Publisher's decorative pale green paper covers printed in black with 'Gothic' title in two lines some show the title over three lines priority unknown. Original price 1d.6s. Some trivial handling chip to lower quarter of spine; near fine. An uncommon printing not quite conforming to Mason's version; the preliminary leaves and adverts were never included here ie the eralier text yet the revised later address appears on the imprint. The first Ukrainian translation of the well-known children's fantasy story by the Irish author Oscar Wilde. The story's plot revolves around a giant who builds a wall to keep children out of his garden but learns compassion from the innocence of the children. The book was published in the camp for displaced persons DP in Germany and authorized by HQ EUCOM Civil Affairs Division in July 1947. Se è vero che la vita va vissuta come un'opera d'arte, allora la vita che qui si racconta, attraverso lettere, biglietti, fitti scambi a stretto giro di posta, non è solo fulgida e avventurosa, o accorata e straziante come la più immortale delle tragedie, ma è anche e soprattutto una testimonianza letteraria fra le più alte e inconfondibili dell'Ottocento - e del Novecento, perché la voce di Oscar Wilde ha il potere incomparabile di farsi contemporanea a ogni epoca. Esteta, drammaturgo, poeta e romanziere, Wilde inizia a scrivere lettere quando, giovane talentuoso, frequenta uno dei più esclusivi college del paese; in seguito, è alle parole rivolte agli amici che affida l'ascesa vertiginosa del proprio astro - cene, feste, prime teatrali, articoli sui giornali - e il turbine rapinoso di scandali e polemiche che lo avvolge nel 1889, con l'uscita del "Ritratto di Dorian Gray" e l'incontro con Lord Alfred Douglas, il famigerato Bosie. All'approssimarsi del nuovo secolo, però, i toni mutano: da sfavillanti si fanno cupi, ombrosi. Sono gli anni del processo per oscenità, del carcere di Reading, del "De Profundis".
