L'opera, risultato di attenti studi archivistici, ripercorre varie virulente epidemie di peste in ordine cronlogico a partire da quella d'Egitto ai tempi di Mosè, proseguendo per quella nel campo greco di Troia, a Roma al tempo di Romolo, ad Atene, a Roma durante l'assedio di Alarico, la peste nera testimonita da Petrarca e Boccaccio, a Bologna e a Modena nel 1362 ecc. ecc. fino al 1832. Così in uno stelloncino, sotto la rubrica di margine «Lungo la via», l'Osservatore Romano, la domenica 15 giugno, definiva il tricentenario della peste manzoniana. Qualche accenno alla mesta ricorrenza, per verità, lo fecero, specie i giornali, ma fu cosa di tanto poco che davvero si poteva definirlo un «tricentenario non celebrato». E tra le ragioni «buone e cattive», come «accade sempre e per tutto», che hanno determinato, più della semplice dimenticanza, il calcolato oblio della ricorrenza, è parso a noi dovessero pesare non poco le difficoltà gravi sotto l'un e l'altro aspetto: storico e letterario di rifare un tratto di storia che uno scrittore sommo quale il nostro Manzoni ha illustrato con arte probabilmente irraggiungibile. Dovette essere convinzione generale che non si potessero cavare dai documenti sgualciti, disordinati, per poco sospetti tuttora di peste, racconti più emozionanti, più vivi, di quelli che ne trasse il maestro. La stessa assicurazione lasciata da lui, quasi a rincuorare quanti fossero solleticati a rifare il suo cammino, è suonata a noi una delle solite allegre ed amare beffe dell'autore, punto amorevole coi pedestri chiosatori. Noi, scrive il Manzoni esaminando e confrontando, con molta diligenza se non altro, tutte le relazioni stampate, più d'una inedita, molti (in ragione del poco che ne rimane) documenti, come dicono uffiziali, abbiam cercato di farne non già quel che si vorrebbe, ma qual che cosa che non è stato ancor fatto. Per the artist this work originally produced by her in 1967 is "about a man who is killed by the plague in London in 1665; I have brought him to life again so that he can tell his story." The story unfolds as a series of nine eerily wonderful etchings by Angela Lemaire which were inspired by the sufferings of the plague victims. Each enclosed in a separate leaf and introduced with a quotation from scripture also dealing with suffering with each plate numbered and signed by her. Ms. Lemaire's Afterword tells the story of her inspiration for the work and the essay by Anthony Dyson discusses the making and proofing of the plates which is a story worthy on its own merits. ___DESCRIPTION: Unbound folio sheets each with letterpress printing on the first and last pages inserted between the plates the images from zinc plates with each plate signed and numbered by the artist in pencil. The eight intaglio plates images 2 through 9 are each tissue-guarded; Image 1 and the original Title page are both woodcuts. Folio size the signatures being just under 15" tall the work is unpaginated containing 52 pages excluding cuts and images; type Baskerville paper Somerset soft white satin; limited edition of 25 copies for sale plus 3 NFS this no. 3 signed by the artist on the colophon page. 1 volume in-12 (150 x 88 mm) de 6 ff. n. ch. et 248-(3) pages. Reliure strictement de l'époque (première reliure) en parchemin souple, titre à l'encre en haut du dos. Ecriture enfantine de l'époque (XVIIe s.) au second plat. Quelques ressauts de cahiers sans gravité. Bon papier. Collationné complet. Nouvelle édition parue un an après les premières éditions datées de 1628. Cet connut un succès considérable si l'on s'en tient au nombre d'éditions parues entre 1628 et 1629. Ainsi on répertorie une édition donnée à Vienne, par Jean Poyet (1628), à Besançon, par Denys Couché (1628), à Bourg-en-Bresse, par Jean Tainturier (1628), une édition de Grenoble, par Huet (1629) avec mention de troisième édition, à Lyon, chez François La Bottière (1629), à Pont-à-Mousson (sans nom, 1629), outre notre édition de Paris, chez Chappelet (1629). Il semblerait donc que la volonté ait été de disséminé jusqu'en province ce manuel à l'usage chrétien effrayé de la peste. La première édition semble être celle de Besançon (1628) dans laquelle l'imprimeur Denys Couché dédie son travail à la ville de Besançon, protégée du fléau de la peste par les prières publiques organisées par le gouverneur de la ville et les édiles publiques. Bien que présentes au catalogue collectif des bibliothèques de France, toutes ces éditions sont rares si l'on se réfère à leur quasi absence sur le marché du livre rare. Estienne Binet (1569-1639) est né à Dijon. Il occupa des rôles importants au sein de la Compagnie de Jésus. Condisciple de François de Sales, on lui doit plus d'une quarantaine d'ouvrages de piété. On a