Wise surmises that some sets "are evidentially 'remainders' of the Second edition with new title pages" and that seems to be the case here. Limited to 1500 copies signed by the author on final page of preface. Royal 8vo 258 x 170mm: xxii400; viii394; 4362pp with 53 engraved lithographed and mezzotint plates protected by guard tissues including seven hand-colored and wood engraved illustrations in the text all after drawings by Ruskin. Publisher's original chocolate brown decorative cloth covers with elaborate floral design in blind framing keyhole vignette in gilt drawn from plate XI of vol. II spines stamped in blind and in gilt crowned by Lion of St. Mark's top edges gilt others rough-trimmed terracotta end papers. Some small areas of darkening to covers; rear hinge of vol. 2 partly cracked else a superb tightly bound set fresh and bright throughout with fine renditions of the plates. Wise 297. PMM 315. Wright III 1255. The title novella originally appeared in the August 1898 issue of Harper's Magazine with illustrations by Peter Newell. A year later it was published in book form with two short stories by Crane "The Blue Hotel" and "His New Mittens." The first British edition which added an additional four stories was published in 1901. The Monster was Crane's first story to feature the fictional town of Whilomville which would eventually serve as the setting of 14 stories. An African-American coachman named Henry Johnson who is employed by the town's physician Dr. Trescott becomes horribly disfigured after he saves Trescott's son from a fire. When Henry is branded a "monster" by the town's residents Trescott vows to shelter and care for him resulting in his family's exclusion from the community. Written in a more exact and less dramatic style than The Red Badge of Courage The Monster received mixed reviews from contemporary critics but is now considered one of Crane's best works. adapted from Wikipedia N. Original colour printed boards with green cloth backed-strip illustrated insides of the boards; pp. xxiv 166 2 blank all pages within printed red double-fillets with a fine photogravure frontispiece tinted in green after a photo by Henry Cave with tissue guard two colour-lithographic maps 24 plates after photos numerous photographic illustrations in the text; extremities minimally rubbed a few negligible spots here and there light toning to maps otherwise a fine copy. Very rare first edition of the official exhibition catalogue of Ceylon at the Paris World Fair of 1900 lavishly produced and illustrated by George Justin Athelstan Skeen the Ceylon Government printer from 1881 to 1906 who exhibited his own products at the fair. One section of the Sri Lankan fair stand was devoted to photography and all photographers exhibiting contributed to the book: Cane author of Golden Tips Skeen A.W. Andree & Co and A. W. A. Plate & Co. as well as Andree & Sligh Ltd the latter being responsible for the colour printing of the binding. The company applied the then pioneering three-colour printing technique to be used soon afterwards in A. & C. Black colour books. Of course the main focus of this volume is tea production and export; however all other aspects of Sri Lanka are described and illustrated from ethnography and society infrastructure and agriculture commerce art and natural history with some impressive scenes of elephants working being washed and in the wild. We were able to locate copies at Harvard and in France only; not in COPAC. hardcover
