Il était un partisan ouvert du libéralisme, ce qui est un peu scier la branche sur laquelle il avait construit sa carrière.Envoi autographe de l'auteur au marquis de Lagrange, sénateur. ‎Two volumes in one. pp. 198 (2); 234 (4). Lacks second (redundant) title page. Lightly foxed. Small 12mo. Contemporary full leather binding, spine gold gilt. Slight loss at tail. This is extremely scarce edition. The work explores the manners, customs, religion, entertainments, laws, and philosophies of the ancient Greeks. It was meant as a sort of organized synopsis of 'Voyage du Jeune Anacharsis en Greece' by Abbe Jean Jacques Barthelemy (1716-1795). The first edition of this work was published in 1788 (Paris: De Bure). Due to its immediate and enormous success several editions and reprints followed in short order. There was obviously a need for a handy epitome, which this work supplied. RARE. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! FR3‎
