Buffalo Bill:
BUFFALO BILL LE HEROS DU FAR=WEST SEVEN ISSUES OF BUFFALO BILL STORIES IN FRENCH
Dresden & Paris: A. Eichler ca. 1906-1910. Seven volumes 31-32pp. per volume. Printed in two columns in French. Quarto. Color pictorial wrappers. Several wrappers detached and repaired with early cellophane tape. Small chips and tears and occasional larger closed tears in front wrappers up to approximately three inches. Issue numbers on front wrappers occasionally crossed out and replaced with different numbers in ink manuscript. Some foxing and toning. Good. An early European collection of Buffalo Bill stories issued in French by German publisher Alwin Eichler. In 1905 Dresden-based Eichler acquired rights to the Nick Carter and Buffalo Bill stories and immediately set their various translations to print starting a Continental pulp-fiction phenomenon. The present collection comprises a large broken run of what research suggests is the first series of Buffalo Bill dime novels printed in French. All issues were originally sold at 25 centimes included one full story and featured the dramatic color cover art and English cover titles of the earlier American editions. The Buffalo Bill stories were at the peak of their popularity in Europe between 1906 and 1912 the year of the Eichler's death but continued in new periodical editions through the larger part of the twentieth century. This collection includes numbers 32 33 36 37 57 84 and 100 of a series entitled "Les Adventures de Buffalo Bill" on the rear wrappers and "BUFFALO-BILL Le Héros du Far=West" on the first text pages. Despite their wide distribution the early European Buffalo Bill novels today are particularly scarce owing in large part to the cheap paper upon which they were printed. A fantastic collection of pulp Americana in France. "Alwin Eichler" igbserver.wiwi.tu- dresden.de/~thomas/wiki/index.php/Alwin_Eichler . Ronald A. Buffalo Bill:
BUFFALO BILL LE HEROS DU FAR=WEST TWELVE ISSUES OF BUFFALO BILL STORIES IN FRENCH
Brussels: Sobeli ca. 1920s. 12 issues 32pp. per issue. Printed in two columns in French. Quarto. Color pictorial wrappers. Moderate foxing and soiling. Frequent small tears rarely exceeding 1/4-inch at edges. Issue numbers crossed out and replaced in ink manuscript. Good. A collection of twelve Buffalo Bill stories printed in French. Francophone audiences in Europe were first widely exposed to the popular American Buffalo Bill dime novels during the first decade of the 20th century when German publisher Alwin Eichler bought the stories' rights and began issuing translations in several European languages. Sometime after Eichler's death in 1912 - and most likely after the end of the First World War - the Belgian publishing house Sobeli took over the French-language publication of the stories issuing BUFFALO BILLL LE HÉROS DU FAR=WEST in multiple series. The present series which is likely the first issued by Sobeli is printed with the price of 1 Franc 50 an advertisement on the rear wrapper indicates that this is in French rather than Belgian francs through issue number 148 and 1 Fr. 75 for numbers 104-154 a printed label covers the original price for No. 151. Each issue includes one full story and features the dramatic color cover art and English cover titles of the corresponding American edition below the French-language masthead. This collection includes issue numbers 100 112 114 118 120 127 146 148 and 151- 154. A great run of colorful pulp Americana in circa-1920s France. Ronald A. Fullerton "Toward a Commercial Popular Culture in Germany: The Development of Pamphlet Fiction 1871-1914" in JOURNAL OF SOCIAL HISTORY Vol. 12 No. 4 Summer 1979 pp.489-511. igbserver.wiwi.tu- dresden.de/~thomas/wiki/index.php/Alwin_Eichler . BUFFALO BILL'S WILD WEST AND CONGRESS OF ROUGH RIDERS OF THE WORLD
London: Partington 1902. 4xiv3-64xv-xviii pp. Quarto. Original color pictorial wrappers. Wrappers edgeworn chipped along spine. Text lightly tanned. In fair condition. Designated "10th Edition" on the titlepage. A program for Buffalo Bill's Wild West show likely produced to coincide with the show's 1903 tour of Europe. All the advertisements are for British products and the price of the program is six pence. The show performed at the Olympia Theatre and the floor plan for the arena is given as are instructions for travelling to the venue by rail. Most of the text is taken up by biographical information on Buffalo Bill and tales of thrills in the American West but the official program for the British production is also given. The show began with the Star Spangled Banner and a procession by the "Rough Riders of the World" led by Cody on horseback followed by a Pony Express rider "Western Prairie Girls" assorted Indians cavalry veterans and more until finally Cody himself took the stage at the end of the first part of the show. The second half featured a recreation of the Battle of San Juan Hill from the Spanish-American War. The program also takes care to note that "Colonel Cody uses Winchester Rifles and Winchester Ammunition exclusively in all his exhibitions." A nice artifact of the Wild West show at the height of its international fame complete with Buffalo Bill's personal product endorsements and a celebration of the American victory over the Spanish in Cuba. Buffalo Bill:
BUFFALO BILL'S WILD WEST COMBINED WITH PAWNEE BILL'S FAR EAST wrapper title
Buffalo N.Y.: Courier Company 1910. 28pp. including in-text illustrations. Original pictorial dye-cut wrappers. Wrappers chipped along spine and edges. Very good. A very nice program for the combined "Buffalo Bill" and "Pawnee Bill" frontier shows. Colored and tinted illustrations throughout the text depict the Indians elephants Bedouins zouaves Russian dancers and other attractions of the shows which were combined in 1908. A theme of the program is that it is for Buffalo Bill's "farewell tour" though financial problems and contractual obligations kept Cody a performer in the show that made him world famous until the end of his life. Though carrying a copyright date of 1909 on the front wrapper a "parting tribute" to Buffalo Bill in verse is dated 1910. Internal ink stamps indicate that this program might have been sold at a show performed near Madison Wisconsin. Buffalo N.Y.: Courier Company 1910. unknown books
