Of all the 17th- and 18th-century books "on military technology no works had greater influence or enjoyed greater prestige than those of Sebastien Le Prestre de Vauban the great military engineer of the reign of Louis XIV" Guerlac. Although a highly practical man and not a theoretician Vauban had written down the secrets of his success in the building and capturing of fortresses between 1669 and 1704. Vauban's strategic superiority could only remain if this information was kept secret so his texts circulated only within a very select circle. After Vauban's death they were leaked. In the dedication and introduction the Dutch publisher describes how he managed to obtain a copy which was so expensive partly due to the many illustrations that only princes ambassadors "et autres seigneurs" could afford it. "By the time the treatises became available Vauban's early readers must have been ready to believe that the text finally being made public did in fact contain incredible military secrets and have the power to make nations invincible. No other treatise of siegecraft had been surrounded by such secrecy" DeJean. The first volume published in 1737 did not contain all the master's secrets. It contained Vauban's treatise on the attack of fortified places but the added part on defence was actually written by a colleague seigneur Deshoulières 1621-1693. A second volume published in 1742 contained Vauban's treatise on military mining first published in 1740 and a general treatise on war written by another "eminent officer".With library stamps. Binding worn and front hinge cracked. Its two most notable features are its understanding of the central role of fiscal policy in economic reform - the result of an exceptionally comprehensive grasp of the economic process - and its use of detailed numerical data to substantiate conclusions. Schumpeter pronounced the work "unsurpassed before or after in the neatness and cogency of the argument … Nobody ever understood better the true relation between facts and argument. It is this that makes him an economic classic in the eulogistic sense of the word and a forerunner of modern tendencies" History of Economic Analysis p. 204. According to Boislisle the first edition was printed in Rouen in 1706 at the initiative of the Abbé de Beaumont who is actually credited with the authorship of the work by Boisguilbert. Vauban had the sheets bound by the widow of a certain Fétil and took great pains that the book did not have any public circulation. It was prohibited on 14 February 1707 but apparently the police were only able to seize two copies described as in "veau fauve" and marbled parchment. Binding rubbed label chipped head of spine slightly chipped upper hinge cracked but still holding on the cords sturdy old paper repair to front inner hinge lower hinge starting to crack covers slightly scuffed corners slightly worn ink name on front pastedown and at top of title page small ink stain on 1 page no loss 6 neat ink notes 2 plates have small pale stain to lower margin 1 plate slightly ragged at fore-edge not affecting image a couple of plates misfolded and protruding slightly beyond text block final plate has 2 small edge tears and a small split on 1 fold all neatly repaired. Text block tight and firm a good copy. Sebastien Le Prestre Seigneur de Vauban and later Marquis de Vauban 16331707 commonly referred to as Vauban was a Marshal of France and the foremost military engineer of his age. He was famous for his skill in both designing fortifications and in breaking through them. He also advised Louis XIV on how to consolidate France's borders to make them more defensible. He made the radical suggestion of giving up some land that was indefensible to allow for a stronger less porous border with France's neighbours. He was involved in the Siege of Maastricht 1673 the Siege of Valenciennes 1677 and the fortification of the cities of Strasbourg 1681 and Landau 1688. Often attributed to the pen of Vauban this work is actually a translation of the Chevalier de Cambray's "Maniere de fortifier de Mr. de Vauban" and was first published in English in 1691. The translator's Dedicatory Epistle is signed A. S. Abel Swall. Recognised as an important work in its field the English edition was reprinted twice more in the 18th century after our fourth edition in 1748 and 1762. However it is very scarce in any edition. The book is in 3 sections: pages 1-61 A New Treatise of Geometry; pages 61-186 A Treatise of Fortification; pages 187-213 Military orders and the Art of Gunnery.
