‎1957. ROOSEVELT Eleanor Wife of Theodore Roosevelt Jr. TYPED LETTER SIGNED. Dated May 17 1957 on letterhead Old Orchard NY. To Adelaide wife of John Marquand. An affectionate and intimate letter in which Eleanor Roosevelt reacts to the news of the Marquands' separation: "I am so very sorry to hear that you and John are separated at the moment and I do hope most fervently that it will not be permanent. Many times I have seen patience win against what had appeared to be great odds." But not in this case - the Marquands were divorced soon afterwards. The letter goes on "It is so good of you to suggest giving some Rooseveltiana to Roosevelt House. Personally I would love to see you give it to Sagamore Hill instead." Details follow about the house at Sagamore Hill and about the "speech with the bullet hole through it" of which Mrs. Marquand owned a page. Mrs. Roosevelt concludes: "Indeed I remember our good times here with you and John. I remember one day just as you were leaving when you said: 'I do enjoy a day with our subversive friends!' Ickes Secretary of the Interior and Harry Hopkins advisor and New Deal architect. Housed in dark blue leather custom clamshell case gilt title on spine gilt title front cover. Horowitz 100 Halter. Log of the presidential cruise to the Bahamas in April 1941. The USS Potomac would serve as a decoy to allow President Roosevelt to escape to Newfoundland to meet with Winston Churchill during World War II. Fine copy in custom blue cloth clamshell box. Illustrated from photographs by R.B. Thompson. 75 pp. 1 vols. 4to. FDR's visit to the Galapagos with Sailfishing at Cocos Island. The very scarce printed memorial printed on board the ship of FDR's Third Presidential Cruise on the USS Houston from the July 14 to August 9 1938 on his way to the Galapagos Islands FDR was the first U.S. President to visit them. In the introduction to the booklet one of the editors records that "Shortly after the cruise commenced certain members of the HOUSTON personnel conceived the idea of publishing a book which would relate graphically all of the interesting incidents happening on board our ship. We trust that the following pages will keep alive fond memories of a happy cruise with as grand a shipmate it has ever been our privilege to meet." There are numerous photos of Roosevelt with the crew and the Presidential party shots of the Galapagos and its strange fauna and a good deal of wit and raillery in the text and photos directed toward the "pollywogs" on the part of the "shellbacks" in anticipation of the approaching traditional ceremony of "crossing the line." The ship called at Cocos Island and the log records successful sport fishing for sailfish in those waters. The U.S.S. Houston was sunk during the war. A wonderfully light-hearted and very scarce piece for the FDR collector at a time when the clouds of a world war were gathering on the horizon. The Senate committee hearings that Pecora led probed the causes of the Wall Street Crash of 1929 that launched a major reform of the American financial system. After Pecora closed his investigations on July 2 1934 President Roosevelt appointed Ferdinand Pecora a Commissioner of the newly formed U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission SEC. The first part of the collection was sold at auction in 1951 by Hammer Galleries of New York. At the estate sale for Eleanor Roosevelt in 1964 additional miniature books were sold at auction. ‎Lithographic broadside "D-Day Prayer.‎

‎Washington D.C Christmas 1944. Limited edition of this rare broadside of the "D-Day Prayer" one of only 50 printed copies issued by President Franklin D. Roosevelt for his close friends handsomely printed in gothic type with red blue and gold ink textual embellishments. The broadside measures 14 inches by 21 inches printed in black gothic type capital letters and portions of the heading in red and blue ink. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 20.5 inches by 28 inches. A rare and desirable piece of history. On June 6th 1944 while American and Allied troops stormed the beaches at Normandy Roosevelt released the text of a prayer in the afternoon which he then delivered by radio to the nation at 10:00 p.m. Eastern time. It is estimated according to Andrew Malcolm that as many as 100 million people listened to it. "The prayer does not invoke one faith but the appeal to God is bold and unapologetic. The D-Day Prayer was an extraordinary event in U.S. religious history" Malcolm. The D-Day Prayer reads in full: "Last night when I spoke with you about the fall of Rome I knew at that moment that troops of the United States and our Allies were crossing the Channel in another and greater operation. It has come to pass with success thus far. And so in this poignant hour I ask you to join with me in prayer: Almighty God: Our sons pride of our nation this day have set upon a mighty endeavor a struggle to preserve our Republic our religion and our civilization and to set free a suffering humanity. Lead them straight and true; give strength to their arms stoutness to their hearts steadfastness in their faith. They will need Thy blessings. Their road will be long and hard. For the enemy is strong. He may hurl back our forces. Success may not come with rushing speed but we shall return again and again; and we know that by Thy grace and by the righteousness of our cause our sons will triumph. They will be sore tried by night and by day without rest--until the victory is won. The darkness will be rent by noise and