È invece per lo più ignota la vicenda delle personalità con cui più vivamente e drammaticamente si intrecciò la sua storia e, in parte, la sua attività: Georg, il fratello minore, medico, dirigente comunista, soppresso a Mauthausen nel 1942, la sorellina Dora, sociologa e attivista, esule a Parigi con Walter dal 1933 e morta in Svizzera dov'era in esilio, la cognata Hilde, militante clandestina antinazista e madre di un bambino "meticcio" da sottrarre allo sterminio, poi giudice supremo nella DDR e ministro della Giustizia, distintasi nella prosecuzione giudiziaria dei criminali nazisti. L'autore di questa inchiesta storica, basata su documenti sconosciuti e su conversazioni con i protagonisti, li definisce "una famiglia tedesca". E infatti la loro vicenda collettiva di disperazione di morte e di coraggio, è aggrovigliata in modo indistinguibile con la stessa storia della Germania. E il racconto di essa si staglia sullo sfondo della vita in Germania, prima e dopo il 1933.

Conclusa la guerra, anche il rientro in patria non è semplice: gli incubi lo tormentano, portandolo a rifugiarsi nell'alcol. È il matrimonio con una ragazza di buona famiglia, bella e intelligente, insieme alla riscoperta della fede, a riportarlo alla vita. Dal libro è tratto l'omonimo film di Angelina Jolie.
