One of the scarcest architectural books about Kentucky traditional architecture and gardens, and rare in any condition. It was produced with the assistance of a group of about 200 subscribers, who quickly brought out another edition after the first limited edition of 250 copies was gone. Illustrated throughout in black & white and printed on a heavy stock glossy paper, it has survived relatively well. All text and illustrations clean. Winnifred Fales became famous in the period between the wars, for her staunch opposition to any kind of modern design. This survey of English architecture from the 15th through the 18th centuries, focusses on the background architecture, the smaller houses and farm buildings that were built by carpenters and local people. In particular Rosenberg looks at the Cotswold district and what is known as the "Cotswold type" of building, which dates from 1570 to 1700. Several examples also from Surrey, Sussex and Kent. Cotswold builders used limestone, the other counties used the material they had to hand, which was timber. So these styles involved extensive timber and plaster-work. A 2 page preface and a short index to the subjects of the plates, and then 110 plates of careful drawings of not only old oak furniture, but also architectural woodwork, plasterwork, metalwork and glazing. Each plate identifies the subject of the drawing, for example:Old Oak Chest at Little Moreton Hall, or Pew framing in aisle west of nave at Astbury Church, Cheshire, and so forth. A good rebacked cloth copy with gilded titles, still bright, and nice bevelled green cloth boards, inside many plates are soiled, mostly in the margins, there are a few handstamps inside the front and back covers. The stamps are from "Schmeig & Kotzian", the famous furniture makers in New York in the first half of the 20th century, so this copy probably came from their studio. Large folio, 15" high X 11" wide. This is a very good hardcover copy in printed red cloth covers, with only light wear outside. Inside generally clean, but foxing sporadically throughout. This report by the Director of Archeology in Baroda State, recounts the activities of the Department in the years 1936-37. Information about exploration of recently unearthed structures, finds of sculptures, coins, and other archeological material, plus conservation efforts. Also included is an appendix with the accounts of a Dutch traveller to Baroda State in 1625. This is a presentation copy signed by the author and dated 1941 on the front endpaper. The book has been less than carefully bound, in that the pages show wrinkling down the center or "gutter" of the book where the pages are glued together. 14 plates in black & white, including 1 color plate of a fresco. This is a good hardcover reference copy of this portfolio with text booklet and 80 loose plates. Recently de-accessioned from a public library. The purple and gilt embossed boards are clean and not marked, but the spine is defective, and has been repaired internally. Text in French. Essay and notes to the plates by Dumonthier. These are fabrics that were used to cover furniture. All plates printed in grey or pale green, or light brown. All plates identified as to maker, provenance. The paper is somewhat britlle, the edges are chipped. Still a fantastic collection of textile designs in use in the 17th and 18th centuries in France for the royal commissions. This is a very good x-library copy in the original olive green bevelled cloth boards, elaborately decorated with an architectural scene in black and gilt. Library book plate on endpaper. Small faint handstamp to top right corner of all the plates. Preface and 43 pages of text and 5 pages of plate titles and descriptions + 30 full-page lithograph plates in black & white. The plates include full-page elevations, plans, and interior views of the panelling, fenestration, staircases, etc. All the mansions illustrated are large scale grand buildings in the Queen Anne, and other well known European styles:Jacobean, Louis XVI, Adams style, etc. The book has a new cloth spine, with a white printed paper title label on the spine. Inside the blue endpapers and many of the pages are chipped around the edges, but the binding is very tight. Paper tape repair to hinges. Page-edges gilt. 15" high X 10 1/2" wide.
