Washington D.C Christmas 1944. Limited edition of this rare broadside of the "D-Day Prayer" one of only 50 printed copies issued by President Franklin D. Roosevelt for his close friends handsomely printed in gothic type with red blue and gold ink textual embellishments. The broadside measures 14 inches by 21 inches printed in black gothic type capital letters and portions of the heading in red and blue ink. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 20.5 inches by 28 inches. A rare and desirable piece of history. On June 6th 1944 while American and Allied troops stormed the beaches at Normandy Roosevelt released the text of a prayer in the afternoon which he then delivered by radio to the nation at 10:00 p.m. Eastern time. It is estimated according to Andrew Malcolm that as many as 100 million people listened to it. "The prayer does not invoke one faith but the appeal to God is bold and unapologetic. The D-Day Prayer was an extraordinary event in U.S. religious history" Malcolm. The D-Day Prayer reads in full: "Last night when I spoke with you about the fall of Rome I knew at that moment that troops of the United States and our Allies were crossing the Channel in another and greater operation. It has come to pass with success thus far. And so in this poignant hour I ask you to join with me in prayer: Almighty God: Our sons pride of our nation this day have set upon a mighty endeavor a struggle to preserve our Republic our religion and our civilization and to set free a suffering humanity. Lead them straight and true; give strength to their arms stoutness to their hearts steadfastness in their faith. They will need Thy blessings. Their road will be long and hard. For the enemy is strong. He may hurl back our forces. Success may not come with rushing speed but we shall return again and again; and we know that by Thy grace and by the righteousness of our cause our sons will triumph. They will be sore tried by night and by day without rest--until the victory is won. The darkness will be rent by noise and flame. Men's souls will be shaken with the violences of war. For these men are lately drawn from the ways of peace. They fight not for the lust of conquest. They fight to end conquest. They fight to liberate. They fight to let justice arise and tolerance and goodwill among all Thy people. They yearn but for an end of battle for their return to the haven of home. Some will never return. Embrace these Father and receive them Thy heroic servants into Thy kingdom. And for us at home--fathers mothers children wives sisters and brothers of brave men overseas whose thoughts and prayers are ever with them--help us Almighty God to rededicate ourselves in renewed faith in Thee in their hour of great sacrifice. Many people have urged that I call the nation into a single day of special prayer. But because the road is long and the desire is great I ask that our people devote themselves in a continuance of prayer. As we rise to each new day and again when each day is spent let words of prayer be on our lips invoking Thy help to our efforts. Give us strength too--strength in our daily tasks to redouble the contributions we make in the physical and the material support of our armed forces. And let our hearts be stout to wait out the long travail to bear sorrows that may come to impart our courage unto our sons wheresoever they may be. And O Lord give us faith. Give us faith in Thee; faith in our sons; faith in each other; faith in our united crusade. Let not the keenness of our spirit ever be dulled. Let not the impacts of temporary events of temporal matters of but fleeting moment--let not these deter us in our unconquerable purpose. With Thy blessing we shall prevail over the unholy forces of our enemy. Help us to conquer the apostles of greed and racial arrogances. Lead us to the saving of our country and with our sister nations into a world unity that will spell a sure peace--a peace invulnerable to the schemings of unworthy men. This copy belonged to the descendants of John Boettiger who was married to Roosevelt's daughter Anna in 1944 they later divorced. According to family lore Boettiger and Anna assisted in the writing of the speech. According to Curtis Roosevelt Anna's son and John's stepson in his memoir Too Close to the Sun: Growing Up in the Shadow of My Grandparents: Franklin and Eleanor in the spring of 1944 "just before the invasion of Normandy Papa F.D.R. had asked Mummy and Popsie to help him write his D-Day message which he intended to broadcast to Americans on the day that tide-turning operation was launched. I heard my grandfather give much of the credit for composing it to his son-in-law whenever the subject came up. Whichever of my relations produced it it was intensely moving. unknown

