Italian soprano Gina Cigna made her debut at La Scala in 1926. In 1929 she "returned there and sang every season until 1943 establishing herself as a leading Italian dramatic soprano. She was particularly admired as Norma La Gioconda Turandot and in Verdi; she also took part in important revivals of Alceste 1935 and L'incoronazione di Poppea 1937 at Florence and was the KostelniÄka in the first performance in Italy of Jenůfa 1941 Venice. Cigna made her Covent Garden début as Marguerite in La damnation de Faust in 1933 and returned there in 1936 1937 and 1939. She sang at the Metropolitan 1937-8 and also in San Francisco and Chicago. In 1947 following a car accident she retired devoting much of the rest of her life to teaching." She was a highly dramatic and musical singer with a dark voice and an attractive rapid vibrato. Prolific throughout his short life he wrote notable works in the Realist tradition as well as early examples of American Naturalism and Impressionism. He is recognized by modern critics as one of the most innovative writers of his generation. At the time of his death Crane was considered an important figure in American literature. After he was nearly forgotten for two decades critics revived interest in his life and work. Crane's writing is characterized by vivid intensity distinctive dialects and irony. Common themes involve fear spiritual crises and social isolation. Although recognized primarily for <i>The Red Badge of Courage</i> which has become an American classic Crane is also known for his poetry journalism and short stories such as "The Open Boat" "The Blue Hotel" "The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky" and <i>The Monster</i>. First edition first printing under Crane's name.<br /><br /><i>Maggie: A Girl of the Streets</i> is an 1893 novella by American author Stephen Crane 1871-1900. The story centers on Maggie a young girl from the Bowery who is driven to unfortunate circumstances by poverty and solitude. The work was considered risque by publishers because of its literary realism and strong themes. Crane who was 22 years old at the time financed the book's publication himself although the original 1893 edition was printed under the pseudonym Johnston Smith. After the success of 1895's <i>The Red Badge of Courage</i> <i>Maggie</i> was reissued in 1896 with considerable changes and re-writing. In a footnote note 1 p. 83 Pauli introduced for the first time the probability for a many-particle system with coordinates q1. . .qf: "q1. . .qf .dq1. . .dqf is the probability that in the relevant quantum state of the system the coordinates simultaneously lie in the relevant volume element of configuration space." Thus Pauli's paper is a contribution to the ongoing problem of the appropriate application of Bose-Einstein statistics or Fermi-Dirac statistics. In this paper Pauli wrote "We shall take the point of view also advocated by Dirac that the Fermi and not the Einstein-Bose statistics applies to the material gas" thus clearing up the matter. Stallo's The concepts and theories of modern physics the importance of which is explained in four columns in the DSB was reprinted in 1960. Johann Bernhard Stallo was born in Sierhausen Oldenburg Germany. After an early education in Germany he emigrated to the United States in 1839. He pursued a varied career in teaching and the law in the United States in Cincinnati and New York City. Lawes used what he learned from agricultural experiments to produce "super-phosphate" and other products by which he became quite rich. In 1889 Lawes put Rothamsted under the control of the Lawes Agricultural Trust with an endowment of £100000 so that its work would not cease with his death. This is copy 111 issued to R W Ferguson of Flushing New York. Betts: 25-26 .1st edition. Contains the report of the Congress Committee and all 432 games with notes by Steinitz. This was a 20-man Double Round Robin Tournament. One of the longest tournaments in history. In the first half of the tournament draws were counted as a half point. In the second half they were replayed once. Between the 38 regular rounds 8 replay rounds and 4 game playoff for first at the end there were 50 rounds all told !. Like the 4th Congress this tournament consisted largely of foreign masters. The retirement of Captain Mackenzie seems to date from this time though some sources credit him as US Champion until his death in 1891 giving the top American finisher some claim on being de facto US Champion. The top American finisher was Solomon Lipschutz who finished in 6th Place with a score of 22-9=7 Condition: Some internal pencil markings and notations. Lettersheets were a convenient and thrifty form of stationery in an era which postage was calculated on the number of sheets used. Folded in half these four pages were charged as a single page.