<meta charset="utf-8"><span data-mce-fragment="1">Léon Bonvin ne connut pas la même notoriété que son demi-frère, François (1817–1887), qui était un peintre réaliste estimé au</span><span class="caps" data-mce-fragment="1">XIX</span><sup class="typo_exposants" data-mce-fragment="1">e</sup><span data-mce-fragment="1"><span data-mce-fragment="1">siècle. Sur sa vie, de rares sources et témoignages nous sont parvenus. La plupart furent écrits juste après sa mort précoce – et souvent en réaction à celle-ci – avant que la mémoire de sa carrière et de son œuvre ne s’efface. Forcé de consacrer ses journées au travail dans l’auberge familiale située à Vaugirard, Léon Bonvin peignit ses aquarelles loin du regard du milieu artistique et culturel parisien.<meta charset="utf-8"></span></span><p>Il puisa son inspiration dans son environnement immédiat: bouquets de fleurs champêtres simplement disposés dans un verre, natures mortes de cuisine, vues de la plaine encore rurale et ouvrière de Vaugirard. La sincérité avec laquelle il représenta la réalité de son quotidien conduisit à un art d’une poésie singulière. Ces œuvres intimes et touchantes de vérité constituent sans nul doute une grande découverte pour le public de la Fondation Custodia.</p><p>Si le catalogue recherche l’exhaustivité, un choix de près de soixante-dix œuvres de Léon Bonvin a été fait pour l’exposition. Près de la moitié de cette sélection est issue de l’important fonds du Walters Art Museum de Baltimore, constitué du vivant de l’artiste par le collectionneur américain William Walters (1820–1894). Nombre d’autres œuvres ont fait aussi le voyage depuis les États-Unis où Léon Bonvin reste très apprécié. Plus proches de nous et des six feuilles de Bonvin conservées à la Fondation Custodia, le musée d’Orsay possède également un important ensemble de treize dessins de l’artiste.
