‎Exploration of the Colorado River of the West and Its Tributaries. Explored in 1869 1870 1871 and 1872 Under the Direction of the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution‎

‎Washington D.C.: Government Printing Office 1875. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good . 291pp. Quarto 29.5 cm Dark green cloth over boards. With map has a couple of minor fold splits and profile in an envelope at the rear. Both in near pristine condition. Light scratching and scuffing to the monograph's boards. Multiple small faint spots on backstrip. Darkening to p. 180 and the plate opposite. Text block cracked at p. 185 but book remains very sturdy. Complete. In better than very good condition. Powell's 1869 exploration was the first documented expedition to successfully navigate the perilous rapids of the Colorado River through the uncharted Grand Canyon. The expedition set off in 1869 with ten men and four boats under the direction of one-armed American explorer and Civil War veteran John Wesley Powell 1834-1902. After three months and nearly 1000 miles only five of the original party emerged from the depths of the canyon. Their historic journey mapped the last wild untamed river of the American West and named the last unknown regions of American geography. The Henry Mountains and the Dirty Devil River were until the Powell expedition the last nameless mountain range and river in the continental U.S. Carl Wheat writes in "Mapping the Transmississippi West 1850-1861" "As a narrative of adventure this book of 1875 is one of the most justly celebrated documents in the literature of exploration." In recognition of Powell's contributions to American exploration geology and ethnology he was appointed the first director of the U.S. Bureau of Ethnology of the Smithsonian Institution. He also served as director of the U.S. Geological Survey from 1881 to 1894. Powell Plateau a butte in Grand Canyon National Park is named after him as is Lake Powell. Howes P525. Farquhar 42a. ‎Fifteenth Annual Report of the Bureau of Ethnology to the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution 1893-94‎

‎Washington D.C.: Government Printing Office 1897. Good. Fifteenth Annual Report of the Bureau of Ethnology to the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution 1893-94 John Wesley Powell Government Printing Office Washington D.C. 1897 11.5 x 8.5 inches 366 pp.

Dark olive green boards with gilt stamped illustration of an Indigenous person in a feathered headdress to front gilt stamped lettering to spine and blind stamped border to front and back boards. Newspaper clipping from an 1898 paper named "The Sun" laid in to first free endpapers; the clipping is of an article titled "Gala Day at Columbia" and recounts the 144th commencement ceremonies. A paragraph about cash prizes awarded for best books published in archaeology ethnology and philology is framed and underlined in black ink. Spine and all corners bumped and rubbed; moderate scuffing to front and light scuffing to back board; front and top edge of text block and endpapers foxed. Good condition.

The United States Congress established the Bureau of Ethnology in 1879. Directed by surveyor geologist and U.S. Army Major John Wesley Powell the Bureau collected European-American knowledge about Indigenous nations motivated by the false "vanishing race" theory that Indigenous cultures and ways of life were naturally fading out of existence - though in reality they were being displaced by the westward expansion of the United States government and European-American settlers. The Bureau of Ethnology gathered thousands of photographs illustrations and other documentation of Indigenous cultures until it merged with other divisions of the Smithsonian Institute in the 1960s.

John Wesley Powell 1834-1902 was an American geologist U.S. Army soldier surveyor and explorer. He is most famous for his 1869 geographic expedition down the Green and Colorado Rivers which resulted in thorough cartographic and scientific documentation of the rivers and surrounding canyon country including the Grand Canyon. ‎cxxi366 pages with frontispiece 125 plates 49 figures and index. Quarto 11 1/2" x 8 1/4" bound in original publisher's olive green cloth with gilt lettering to spine and pictorial to cover. Papers by William Henry Holmes Stone implements of the Potomac-Chesapeake tidewater province page 3-152 plates I-CIII and frontispiece figures 1-29a; W J McGeen The Siouxan Indians: A preliminary sketch pages 153-204; James Owen Dorsey Siouxan sociology: A posthumous paper pages 205-244 and figures 30-38; Jesse Walter Fewkes Tusayan katcinas pages 245-313 plates CIV-CXI and figures 39-48; Cosmos Mindeleff The repair of Casa Grande ruin Arizona in 1891 pages 315-349 and plates CXII-CXXV. Edited by J W Powell. List of Publications of the Bureau of American Ethnology pgs 5-6 From the library of David H Snow. First edition.

Although classified by most conventional texts John Wesley Powell always maintained that he was not an adventure or an explorer. He considered himself a scientist motivated by a desire for knowledge and to further the progress of human kind. However Powell did live a busy and active life as a military leader the first navigator of the Colorado River and director of the United States Geological Survey. His accounts from navigating the Colorado River earned him early fame. Due to his compassion toward Native Americans he was elevated to director of the Smithsonian Institution's Bureau of Ethnology in which he continued until his death. His work on the Irrigation Survey for the western United States although never fully realized lead to the establishment of river gauging stations and preliminary work toward storage and utilization of river water for irrigation and prevention of floods and overflows.

In 1979 the highway salvage program of the Laboratory of Anthropology expanded beyond highway salvage projects. Under the direction of David H. Snow it was reorganized as the Research Section of the Laboratory of Anthropology. The change guaranteed that the program had a dynamic role in the active profession of archaeology that it continued to add to the Lab's research collections and that publications on projects continued to be produced. By 1984 the Research Section staff had outgrown its location in the Laboratory of Anthropology. Along with the Laboratory's archaeological research collection of almost ten million artifacts the Research Section moved to new offices in downtown Santa Fe.

Condition:

David Snow's signature on front end paper light rubbing to back hinge corners bumped else a very good.