écrit de lui qu'il avait « un style clair et gracieux », d' « une spiritualité souriante » proche de celle de son ami de toujours François de Sales, son oeuvre abondante fournissant encore l'occasion d' « une lecture spirituelle à la fois plaisante et profitable ». Blaise Pascal est moins indulgent avec lui dans ses Provinciales : « Mais si vous voulez, mes Pères, avoir maintenant le plaisir de voir en peu de mots une conduite [...] qui porte véritablement le caractère de l'esprit de bouffonnerie, d'envie et de haine, je vous en donnerai des exemples. Et afin qu'ils vous soient plus connus et plus familiers, je les prendrai de vos écrits mêmes. Car, pour commencer par la manière indigne dont vos auteurs parlent des choses saintes, soit dans leurs railleries, soit dans leurs galanteries, soit dans leurs discours sérieux, trouvez-vous que tant de contes ridicules de votre Père Binet, dans sa Consolation des malades, soient fort propres au dessein qu'il avait pris de consoler chrétiennement ceux que Dieu afflige? [...] ». Il ne faut chercher aucune médecine du corps dans ces pages mais seulement une médecine de l'âme destinée à soulager les pêcheurs, à les entraîner au repentir et à la contrition, la peste, cette terrible maladie contagieuse, alors encore non explicitée, à les mener à la "bonne mort", digne, sereine. "L'ouvrage est écrit d'une plume assez différente, dans son expression, de celle qui rédigea Consolation et réjouissance. Elle est, dans l'ensemble, moins pittoresque, moins truculente, légèrement conventionnelle et académique ; celui qui attend de notre jésuite quelque description putride et vermineuse serait déçu. La décence règne d'un bout à l'autre et presque la mesure. Cependant l'ouvrage ne manque pas d'intérêt et mériterait d'être offert au public. Il offre des envolées et des tirades du meilleur effet. L'idée principale soutenue par le P. Binet anticipe sur les thèses de Leibniz au sujet de l'existence du meilleur des mondes possibles. L'optimisme chrétien est poussé à l'extrême du paradoxe : la peste est un bienfait. La terreur qu'elle inspire repose sur une erreur de jugement. Elle ouvre la porte du ciel à des milliers de gens qui, continuant de mener leur vie terrestre de pécheurs insouciants, risqueraient bien d'aller rôtir en enfer après leur mort. Elle est une bénédiction pour les enfants qui n'ont pas le temps de grandir et d'offenser le bon Dieu. Celui qui a le coeur droit, l'âme légère et l'esprit éclairé par la grâce n'a rien à redouter. Toute cette réflexion illustre parfaitement la doctrine du stoïcisme chrétien, très répandue chez les Jésuites. Sénèque est maintes fois cité. La prière vaut mieux que tous les aphorismes d'Hippocrate et toutes les recettes de médecine. [...]" (Consolation et réjouissance pour les malades et personnes affligées en forme ... Etienne Binet, Claude Louis-Combet, note subséquente). "La littérature vouée à l'évocation des grandes épidémies de peste, du XIVe au XVIIIe siècle, met ordinairement l'accent sur la détresse des populations frappées par ce fléau, contre lequel les ressources de la médecine s'avéraient totalement impuissantes. L'imagination de la peste a nourri non seulement l'angoisse des contemporains mais le pathos des artistes et des écrivains. A l'opposé de toute littérature doloriste, cet opuscule d'Etienne Binet, composé en temps et lieu de ravages pestilentiels, veut éveiller l'esprit du lecteur au jeu de la grâce qui se trame dans les malheurs de l'époque. Un optimisme radical court à travers ces pages qu'inspirent quelques vérités élémentaires de la foi chrétienne. Dieu ne peut vouloir le mal. La peste, dans son implacabilité destructrice, doit être déchiffrée comme un signe, un message que le Ciel adresse à l'humanité afin de la remettre sur la voie véritable du salut." Avez-vous point honte de craindre ce que vos laquais bravent, et dont une chambrière de village se moque, et meurt toute debout, et les enfants mêmes s'en jouent dans le berceau. N'avez-vous pas bien autant de courage qu'un garçon de village, et mille femelettes qui ne daignent pas avoir peur. [...]" (extrait). Provenance : La Martinière (signature autographe sur la page de titre). Il pourrait s'agir, selon les dates et la thématique de l'ouvrage, de Pierre Martin de La Martinière (1634-1676 ? 1690 ?), physicien, chirurgien et voyageur né à Rouen. La Martinière a traité de la peste dans plusieurs de ses ouvrages notamment son Opérateur ingénu enseignant les vérités etc, avec un discours sur la maladie pestilente de l'année 1668. Dans cet ouvrage il y dénonce les charlatans parmi les opérateurs (médecins et chirurgiens). Il y propose des remèdes contre la peste. Bel exemplaire de cet ouvrage rare conservé dans sa première reliure
