‎Rare plaidoyer en faveur de la liberté religieuse, qui était tout sauf assurée à l'époque où le Directoire renouvelait les dispositions les plus vexatoires.Jean-François de Vauvilliers (1737-1801), helléniste français employé à la Bibliothèque du Roi, fut professeur au Collège de France puis membre de l'Académie des inscriptions en 1782. Membre en 1789 de la Municipalité de Paris, il déploya un grand zèle pour approvisionner la ville au milieu de la disette, où il harangua souvent au péril de ses jours, la foule affamée. Toutefois il se prononça contre les grandes mesures prises alors, telles que l'organisation de la garde Nationale, la liberté des hommes de couleur et la Constitution civile du clergé. Le 10 Août 1792, sa présence parmi les défenseurs des Tuileries lui attira une détention momentanée. Compromis sous le Directoire, dans la conspiration de Brotier, il fut nommé député au Conseil des Cinq-Cents. Sa participation aux conciliabules de Clichy le fit comprendre, au 18 Fructidor, dans la liste de déportation. Ayant eu la chance de franchir la frontière, il passa en Russie et reçut de Paul Ier un accueil flatteur ; mais il succomba par suite des rigueurs du climat. - - VENTE PAR CORRESPONDANCE UNIQUEMENT‎

Il se fera remettre par l'adjudant de place qui commande provisoirement les instructions qui ont été envoyées à tous les commandants des places de la Division de Lombardie (...). La Police intérieure de ces places appartient aux commandants cisalpins".A l'Armée d'Italie depuis 1794, sous-chef d'état-major de Bonaparte en 1795, Martin Vignolle (1763-1824) se distingua à Lodi, au fort d'Urbino, à Arcole où il fut blessé et Castiglione ; il avait été nommé général par Bonaparte en août 1796, commandant le Milanais en août 1797, chef d'état-major sous Berthier (octobre) ; il occupera les fonctions de ministre de la guerre de la jeune république Cisalpine de novembre 1797 à février 1799. Rappelé un temps auprès du Ministère de la Guerre, le général Vignolle servira à nouveau en Italie au moment de la seconde campagne d'Italie jusqu'en 1803, chargé d'organiser l'armée Cisalpine.
