‎The Choice Works of THOMAS HOOD in Four Volumes with the bookplates of Baltimore philanthropist Frank Frick‎

Hardcover. 4 vols pages; Four volume set bound in contemporary brown half calf over marbled boards marbled endpapers and edges of the text blocks marbled to match. Considerable wear to all volumes labels missing and with heavy rubbing to the spines and corners including small areas of loss. The appeal of this set to historians and collectors stems derives from its provenance in the rich social history of Baltimore Maryland not from its worn appearance. Each volume is inscribed on its title page by Baltimore philanthropist and arts patron Frank Frick 1828-1910 to his mother Mary Frick wife of the Hon. William Frick of Baltimore. Mary Frick was the daughter of a well-known mayor of Baltimore James Sloan. She married William Frick who featured prominantly in Baltimore history. After serving as a volunteer in the War of 1812 the Hon. William Frick 1790-1855 was admitted to the Baltimore bar in 1813; served as Presidential Elector for Andrew Jackson in 1833; Senator for Baltimore City from 1841-46; and later occupied various judicial posts culminating in First Judge Superior Court of Baltimore City 1851- until his death in 1855. Young Frank Frick was just starting out in business when he gave this set to his mother for Christmas 1852. Frick became a partner in the firm of C. Morton Stewart & Company in 1868 which engaged in the sugar and coffee trade with the West Indies and South America and owned its own fleet of Baltimore clippers. Stewart & Co. were the Baltimore correspondents of Baring Brothers in London providing additional revenue from banking activities. Frank Frick became steward of this set after his mother's death and added his later-in-life engraved bookplate to the front free endpaper of each volume. This handsome bookplate reveals Frick's enduring passion for music. A good portion of his significant wealth was devoted to various musical causes and institutions in Baltimore. As a young man Frick was an active member of the Philharmonic Society and later in life he always found time for music and the fine arts. The Allston Association later the Wednesday Club which was formed for the cultivation of art and the higher class of music was organized and managed by Mr. Frick. For many years amateur musical and dramatic performances of great merit were given by the members. The Lyric Theatre on Mount Royal avenue formerly known as the Music Hall was another of Mr. Frick's creations in 1894. Frick had been an active member of the Board of Trade of Baltimore serving as its president from 1887 until 1894 when he retired to devote his time to philanthropy and collecting his substantial collection of engravings etchings and rare prints. It would be interesting to know who etched his own charismatic but unsigned bookplate. Frick had an earlier less ornate bookplate comprising "Frank Frick" engraved in cursive letters within a decorative oval on blue paper see the "Frank D. Anthony Book Plate Collection; Box 33 Folder 228 Plate # 7646. Illinois Digital Archives. The contents of this set which Frick preserved for over half a century reminds contemporary collectors of the high regard of his contemporaries for Thomas Hood 1799-1845 son of a bookseller. Hood became famous as a humorist publishing verse in the London Magazine Punch and his own "Hood's Comic Almanac" but his lasting reputation centers on two late works which draw attention to the difficulties of poverty. The first of these was "The Song of the Shirt" which first appeared anonymously in the Christmas number of Punch 1843 and was quickly reprinted accross England and Europe Charles Dickens was an admirer. This poem is in the first volume of this set along with two other signature works -- "The Bridge of Sighs" and "The Dream of Eugene Aram the Murderer." This last poem has earned the devotion of two unlikely modern writers: George Orwell see his 1935 poem "A Happy Vicar I Might Have Been" and P. G. Wodehouse who makes reference to Hood's Eugene Aram in a surprising number of his own works. In Wodehouse's 1916 story "Jeeves Takes Charge" Bertie Wooster is depicted absorbed in his scattered reflections inspired by his having stolen his uncle's manuscript memoir and the worrisome matter of having to find a hiding place: �I remember as a kid having to learn by heart a poem about a bird by the name of Eugene Aram who had the deuce of a job in this respect. All I can recall of the actual poetry is the bit that goes: 'Tum-tum tum-tum tum-tumty-tum I slew him tum-tum tum!' But I recollect that the poor blighter spent much of his valuable time dumping the corpse into ponds and burying it and what not only to have it pop out at him again. It was about an hour after I had shoved the parcel into the drawer when I realized that I had let myself in for just the same sort of thing ." I trust it is not necessary to point out that the phrase "I slew him" does not appear anywhere in Thomas Hood's otherwise memorable text which still deserves a more careful reading than Bertie Wooster appears to have given the once-famous poem.; Signed by Notable Personage Unrelated .