Smith inscribed below the image to Boy Scout benefactor Charles D. Hart: ""To Dr: Charles D. Hart with the regards of Theodore Roosevelt. April 8th 1906.""This striking portrait of Teddy Roosevelt was originally etched by Sidney L. Smith and bears Smith's pencil signature in addition to Roosevelt's inscription. Notably Smith was a preferred artist of the Roosevelt family and also designed Mrs. Roosevelt's personal bookplates Cheney et al. The Bookplate Booklet 9. The inscribee Charles D. Hart was a Philadelphia physician. However he was best known for the important contributions he made to the Boy Scouts. Hart was the President of the Philadelphia Council and the changes he made locally resonated nationally. He provided an endowment that included the property for the Hart Scout Reservation Camp Hart now part of the Musser Scout Reservation in Marlborough Township Pennsylvania. Washington: Government Printing Office 1937. Inscribed to his son Octavo. Original blue cloth gilt-stamped anchor device to front cover. Housed in a custom blue chemise within black quarter morocco slipcase spine lettered in gilt blue cloth sides incorporating black morocco label to front of box. Photographic frontispiece pasted in large colour folding chart at rear. Frontispiece and front free endpaper lightly creased else a near-fine copy. Sticker residue on front of slipcase. First and only edition. A superb association copy inscribed by President Roosevelt to his son John A. Roosevelt: "For John A. Roosevelt from his affectionate father Franklin D. Roosevelt". John accompanied his father during the presidential trip aboard the schooner where they fished for tuna and cod. The sojourn was a brief break following Franklin's re-nomination for president and before the 1936 election campaign began in earnest. The book was printed for private distribution not at government expense with no copies for sale. It is a great rarity: in institutional holdings only the Library of Congress and the Dutch Maritime Library copies are known; at auction only two other copies are known to have appeared both also presentation copies. Text planographed from typescript. 1 vols. 4to. Rare FDR Log: A Radio Message from Ernest Hemingway. A log of FDR's inspection cruise of naval bases in the British West Indies. The log is a detailed narrative of the President's activities and the progress of the ship he traveled on the Tuscaloosa. As was customary on these cruises Roosevelt combined sport fishing with his official duties. Opposite page 15 a fine portrait of FDR seated with rod in hand is entitled "The President trolls though Mona Passage." The text for 10 December reads: "At 1000 while proceeding through the Mona Passage sped was reduced to 7 knots while the President trolled from the stern. The water here was over 1500 feet deep and the president's decision to try his luck was based mainly on the contents of a radio message which he had received from Ernest Hemingway recommending the locality as one in which many big fish had been caught and suggesting the use of a feathered hook baited with a piece of pork rind. The President trolled for an hour or more without even a strike and so fishing operations were discontinued at 1130 following which speed was increased to 25 knots." In addition to highlights of official business the log records the fishing activities throughout the cruise Harry Hopkins hooks a 36 inch Grouper but as it was landed by Admiral Mcintire it was "not a legitimate catch for determining fishing honors two members of the party having handled the rod." This log identifies Maj. Gen. Edwin L Watson FDR's military aide as "Pa" and so his authorship of an earlier log can now be assigned. We have never seen this log. INSCRIBED to a reporter on board the cruise "For George Durno / from / Franklin D Roosevelt." From p. 4 of the Log "Messrs. Durno Reynolds and Cornell had transferred from the train to the Benson. These three were the only gentlemen of the fourth estate who were with the President during the cruise." Washington: Government Printing Office 1937. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. A record of a two-week cruise in July 1936. Original blue cloth with an anchor in gilt on the front cover; 8 19 1 pages. Illustrated with a tipped-in frontispiece of the yacht and a large folding chart bound at the end. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the President on the front endpaper: "For Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr./from his affectionate Father/Franklin D. Roosevelt." Franklin Jr. along with his brothers John and James were piloted by their father aboard this charted schooner in a trip James called "Pa's prize cruise." Authorship of this log along with the other eight pre-war logs of presidential cruise-vacations has not been established but according to Halter's bibliography "it is probable that they were the work of several members of each cruise. As far as I had been able to check before this book went to press a total of 17 logs were issued from 1934-1945." All were privately printed in very small numbers and are virtually unobtainable. When they do show up they are usually not signed or inscribed. While never achieving the renown of his father Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr. was a successful congressman 1949-1954 who twice ran for governor of New York and who was a close friend and early backer of John F. Kennedy. He later became a successful businessman. Adams Jr. His personal collation notes are included with this copy dated 5/9/35. Possibly the most detailed collation of this book available he finishes his notes with: "It is therefore obvious that the book was printed so far as possible pp. 31 to 254 incl. on cheaper stock of which it was impossible to find a further supply at short notice making it necessary to fill out with another kind of paper which also had to be used for corrections." He also observes that: "The second gathering of 8's ends with p.30.