flame. Men's souls will be shaken with the violences of war. For these men are lately drawn from the ways of peace. They fight not for the lust of conquest. They fight to end conquest. They fight to liberate. They fight to let justice arise and tolerance and goodwill among all Thy people. They yearn but for an end of battle for their return to the haven of home. Some will never return. Embrace these Father and receive them Thy heroic servants into Thy kingdom. And for us at home--fathers mothers children wives sisters and brothers of brave men overseas whose thoughts and prayers are ever with them--help us Almighty God to rededicate ourselves in renewed faith in Thee in their hour of great sacrifice. Many people have urged that I call the nation into a single day of special prayer. But because the road is long and the desire is great I ask that our people devote themselves in a continuance of prayer. As we rise to each new day and again when each day is spent let words of prayer be on our lips invoking Thy help to our efforts. Give us strength too--strength in our daily tasks to redouble the contributions we make in the physical and the material support of our armed forces. And let our hearts be stout to wait out the long travail to bear sorrows that may come to impart our courage unto our sons wheresoever they may be. And O Lord give us faith. Give us faith in Thee; faith in our sons; faith in each other; faith in our united crusade. Let not the keenness of our spirit ever be dulled. Let not the impacts of temporary events of temporal matters of but fleeting moment--let not these deter us in our unconquerable purpose. This copy belonged to the descendants of John Boettiger who was married to Roosevelt's daughter Anna in 1944 they later divorced. According to family lore Boettiger and Anna assisted in the writing of the speech. According to Curtis Roosevelt Anna's son and John's stepson in his memoir Too Close to the Sun: Growing Up in the Shadow of My Grandparents: Franklin and Eleanor in the spring of 1944 "just before the invasion of Normandy Papa F.D.R. had asked Mummy and Popsie to help him write his D-Day message which he intended to broadcast to Americans on the day that tide-turning operation was launched. Fine copy in custom blue cloth clamshell box. Illustrated from photographs by R.B. Thompson. 75 pp. 1 vols. 4to. FDR's visit to the Galapagos with Sailfishing at Cocos Island. The very scarce printed memorial printed on board the ship of FDR's Third Presidential Cruise on the USS Houston from the July 14 to August 9 1938 on his way to the Galapagos Islands FDR was the first U.S. President to visit them. In the introduction to the booklet one of the editors records that "Shortly after the cruise commenced certain members of the Houston personnel conceived the idea of publishing a book which would relate graphically all of the interesting incidents happening on board our ship . We trust that the following pages will keep alive fond memories of a happy cruise with as grand a shipmate it has ever been our privilege to meet." There are numerous photos of Roosevelt with the crew and the Presidential party shots of the Galapagos and its strange fauna and a good deal of wit and raillery in the text and photos directed toward the "pollywogs" on the part of the "shellbacks" in anticipation of the approaching traditional ceremony of "crossing the line." The ship called at Cocos Island and the log records successful sport fishing for sailfish in those waters. The U.S.S. Houston was sunk during the war. A wonderfully light-hearted and very scarce piece for the FDR collector at a time when the clouds of a world war were gathering on the horizon. An exceptionally scarce pamphlet with no mention in Halter and no auction records except for this copy. The War Crisis speech contained in this pamphlet would enter the popular lexicon as the "Stab In The Back" Speech. Delivered at the commencement ceremonies of the University of Virginia President Roosevelt admonished Italy for declaring war on France and entering World War II. His remark that: "On this tenth day of June 1940 the hand that held the dagger was struck into the back of its neighbor" was initially opposed by his advisors but on the train ride to Charlottesville he changed his mind and made headlines. Silk endpapers. Silk sewn-in bookmark. Housed in two piece leather and marbled slipcase rubbed at edges and wear to laid on marbled paper short split to bottom edge. Lacking the silk paste down on rear endpaper. Signed on laid-in limitation leaf by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and presented to Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina President of the Dominican Republic. Limitation page states: "In commemoration of the visit of the President of the United States to the Pan American Peace Conference in South America November and December Nineteen Hundred and Thirty-six seventy-five copies of his address have been designed and printed by the United States Government Printing Office Washington District of Columbia April Nineteen Hundred and Thirty-seven." The copy for President Rafael Molina was delivered to him on October 22 1937 with a note confirming delivery to Secretary Cordell Hull. <br/><br/>President Rafael Trujillo was the dictator who ruled the Dominican Republic from 1930 - 1961. During his time as president he was responsible for thousands of political deaths and assassinations. It was later learned that that CIA played a part in the assassination of Trujillo in 1961. Provenance: Book was acquired from a "senior executive" at the USGPO by New York bookseller Warren Berry. <br/><br/>Records from the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library indicate that "In all seventy-five copies were printed fifty copies in full pigskin with double box type slipcase and twenty-five copies half bound with marbled sides and conventional single slip cases." The library documents also note that "names and titles of the dignitaries who are to receive the book also require careful research" indicating that mistakes were made and certain copies were held back. In quarter leather and marbled boards pull off slipcase. First edition one of 75 but probably one of only 7 in this binding. 