka and 'The Tendencies of the Younger Irish Poetry' by L. K. Emery. Poetry included further contributions from Charlotte Arthur R. N. D. Wilson and F. R. Higgins as well as a poem by Blanaid Salkeld. O. F. FLeck contributed another poem 'An P'. Each issue included a large woodcut by Cecil Salkeld.'In August 1924 a small literary magazine To-Morrow went on sale in Dublin. As its title implies the magazine's editors Francis Stuart and Cecil Salkeld were buoyed with optimism. They hoped for a new cultural movement in the arts that would parallel its development and in turn influence the newly founded Irish Free State.' Bernard McKenna.'My dream is a wild paper of the young which will make enemies everywhere and suffer suppression I hope a number of times with the logical assertion with all fitting deductions of the immortality of the soul.' Yeats writing to Olivia Shakespeare.'TO-MORROW' is necessarily fragile and the present copy has been folded in half with ensuing wear. In 1805 Pike then an army lieutenant led a 20-man exploring party to the headwaters of the Mississippi River with instructions to discover the river s source negotiate peace treaties with Indian tribes and assert the legal claim of the United States to the area. <br /><br />Pike traveled 2000 miles by boat and on foot from St. Louis Missouri to Leech and Sandy lakes in northern Minnesota. He erroneously identified Leech Lake as the river s source. <br /><br />In July 1806 Pike was dispatched to the Southwest to explore the Arkansas and Red rivers and to obtain information about the adjacent Spanish territory. Pike established an outpost near the site of present-day Pueblo Colorado and then led his party northwest where they encountered the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. After trying unsuccessfully to scale the mountain peak later named for Pike the party proceeded southward to northern New Mexico where they were apprehended by Spanish officials on the charge of illegal entry into New Mexico. They were escorted across Texas to the Spanish American border at Natchitoches Louisiana where on July 1 1807 they were released.</p><p>Pike s report on Santa Fe with information noting particularly the military weakness of the capital and the lucrativeness of the overland trade with Mexico stimulated the expansionist movement into Texas.<br /><br /><strong> Condition:</strong></p><p>Rebound. Howes: P372 Limited to 1150 copies of which this is number 734.</p><p>Zebulon Montgomery Pike Jr. January 5 1779 - April 27 1813 was an American soldier and explorer for whom Pikes Peak in Colorado is named. His Pike expedition mapped much of the southern portion of the Louisiana Purchase. Pike was born in Lamberton New Jersey now a part of Trenton. His father also named Zebulon Pike was an officer in the Continental Army under General George Washington and served in the United States Army after the end of the Revolutionary War.</p><p>The younger Pike grew to adulthood in a series of Midwestern outposts-the frontier of the United States at the time-in Ohio and Illinois. He joined his father's regiment as a cadet in 1794 earned a commission as ensign in 1799 and a first lieutenancy later that year. Pike married Clarissa Harlow Brown in 1801 and continued his military career in logistics and payroll at a series of frontier posts.</p><p>His career was taken up by General James Wilkinson who had been appointed Governor of the Upper Louisiana Territory. In 1805 Wilkinson ordered Zebulon Pike to find the source of the Mississippi River. Nearly immediately upon his return Pike was ordered out once again to lead an exploratory expedition to find the headwaters of the Arkansas River and Red River. Near St. Louis on July 15 1806 Pike led what is now known as "the Pike expedition" from Fort Bellefontaine to explore the southwest. Pike never successfully reached the summit of the famous peak that bears his name Pikes Peak. He attempted it in November 1806 made it as far as Mt. Rosa to the southeast of Pikes Peak and gave up the ascent in waist-deep snow after having gone almost two days without food. This journey for which he is most remembered ended with his capture on February 26 1807 by Spanish authorities in northern New Mexico now part of Colorado. Pike and his men were taken to Santa Fe then to Chihuahua where he appeared before the Commandant General Salcedo. Salcedo housed Pike with Juan Pedro Walker a cartographer who also acted as an interpreter and as a transcriber/translator for Pike's confiscated documents. It was while with Walker that Pike had access to various maps of the southwest and learned of Mexican discontent with Spanish rule. Pike and his men were released under protest to the United States at the Louisiana border on July 1 1807.</p><p><strong>Condition:</strong> Extremities rubbed title to volume one detached unread with the pages needing to be separated else very good.
