1 leaf.A letterpress printed form for a shipping contract with the Dutch West India Company WIC printed explicitly for shipments to Curaçao. It was filled in by a WIC ship’s captain Jan Smit in Amsterdam on 11 June 1771. Jan Smit captain of the Neptunus acknowledges receipt of and agrees to ship two chests from Aron Colace the elder with his identification mark drawn in the margin: a three-leafed clover above a letter C for shipment to Imanuel da Costa Gomes & broeders = brothers. Smit intends to set sail with the Neptune operating from the island Texel on the first favourable winds to Curaçao. Imanuel da Costa Gomes & brothers are to pay 14 guilders shipping costs. In this period the Dutch West-Indies Company WIC was in its second phase. In its first period mainly in the seventeenth century the focus of the Company was primarily on the disruption of Spanish trade ships that transported valuable goods from the Americas to Europe. After the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 piracy of Spanish ships was forbidden and the WIC ended up in decline. Decades later the company was revived and from then on called the “second” WIC with a new focus on the slave trade from Africa to the Americas amongst other activities. The present shipping deed is from the latest period of the company just before it begun its final decline again and ultimately its nationalization in 1792.In good condition. Two folds two small chips of paper at the edges some spots in the margins.l For background information: W. Chr.
