‎Women in Sciences Education‎

‎Original Photograph of Female Students Studying Electricity 1905‎

‎Women's Education. Photograph: High School Girls Conducting Electricity Experiments 1905. Large sepia press photo. 8.5" x 7". Handwritten note on verso states the photograph is for an article on public schools. Creasing on upper right and left hand corners tiny tears and nicks along the top and bottom of the image. Very good condition overall. Approximately eighteen girls conducting experiments on electricity using conducting boxes at an unspecified public high school in New York. They sit on tall stools around long tables wearing expressions that vary from concentration to vexation. High school gave girls the opportunity to advance beyond a rudimentary education and become versed in subjects such as history their rights as citizens and advanced science. The US was the first nation to provide the general public with secondary education and in 1900 there were 6000 public schools. Only a fraction of those however were open to women. These girls were part of the first generation taught science a right denied to their mothers and grandmothers. unknown books‎

First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 2 vols. in one. 8vo. I: 10 cxix 7 208 pp. 1 f. "Errata" for Tom. 1. II: 2 231 pp. 1 f. "Addition" 1 f. "Errata" for Tom 1 sic. First title page with unobtrusive paper defect on lower margin not affecting text; this copy is lacking half-title and Errata leaf for Tom. 2. Very attractive 19th-century French red glazed boards red morocco spine lettered in gilt directly two insignificant worm-holes on lower hinge leading nowhere; trifle wear to binding extremities. Completely unsophisticated. First printing of "Telliamed" in every way a remarkable book. Disguised as an Oriental fantasy it contains perhaps the earliest appearance of one of the most important of all evolution speculations namely the so-called ultra-neptunian theory: that the entire Earth was and is a marine deposit and that all life on land originated from creatures of the sea. Maillet hypothesized that the earth was once entirely covered with water and that the water gradually evaporated into space causing land masses to appear. Maillet also created an ingenious methodology to calculate the age of the Earth: he concluded that the Earth is 2 billion years old evolutionists today consider this figure to be more like 4.5 billion. It is known that Buffon Lamark Cuvier and Darwin read this book and that they were very much influenced by Maillet's unorthodox heretical views. Well aware that such an immense figure would incur the wrath of the Church de Maillet presented his conclusions in the guise of a dialogue between a French missionary and an Eastern mystic named Telliamed i.e. de Maillet spelled backwards. The manuscript remained unpublished until a decade after Maillet's death. In order to present his radical conclusions in the guise of an Oriental tale Maillet interspersed monsters and mythological creatures into his text. Overtly anti-Christian "Telliamed" dismisses the Flood of the Old Testament as a fable because rainfall that lasted forty days would have been insignificant to submerge entire mountains. Maillet asserted that the Earth's history could not be read from the Bible but through the rocks themselves. ¶ With uncanny prescience Maillet describes how species have overlapping physical characteristics that suggested a common life origin namely the sea. Through a Oriental mystic we are told that: "The little Wings had under their Belly and which like their Fins helped them to walk in the Sea became Feet and served them to walk on Land." ¶ REFERENCES: Caillet No. 7009. ‎19th c. Women Education Women in Sciences‎

‎Female Student at Teaching College in 1854 writes on astronomical observations and how she is looking forward to " the eclipse through the telescope.‎

‎19th c. Women's Education Autograph Letter Signed from female student dated May 25 1854. 4 pages folded from single sheet. 6.5 x 5.25 in. Written by student Eloise Hemstreet to her parents. She writes about her school which she feel is one of "the best of schools and one of the edens of the earth." She writes on her interest in astronomical observations and how she is looking forward to looking "at the eclipse through the telescope." She mentions "the college" and talks about the health and wellness of both male and female classmates at the Institution. Additionally she mentions that the College was getting a new roof. Research indicates Eloise was born in 1833 making her 21 at the time of this letter. She became a teacher thus was likely studying for the education profession as she wrote this letter. In the latter half of the 19th century women in America had growing access to higher education especially in the professional training to become teachers. For many women working as a teacher was the key to independence-both financial and socially. Hemstreet went on to teach in New York and Wisconsin where in 1861 she made $16 for teaching a summer session. Toning around bottom left edge and corner of page 1. Original fold lines with small 1/2 inch tear along outer edge of horizontal fold line on all pages. Very small tear 1/2 cm. along top edge of pages. Else in very good condition. A unique and personal piece of early Female Education history. unknown books‎

‎Sedm pražských dnů 21.-27. serpen 1968: dokumentace Seven Days in Prague: August 21-27 1968: a documentation‎

‎Prague: Historický ústav ČSAV v Praze 1968. Octavo 20.4 × 15 cm. Original printed black wrappers over blind white wraps; 6 IV 1 35 37-54 1 blank 55-494 pp and fifty-six unnumbered pages with photographic reproductions interspersed. Good; wrappers worn and creased; binding shaken but intact. First edition of this documentation in text and image of the 1968 Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia which put a sudden end to the Prague Spring a period of political and cultural liberalization in the mid-1960s. The arrival of Russian troops on tanks on August 21 1968 heralded the onset of the so-called Normalization period presided over by Gustáv Husák and ended the political and cultural liberalization in the mid to late 1960s. Nearly 150 Czech citizens were killed during the invasion and many more wounded during protests. The response of the public was one of non-violent but active resistance: soldiers were misdirected street signs were removed food and water were denied the occupants and anti-Soviet posters and slogans appeared overnight.

This compilation was published semi-legally and at considerable risk only a month after the invasion. To defend themselves against repercussions the publishers used the printed label "Studijní materiál - pouze pro vnitřní potřebu" "Study materials - only for internal use". Aside from detailed timelines of the memorable days eyewitness accounts newspaper articles including translations from foreign press and transcriptions of official Soviet and Czechoslovak documents the volume contains dozens of photographs taken during the invasion. They show the movement of planes and tanks the faces of Czech politicians protests and demonstrations as well as the posters and handbills circulated in the immediate aftermath including many anti-Soviet banners and graffiti. The book was distributed in samizdat copies and quickly forwarded abroad: an English version edited by Robert Littell was published in 1969 with the title The Czech Black Book. paperback books‎