<br/><br/>Charles Magnus emigrated to New York with his family in the late 1840s. His older brother published the weekly German language newspaper Deutsche Schnellpost and it was there that Charles learned the trade eventually going out on his own. In the guises of a publisher map dealer bookseller and stationer he issued more than a thousand pieces of illustrated stationery - lettersheets envelopes song sheets as well as prints - usually copying the work from other sources without attribution sometimes altering the images slightly. They all appear to be rushing towards the battlefield which is visible in the distance with clouds of smoke from fired weapons.<br/><br/><br/><br/>A dashing depiction by the French painter who specialized in landscapes and fans. Letter written by Sarah Porter founder of Miss Porter's School for Girls to a friend and possibly former student regretfully declining an invitation to her wedding. Miss Porter studied privately with Yale Professors. and her brother Noah later became President of Yale. She was an opponent of women's suffrage. <br/>She notes in this letter that affairs at the school will keep her far too busy to make the journey. Sarah Porter 1813-1900 founded her school in Farmington in 1843 setting it up as an institution at which girls could receive a well-rounded academic education. She writes in part:<br/> <br/>"My dear Mary I thank you heartily that you have desired me as one of your wedding guests and I should be very happy in being with you at this so happy moment of your life. I could not easily under any circumstances easily leave school for so long a time as a journey to Newton would require - but now Mr. Brandt's wretched health renders him unable to teach and his classes fall daily into my care so that my place is daily here. Your own and your brother's wedding at once will not only doubly crown the day but give promise to multiplied successive anniversaries. unknown books

ELABORATELY ANNOTATED PHOTO ALBUM CHRONICLING A YOUNG MAN'S LIFE BETWEEN 1919 AND 1923
Album. Very good. An elaborately annotated photo album created by Harold Roberts "Bobs" Quinney 1900-72 chronicling his life between 1919 and 1923 including his move to the United States from Ottawa Ontario Canada travel aboard a merchant ship life in New York and his home in Los Angeles. The album is filled with 192 black and white images measuring 2 x 2 1/2". Each of the images is held in place with black paper inset matting and accompanied by handwritten captions written in white pencil. The photo album opens in 1919 with Quinney's trip to New York. There are four photos showing a large gathering of military on the street labeled "the homecoming 1919" referring to soldiers returning from World War I pictures of the Bronx Zoological Park Grant's Tomb Coney Island and other New York sights. In 1920 it would appear he joined the crew of a Standard Oil tanker and visited Mexico the Brazilian Coast and Argentina. A series of 12 photos show travel through the Panama Canal. The album also contains photographs of family and friends then transitions in 1922 to images of Southern California where he took a job as a drug clerk and officially emigrated to the U.S. According to ancestry records Quinney was one of 11 children. He married in 1926 moved to San Francisco and graduated from dental college. The oblong black buckram album and photographs are in very good condition and provide a pictorial story of one young man's new life in America. unknown books

Jonesville VA. unbound. very good. Exceptional signature: "A. L. Pridemore - Jonesville - VA" executed on a 5.5" x 1.5" slip of paper. Fine condition.<br/><br/> American politician from Virginia who also served as an officer fighting for the Confederate States of America. During the Civil War Pridemore raised a company of Volunteer Infantry for the Pound Gap Battalion of the Confederate Army and was commissioned as its Captain on October 17th 1861. In June 1862 he received a promotion of Major. Following reorganization after the Battle of Cumberland Gap his unit was reconstituted as Company S of the 64th Virginia Mounted Infantry under Colonel Campbell Slemp and Pridemore became a Lieutenant Colonel on December 14th 1862. He was promoted to full Colonel in 1864 and commanded the 64th Virginia Cavalry until the end of the war.<br/><br/> unknown books
