Galls' neue Entdeckungen in der Gehirn- Schedel- und Organenlehre: mit vorzüglicher Benutzung der Blöde'schen Schrift über diese Gegenstände ; dargestellt und mit Anmerkungen begleitet nach den Gall'schen Unterredungen zu Carlsruhe im Dezember 1806 ; mit Galls' Bildnis und 3 Schedelabbildungen." "Die Gallschen Lehren wurden von Blöde zu Dresden ziemlich faßlich und gut dargestellt wie der Urheber derselben selbst erklärte. Indeß bedürfen jezt durch diese Darstellungen einiger berichtigenden Zusätze welche nach dem Vortrage der Lehren des Herrn Dr. Gall in Carlsruhe im Dezemer 1806 darüber am Karlsruher Hof und hier als anatomische Einleitung voran geschickt wird. Den Blöde'schen Text in Bezug auf die Organenlehre selbst hat man mit Anmerkungen nicht unterbrechen wollen sondern solche am Ende des Werks mit Rückweisung auf den Text angefügt. Auch die Hufelandschen Einwürfe wurden näher beleuchtet mit Hinweisung auf die Widerlegung der Ackermannschen Schrift; nur die kritisirende Bücheranzeige blieb hinweg welche in eigends hiezu errichteten Anstalten besser nachgesehen werden kann. Da die Blöde'sche anatomische Einleitung für Layen in der Medizin ihrer Kürze wegen vielleicht faßlicher ist so hat man ihr die Stelle die sie einnimmt nicht versagen wollen. Aerzte und Naturforscher werden in der nachstehenden Darstellung der Anatomie des Hirns nach Herrn Dr. Gall ec. die theils nach dem mündlichen Vortrage des Entdeckers zu Carlsruhe theils nach der Ackermann'schen Widerlegung der Bischoffschen Darstellung ec. abgefaßt ist mehr Aufschluß in einer Sache finden die freylich fast nicht ohne eigenes Ansehen kann verständlich gemacht werden. Die Wichtigkeit der Entdeckungen des Herrn Dr. Gall zogen diesem originellen Manne auch hier die Achtung und Bewunderung sowohl unseres erlauchtesten Hofes als derjenigen Privatpersonen zu die ihn zu fassen und zu beurtheilen im Stande waren. Daher erachtete man es für Pflicht auch in unserer Sphäre die Gallschen Lehren nach einer verständlichen Ansicht bekannter zu machen um sie immer weiter zu verbreiten und in Umlauf zu bringen; aus welcher Rücksicht die gegenwärtige Schrift ihr Daseyn rechtfertigen mag. / Geschrieben im Jänner 1807." Nach Medizinstudium und Promotion in Wien praktizierte er dort als Arzt und hielt vielbeachtete Vorlesungen über Gehirn und Schädel. Seit 1807/08 lebte er in Paris wo er seine "Organologie" bzw. Phrenologie - die Lehre von lokalisierten Seelenvermögen im Gehirn und deren Ausdruck in der Schädelform - weiter entwickelte und publizierte. Seine Vorträge und Schädelsammlungen fanden europaweit große Resonanz und beeinflussten Anthropologie Psychiatrie und Kriminalistik. Gall wurde von Zeitgenossen als origineller wenn auch umstrittener Forscher wahrgenommen; seine Phrenologie wurde im 19. Jahrhundert zunächst begeistert aufgenommen später jedoch wissenschaftlich weitgehend verworfen. In der Medizingeschichte gilt er heute als Wegbereiter lokalisatorischer Hirnforschung dessen Fehlannahmen wichtige Diskussionen über Gehirnfunktionen anregten; das Porträt Delpechs wird häufig in Darstellungen zur Geschichte der Neurowissenschaften und der Phrenologie reproduziert. Fine set. <p> edition revised of the Anatomie et physiologie du systeme nerveux1810-19 which introduced the theory of localization of cerebral function. See Garrison-Morton 1389. This new edition in reduced format was revised by Gall without the collaboration of Spurzheim. </p> <p>The volumesexcept vol. 3 bear the AUTOGRAPH SIGNATURE of Gall on the versos of their half-titles to protect against pirated editions. In order to hold the price down Gall did not republish the magnificent folio-sized plates of the first edition for the second and he deleted the portion on the descriptive anatomy of the brain and nervous system concentrating on the physiology. In the sixth volume however Gall discussed the treatises on neuroanatomy and neurophysiology published between 1819 and 1825 as a way of answering the criticisms of his work by such authors as Flourens.