97 3 pp. 4to. A sumptously produced White House Christmas book commemorating FDR's nearly month-long diplomatic mission to promote "hemispheric solidarity" with South America. The book was issued in an uncertain though undoubtedly strictly limited number with two issues--in full pigskin as seen here and half pigskin and marbled boards. The colophon calls for 75 copies with the more desirable full pigskin binding scheduled to run to 50 copies for distribution to South American dignitaries and the half-leather isssue of a planned 25 copies reserved for FDR's personal use and distribution at the holidays. Documents at the Library at Hyde Park suggest that the full edition of 75 copies was not achieved cf. Bound in full light bown pigskin with metallic plaque of the Seal of the United States inset into the upper cover now with a fine patina pigskin doublures and silk endpapers. Fine. In quarter leather and marbled boards pull off slipcase. First edition one of 75 but probably one of only 7 in this binding. 97 3 pp. 1 vols. 4to. A sumptously produced White House Christmas book commemorating FDR's nearly month-long diplomatic mission to promote "hemispheric solidarity" with South America. The book was issued in an uncertain though undoubtedly strictly limited number with two issues--in full pigskin as seen here and half pigskin and marbled boards. The colophon calls for 75 copies with the more desirable full pigskin binding scheduled to run to 50 copies for distribution to South American dignitaries and the half-leather isssue of a planned 25 copies reserved for FDR's personal use and distribution at the holidays. Documents at the Library at Hyde Park suggest that the full edition of 75 copies was not achieved cf. Horowitz "Carmichael Collection" and that as few as seven were ever bound in full pigskin. <br/>This copy one of the "foreign" issues was nonetheless INSCRIBED to FDR's Sectretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau on a specially printed leaf: "To the Honorable Henry Morgenthau Jr Secretary of the Treasury of the United States" printed and inscribed below in the President's hand "From his old friend/ Franklin D. Half-inch tear to one of the typed pages and some chipping to 3 pages of memos. In a half red morocco slipcase. A small but exceptional collection of memos and drafts providing rare insight into how FDR ran the Georgia Warm Springs a Georgia resort that he took over and developed into a retreat for polio sufferers after founding the Warm Springs Foundation in 1927. The collection comprises five parts: <br> <br> 1 Autograph manuscript not signed in FDR's hand on Warm Springs letterhead. 5pp. "To all patients.The Foundation is conducting the treatment and the patients come here for a definite purpose. The greater part of each day is taken up with the treatment and while there is no wish to curtail personal liberty or recreation it is essential to prevent fatigue and to work for the highest degree of health for all concerned. That is why simple rules are necessary. Many patients or their families will perhaps consider that circumstances warrant special exceptions to the rules - but this would soon lead to confusion and discrimination. That is why all patients whether of full age or minors whether living in the colony hotel or in private cottages are asked to live up not only to the letter but to the spirit of the rules. We are concerned with the greatest good to the greatest number." <br> <br> 2 Autograph manuscript not signed in FDR's hand. 3pp. "Memo." <br> <br> 3 Typed manuscript dated January 1 1928. 8pp. four drafts. "Subject: The Comfort & Happiness of Patients" signed in type: "E.T. Curtis Mgr." Reading in part: "A prime reason for the operation of Warm Springs by the Hon. Franklin D. Roosevelt and associates is the establishment of the Cure. The happiness of all patients whether in the Hotel in the Colony or in private cottages is of the first importance and will be so considered by all members of the staff." <br> <br> 5 Typewritten newsletter "The Daily Gossip" dated July 6 1927 on the verso of Georgia Warm Springs letterhead. Whimsical report of the disappearance and subsequent location of two of the resort's patients who happened to be young male and inebriated. <br> <br> Roosevelt acted as general manager in charge of setting policy during first year of the foundation the period during which these letters were written. He would ultimately meet his end there two decades later and it was subsequently renamed the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation. This collection of documents outlines policies and reflects Roosevelt's enthusiasm for the resort's therapeutic capabilities from which he felt he had already benefited as well as his sense of great responsibility for visiting patients.
