Dawn Jack in Collaboration with Elizabeth staples
All Women are Beautiful - Original Typescript manuscript on Hollywood Makeup Artistry By Head of Make-up at MGM
Los Angeles 1941. Original Manuscript . Typed Card Wrappers. Very Good. 158 Pp. Original Manuscript For A Book On Women And Women's Makeup By Jack Dawn Director Of Makeup M-G-M Studios. Dawn Was One Of Hollywood's Most Important Makeup Artists And Directors Particularly Well Known For Work On The Wizard Of Oz: "Perhaps Most Miraculous Was The Role Played By Jack Dawn And The Mgm Makeup Department. It Was Dawn's Task To Take Three Nonhumans-A Scarecrow A Tin Man And A Lion-And Bring Them To Life. He Had To Give Them Personalities And Human Characteristics That Would Evoke An Humanity Amidst The Costumes Dictated By Their Roles. This Was Done Convincingly Resulting In Three Of The Most Elaborate Makeup/Costume Designs To Date In Hollywood: The Costumes Did Pose Certain Critical Problems For Production However. Bert Lahr's Costume For The Cowardly Lion For Instance Weighed Nearly 100 Pounds. This Coupled With The Intense Heat Caused By The Lighting Needed To Shoot Made Filming For Long Durations Impossible And The Film Had To Be Shot In Segments With A Day's Shooting Often Ending Before A Scene Was Complete. As A Result Before The Next Day's Shooting Could Begin Makeup Had To Be Meticulously Matched And Perfectly Recreated To Retain Consistency. Daily Rushes Were Used To Aid This Process. While This Precision Slowed Down The Production The Commitment To Perfection Became A Trademark Of Mgm. For Their Efforts Both Jack Dawn And Cedric Gibbons Received Academy Award Nominations. This Recognition While Falling On Individuals Was No Less A Tribute To The System. It Was A Recognition Of The Elaborate Collaborative Nature Of Hollywood Filmmaking." Dann Had Credits For 216 Movies Including Such Classics As Ninotchka A Christmas Carol The Asphalt Jungle Adam's Rib Lady In The Lake The Postman Always Rings Twice Anchors Aweigh The Picture Of Dorian Gray Kismet The Canterville Ghost Random Harvest Tortilla Flat Strike Up The Band The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn Blockheads Etc. A Clean Copy Nicely Inscribed To A Friend By The Collaborator Elizabeth Staples And Dated 1941 And With Hand Corrections/ Changes By Staples. This Book Was Apparently Never Published Possibly Because Its Directness And Detail Would Have Harmed The Business Of Mgm By Helping Competitors And Removing Some Of The Mystique Of The Film Process And Possibly Too Because This Elitist And Competitive View Of Beauty Might Have Offended Some Of The Movie-Going Public.

unknown

de Poncins Gontran. In collaboration with Lewis Galantiere. Illustrated by the author
Kabloona.
New York: Reynal Hitchcock Inc 1941. First limited edition of French adventurer Gontran de Poncins' classic account of his solo unsupported journey in the Canadian Arctic. Octavo bound in three quarters morocco over cloth covered boards with gilt titles and tooling to the spine. One on only 550 copies this is number 81. Boldly signed by the author on the front free endpaper "Before I disappear for good!.I remain your friend 'Eskimo Miki' de Poncins." With the original Publisher's Note laid in which explains "The Vicomte Gontran de Poncins author of KABLOONA called out of the Arctic to join the colors of his country disappeared in the debacle of the French Republic following the fall of Paris. It has therefore been impossible to obtain his signature for this limited edition." Poncins did in fact survive and this is one of the scarce copies that he signed. Written in collaboration with Lewis Galantiere Gontran de Poncins' Kabloona recounts the French aristocrat's solo unsupported journey in the Canadian Arctic where he lived with the Inuit for nearly 15 months between 1938 and 1939. Bored with the business world curiosity drew de Poncins to exotic areas throughout the world; his unique technique in relaying his observations of the cultures he discovered was not scientific but provided stylized personal points of view and descriptions. Initially describing the Inuit way of life as primitive and inferior de Poncins soon experienced a deep spiritual awakening after undergoing weeks of hardship in the Arctic and became so well-adapted to the lifestyle he was essentially adopted by the Inuit. Reynal, Hitchcock, Inc hardcover
