The Princess Radziwill with the collaboration of Grace Adele Catherwood
Child of Pity: The Little Prince Rides Away
New York: Sears Publishing Company Inc. Very Good. c.1930. First Edition. Hardcover. no dust jacket solid square book minor wear at extremities light spotting to top edge. A fanciful historical novel about the last days of Tsar Nicholas II and his family told as the story of the Tsarevich Alexei the hemophiliac youngest child and only son of Nicholas and Alexandra. The author 1858-1941 was a Russian-born Countess who became a Princess when she married the Polish-Lithuanian Prince Wilhelm Radziwill in 1873. Do the math: she was 15. She became a prominent if somewhat scandal-plagued figure at the Imperial courts in Germany and Russia in the late 19th and early 20th century and is said to have loved the luxury social life gossip and intrigue of the courts I mean what's not to love. But she was no mere hedonist: she was also gathering information from her environment which she then used as fodder for the couple of dozen books she eventually wrote about European royalty and the Russian court. She began her writing career in the 1880s intially under a male pseudonym and over the years was involved in more scandals and affairs than you can shake a stick at or that I can adequately summarize here including a 16-month stint in jail for forgery. Post-Russian Revolution she really went to town as a posthumous chronicler of the Romanoffs; however she disclaimed "Child of Pity" issuing a statement at the time of its publication that "the contract she signed gave the publishers the right as The New York Times reported to edit the manuscript and to have it rewritten or rearranged at their discretion and that not one line of the boo as it was published was written by her." The contract did however also give the publishers the right to attribute its authorship to her if they so chose and they figured that she'd provided all the raw material. By the way spoiler alert!: if you were thinking that the "rides away" title is meant to suggest that Alexei somehow escaped the Bolshevik firing squad as his sister Anastasia was long said to have done 'tain't so. It was rather a metaphor for his death which takes place in the final paragraph of the book. Very scarce . Sears Publishing Company, Inc. hardcover
