THEODORE ROOSEVELT
A Fragmentary Theodore Roosevelt Letter Signed As President Mentioning Trump
THEODORE ROOSEVELT 1858-1919. Roosevelt was the Twenty-Sixth President of the United States. TLS. 1pg. N.d. 1905 N.p. A partial typed letter signed “Theodore Roosevelt†as President. It is addressed to Roosevelt’s friend Curtis Guild Jr. 1860-1915 as Governor-elect of Massachusetts. “What a trump Draper is! I think he is one of the very best fellows I know. If Douglas comes here as it is reported he will on Wednesday with the boot and shoe manufactures I am going to make substantially the enclosed statement to him. Faithfully yours Theodore Rooseveltâ€. Draper was probably politician and businessman Eben Sumner Draper 1858-1914 who had just been elected Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts and would eventually succeed Guild as Governor. Douglas may have been Guild’s gubernatorial predecessor William Lewis Douglas 1845-1924 who owned a shoemaking company. The fragmentary letter is faded and in fair condition generally. It is pasted to an image of Roosevelt. unknown books

THEODORE ROOSEVELT
Former President Theodore Roosevelt Writes “I Am Now Receiving Nearly Two Thousand Letters A Week And It Is Almost Impossible To Deal With The Mail…My Experience Has Been Exactly Like Yours As To The Cowardice And Hypocrisy Of So Many Of The Professional ‘Uplifters’ With Whom We Are Dealingâ€
TLS. 2pg. 7†x 10â€. May 27 1916. Oyster Bay. A lengthy and feisty typed letter signed “Theodore Roosevelt†with numerous handwritten corrections throughout. He wrote to Mrs. A.W. Nicholson of Portland Oregon who was a prominent local Republican: “I am now receiving nearly two thousand letters a week and it is almost impossible to deal with the mail and utterly out of the question for me to answer the letters I prize the most with more than a few lines. Your letter has only just been brought before me but not the story of Adison Bennet’s to which you referred. I fear it has gone…I am happy to say I was of a little assistance in getting Homer’s son a place on a railroad where when I last heard from him he was doing well. My dear Mrs. Nicholson if I start a movement to give a stone to Homer you have no conception of the multitude of similar movements I would have to go into. It seems churlish not to do it as you request but if you were in my place you would understand I simply can’t undertake one such matter without inviting like demands in hundreds of other cases. By George I wish I had met your boy so as to recognize him. If I had realized who he was when he was playing polo on Long Island I would have gotten him to come over for lunch. I understand exactly how you feel my dear Mrs. Nicholson in having him among those men the men with whom he is entitled to associate as a gentleman – and I never met a more typical gentleman one whom Mrs. Roosevelt and I both felt in the same way about! than a certain gentlewoman who bought her boys up on a ranch! That was a striking experience you touched on in your letter. Of course my experience has been exactly like yours as to the cowardice and hypocrisy of so many of the professional ‘uplifters’ with whom we are dealing. I have only this time to send you this line of thanks and good will.†Addison Bennett was editor of an Oregon newspaper. The letter has light fading to the purple typewriting and a vertical and horizontal fold. The signature is large and dark as is the handwriting throughout. unknown books
