WEST TO THE SETTING SUN.
Macmillan Company of Canada Toronto 1944 reprint. 362 pp 8vo 8 5/8" H hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers b&w frontispiece. Concludes with Notes and Bibliography. ".an exciting action story of that dramatic period in North American history when the British and French vied with each other and with the native Indians for control of this rich land; a struggle that culminated in the American Revolutionary War which raged up and down the beautiful Mohawk valley for several years and culminated in the defeat of the British by the re bels and the departure of the decimated Indians westward. It is the story of Joseph Brant Mohawk chief who led the People of the Longhouse the Six Nations' Indians through fateful years of triumph and disaster when excitement ran high a n d d a n g er lurked round every bend of trail or river. Realizing that to survive the Indians must have gunpowder Joseph bargained with the white men and when the Indians decided to fight with the British gunpowder was the deciding factor . Ho w b ri ll ia nt was Joseph's leadership and how nearly the Indians came to winning the war for the British is now told for the first time in this dramatic and colourful novel. The battle strategy which Brant devised would if followed by t he Bri ti sh h ave wo n t he war for them. 170 years later it has formed the basis of British commando tactics. It is also the story of Joseph's love for Catherine Crogan the beautiful half-breed Indian whose brilliant spying for the British won this tr ibu te f rom Colo nel Butler: 'How else could two hundred Rangers and a handful of Indians have lived off the enemy and kept a frontier in flames for four years'."
