Undated but the Advertisement To The Present Edition by the Editor is dated 1844 Originally published under the title of The Beauties Of Methodism in 1785 as per the British Library. vi 356 pages size 6 inches tall by 3.5 inches. ' Custom has made it necessary as an introduction to every book to give some account of the work and of the motives which induced the author or editor to publish it. In compliance with this rule we now address the Header. The contents of the following pages are evinced in the title page under the general head of the Beauties of Methodism selected from the -works of the Rev. John Wesley. It may be objected that in a work of a religious denomination there was no necessity for the introduction of politics. Mr. Wesley thought it requisite to address his followers on such subjects as well for their eternal as temporal welfare ; and we concur with him in opinion. Some political duties are enjoined in scripture on pain of Al mighty displeasure as obedience to the king and all that have authority under him. It therefore becomes a religious obligation to inculcate the necessity of these observances. To show the propriety of introducing physical axioms we need only observe that our Saviour extended his care to the bodies as well as the souls of mankind. Thus much for the particular parts of the subsequent work; we proceed now to speak more generally. The avidity with which the Beauties of Johnson were purchased occasioned selections from the works of most of our entertaining and elegant writers. It struck us that to mix the utile with the dulci might be beneficial to mankind. We looked round therefore for a writer who had not written so much to please as to serve his readers ; and such a one we found in Mr. Wesley. From him therefore we have extracted such passages as appeared to us best calculated to mend the heart to inform the judgment and occasionally to entertain the mind. How far we have acted judiciously in this business must be left to the determination of the candid Reader '.
