ROOSEVELT Theodore RIIS Jacob
THEODORE ROOSEVELT THE CITIZEN
New York: The Outlook Company 1904. First Edition. Hardcover. Hinges cracked and neatly repaired. Still Near Fine. Second Printing in publisher's original decorated cloth. Illustrated with plates. This copy virtually unique as it is INSCRIBED and SIGNED by both the author and the subject as President. Riis's inscription is dated 5 August 1908. Roosevelt writes: "with the best wishes of/Theodore Roosevelt/The White House/Jan. 18th 1909." The addition of "The White House" by Roosevelt is notable as prior to his administration the residence was known as the "President's Palace" the "President's House" and the "Executive Mansion." It was Roosevelt who officially named it "The White House" in 1901. Of the many books signed by Roosevelt we have both handled and seen we have never before encountered one in which he has noted his official residence along with his signature.

Jacob Riis among the most dedicated advocates for America's oppressed and downtrodden arrived in New York from his native Denmark at the age of 21 in 1870. A pioneer in photojournalism Riis photographed and wrote about the slums and tenements of a New York in the dawn of a new century. Riis came to Roosevelt's attention through his 1890 book HOW THE OTHER HALF LIVES. As Commissioner of the New York City Police Department Roosevelt accompanied Riis on his evening travels through the slums and witnessed firsthand the inhumane conditions endured by many of New York's inhabitants. In his 1901 book MAKING OF AN AMERICAN Riis wrote of Roosevelt: "It could not have been long after I wrote HOW THE OTHER HALF LIVES that he came to the Evening Sun office one day looklng for me. I was out and he left his card merely writing on the back of it that he had read my book and had 'come to help'. That was all and it tells the whole story of the man. I loved him from the day I first saw him; nor ever in all the years that have passed has he failed of the promise made then. No one ever helped as he did. For two years we were brothers on Mulberry Street." Roosevelt in turn wrote of Riis after his death: "It is difficult for me to write of Jacob Riis only from the public standpoint. He was one of my truest and closest friends. I have ever prized the fact that once in speaking of me he said 'since I met him he has been my brother.' I have not only admired and respected him beyond measure but I have loved him dearlyand I mourn him as if he were one of my own family." The Outlook Company hardcover

Roosevelt Elliott
Third Photographic Group: To Mother from Elliott; with Elliott Roosevelt's Special Passport
Alger / algiers Algeria: Elliott Roosevelt / Heliogravure Algerienne 1943. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good. Sepia Photographs. Folio - between 12" - 15" Tall. This work appears to be unique and is in unrecorded in Worldcat. It is a presentation copy for Eleanor Roosevelt printed while of active service by her son Elliott Roosevelt with a contribution by FDR. It is accompanied by Elliott Roosevelt's own special diplomatic passport valid from March 6 1942 to September 6 1942 which included most of the period covered by this work. These two items offer unique documentation of both the service and the privilege of President Roosevelt's son. Who else could create a book apparently in an edition of a single copy documenting his unit's activity while on active service for his mother First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt with a photo and text added by his father FDR. The title page reads top to bottom: "To Mother from Elliott // Third Photographic Group // Commanding Officer Lt. Col. Elliott Rooosevelt." The next page features a heliogravure photograph of President Franklin D. Roosevelt with printed dedication in FDR's hand thanking the men of the Third Photographic Group. The work goes on to follow the unit from England to North Africa featuring scences of the Casbah the flight line to daily duties in 18 more leaves printed recto only. 20 leaves printed recto only with brief captioning text and approximately 100 photographs printed in heliogravure in sepia. Brown leatherette binding with an internal comb binding. The binding is in very good condition and the combs are remarkably intact. The text is browned and the title page has traces of dampstain with some marginal chipping and wear. There is plain brown paper jacket which may or may not be original. The work was printed by Heliogravure Algerienne in Algiers Algeria in 1943 for Lt. Col. Rooosevelt. Elliott Roosevelt son of President Franklin D. Roosevelt was an innovator in the art of wartime aerial reconnaissance who served with both distinction and controversy rising to the rank of Brigadier General. Elliott Roosevelt's wartime special passport was valid only for "The continent of Africa including the Union of South Africa and Egypt and the British Isles - Officiall Business. Necessary Countries en route" and was signed and thumb-printed by the Chief of the Passport Division himself. It bears a number of visas from Britain as well the embassies of Trinidad South Africa Brasil Egypt and Portugal some likely as misdirections during the attempt to keep Operation Torch secret. Elliott Roosevelt / Heliogravure Algerienne unknown

N.p.: Printed on board the U.S.S. Houston 1938. Illustrated from photographs by R.B. Thompson. 75 pp. 1 vols. 4to. Original printed wrappers printed in gold. Fine copy in custom blue cloth clamshell box. Illustrated from photographs by R.B. Thompson. 75 pp. 1 vols. 4to. FDR's visit to the Galapagos with Sailfishing at Cocos Island. The very scarce printed memorial printed on board the ship of FDR's Third Presidential Cruise on the USS Houston from the July 14 to August 9 1938 on his way to the Galapagos Islands FDR was the first U.S. President to visit them. In the introduction to the booklet one of the editors records that "Shortly after the cruise commenced certain members of the Houston personnel conceived the idea of publishing a book which would relate graphically all of the interesting incidents happening on board our ship . We trust that the following pages will keep alive fond memories of a happy cruise with as grand a shipmate it has ever been our privilege to meet." There are numerous photos of Roosevelt with the crew and the Presidential party shots of the Galapagos and its strange fauna and a good deal of wit and raillery in the text and photos directed toward the "pollywogs" on the part of the "shellbacks" in anticipation of the approaching traditional ceremony of "crossing the line." The ship called at Cocos Island and the log records successful sport fishing for sailfish in those waters. The U.S.S. Houston was sunk during the war. A wonderfully light-hearted and very scarce piece for the FDR collector at a time when the clouds of a world war were gathering on the horizon.
