‎Un recueil de pièces rares de l'infatigable Grille Le premier ouvrage est un recueil factice pour lequel l'auteur fit imprimer un titre général et des pièces liminaires (épître dédicatoire, lettres de Championnet à sa mère, notes d'Esmenard). Il nous apprend dans l'épître qu'il rassemble ici ses « lettres et pièces historiques et philosophiques » en un volume, au nombre de 30 exemplaires seulement. Il est ainsi constitué de brochures en éditions originales non réimprimées publiées en 1846-47 et probablement avant pour la dernière : Lettre à M. le Dr Pariset, sur les médecins et la médecine, sur l'Institut et le Collège de France, sur Champfort, Andrieux, Mirabeau, le tombeau d'Agnès Sorel : élections, exclusions, réintégrations, querelle entre un prélat et un archevêque. (Techener, 1847) ; Lettres à M. Étienne Vieusseux sur le Brabant et Anvers au temps de l'Empire, l'Institut et le Directoire, Napoléon, Chénier, Bénezech, Lacépède, Laborde, M. de Châteaubriand, etc. (id.) ; Lettre à M. le Marquis de La Porte sur des livres, des événements, des hommes de l'ancien et du nouveau régime. [Techener, 1846]) ; Épître à la Reine sur la restauration d'une église de village (s. l. n. d. ) L'exemplaire de La bibliothèque Mazarine contient à la suite deux Lettres à M. Aimé-Martin qui, non présentes ici, sont remplacées par deux brochures non moins rares, en éditions originales, L'Essai sur Revellière-Lépeaux et la pièce du Jeune romantique. Cette comédie qui n'en était pas vraiment une prit le nom de tableau satirique et ses cinq actes prirent le nom de parties. Elle est habile cependant tel le passage avec les deux libraires (pp. 20 à 26). L'ensemble de ces textes ne fut publié qu'à très peu d'exemplaires. François-Joseph Grille (1782 - 1853), fonctionnaire, écrivain malicieux et infatigable, journaliste irrespectueux, fut bibliothécaire de sa ville natale Angers. Il manifestera sa vie durant une véritable passion du service public. Il occupa plusieurs emplois au sein du ministère de l'Intérieur. En 1814, il fut nommé chef de la 3e division, sciences et beaux-arts de ce ministère puis nommé commissaire du gouvernement provisoire le 30 mars 1848. Ses différentes carrières au sein de l'administration furent interrompues en raison des prises de position qui l'opposèrent au pouvoir en place. Son oeuvre politique et littéraire, publiée sous un grand nombre de pseudonyme, « fut sous-tendue par une soif de justice sociale et la recherche d'un humanisme modéré, elles provoqueront sa quatrième et ultime destitution. » (Claudie Gohier Segretain) PROVENANCE : Ex-libris contrecollé au contreplat supérieur d'Eugène Daurand-Forgues, fils du critique Paul-Emile Daurand-Forgues.
