SPEER JAMES H
Fundamentals Of Tree Ring Research
University of Arizona Press Tucson. Softcover. Brand new book. Tree-ring dating dendrochronology is a method of scientific dating based on the analysis of tree-ring growth patterns. As author James Speer notes trees are remarkable bioindicators. Although there are other scientific means of dating climatic and environmental events dendrochronology provides the most reliable of all paleorecords. Dendrochronology can be applied to very old trees to provide long-term records of past temperature rainfall fire insect outbreaks landslides hurricanes and ice stormsto name only a few events. This comprehensive text addresses all of the subjects that a reader who is new to the field will need to know and will be a welcome reference for practitioners at all levels. It includes a history of the discipline biological and ecological background principles of the field basic scientific information on the structure and growth of trees the complete range of dendrochronology methods and a full description of each of the relevant subdisciplines. Individual chapters address the composition of wood methods of field and laboratory study dendroarchaeology dendroclimatology dendroecology dendrogeomorphology and dendrochemistry. The book also provides thorough introductions to common computer programs and methods of statistical analysis. In the final chapter the author describes "frontiers in dendrochronology" with an eye toward future directions in the field. He concludes with several useful appendixes including a listing of tree and shrub species that have been used successfully by dendrochronologists. Throughout photographs and illustrations visually represent the state of knowledge in the field. "Fundamentals of Tree-Ring Research is a convenient single source covering techniques and scientific uses of tree rings to which beginning and experienced dendrochronologists alike can turn for information about tree rings." International Forestry Review "An excellent choice for instructors seeking to introduce students to the science and excitement of dendrochronology." Professional Geographer 'A much-needed volume that will become a standard reference for many years to come."Quarterly Review of Biology University of Arizona Press, Tucson paperback

HALL BONNIE; EDITED BY JAMES D. HALL WITH A FOREWORD BY ROBERT MICHAEL PYLE
Ever Blooming: The Art Of Bonnie Hall
Oregon State University Press Corvallis: 2005. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. After a long and accomplished career in scientific illustration Bonnie Hall turned with wonder and determination to the art of screenprinting. Resolved to "share the privileged close scrutiny of nature" that she had enjoyed Hall created her first screenprint in 1992 while undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer. Over the next 12 years she created screenprints of Pacific Northwest wildflowers ferns and butterflies-natural history portraits in simple sharp-edged planes of brilliant color. Inspired by old botanical prints and motivated by a desire to draw attention to "the overlooked undervalued or threatened wild things native to our Pacific Northwest landscape" Hall produced scientifically accurate prints that revealed the personality life stages and the very essence of her subjects-what a fellow artist aptly called the "gesture" of each plant. Ever Blooming collects the 33 large serigraphs and five smaller ferns that Hall created in the last years of her life along with the artist's own text describing each plant and butterfly. Her narratives are rich in detail and informed by thorough study into plant distribution life histories use by Native Americans taxonomic discoveries and conservation issues. Taken as a whole the work is a sparkling confluence of science and art. For botanists wildflower enthusiasts gardeners and artists as well as anyone who loves the Pacific Northwest wilderness Ever Blooming offers a singular glimpse of the natural world as seen through the eyes of a gifted and inspired artist. 9 9 inches full color 104 pages. "Bonnie Hall and her exquisite art created one of the loveliest gardens ever grown of our region's floral treasures. From violets to shooting stars fritillarias to ferns and a bursting bouquet of irises Bonnie captured the color form and personality of Northwest flowers with the simplicity of Henry Evans and the exuberance of a Dutch Master's still life. As a beautiful bonus splendid portraits of five special Northwest butterflies linger among the wildflowers they love. Bonnie Hall's wildflowers are her great gift to us all-long may they bloom!" -Robert Michael Pyle Oregon State University Press, Corvallis: 2005 hardcover

HODGSON WENDY C
Food Plants Of The Sonoran Desert
University of Arizona Press Tucson: 2015. Softcover. Brand new book. Winner of the Society for Economic Botany's Mary W. Klinger Book Award. The seemingly inhospitable Sonoran Desert has provided sustenance to indigenous peoples for centuries. Although it is to all appearances a land bereft of useful plants fully one-fifth of the desert's flora are edible. This volume presents information on nearly 540 edible plants used by people of more than fifty traditional cultures of the Sonoran Desert and peripheral areas. Drawing on thirty years of research Wendy C. Hodgson has synthesized the widely scattered literature and added her own experiences to create an exhaustive catalog of desert plants and their many and varied uses. Food Plants of the Sonoran Desert includes not only plants such as gourds and legumes but also unexpected food sources such as palms lilies and cattails all of which provided nutrition to desert peoples. Each species entry lists recorded names and describes indigenous uses which often include nonfood therapeutic and commodity applications. The agave for example is cited for its use as food and for alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages syrup fiber cordage clothing sandals nets blankets lances fire hearths musical instruments hedgerows soap and medicine and for ceremonial purposes. The agave entry includes information on harvesting roasting and consumptionand on distinguishing between edible and inedible varieties. No other source provides such a vast amount of information on traditional plant uses for this region. Accessible to general readers this book is an invaluable compendium for anyone interested in the desert's hidden bounty. "Finally! A book that all desert food lovers can enjoy . . . Decidedly the best ethnobotanical resource for the desert Southwest in print . . . The richness and diversity of the desert is wonderful and limitless and nowhere with the exception of the desert itself is it more apparent than in this book."Seedhead News "Blood sweat tears and ethnobotanical passion for plants are what Wendy C. Hodgson's extensively researched book represents. . . . Packed with fascinating stories that highlight plant-to-people connections."Plant Systematics and Evolution "An excellent study of interest to archaeologists ethnographers or ethnobotanists working in the American Southwest and northwestern Mexico and to anyone else interested in the peoples who gathered the desert."Society for American Archaeology "An excellent primer for budding Sonoran ethnobotanists."Edible Phoenix University of Arizona Press, Tucson: 2015 hardcover

Plant Life Of A Desert Archipelago: Flora Of The Sonoran Islands In The Gulf Of California
University of Arizona Press Tucson: 2016. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. The desert islands of the Gulf of California are among the world's best-preserved archipelagos. The diverse and unique flora from the cardon forests of Cholludo to the agave-dominated slopes of San Esteban remain much as they were centuries ago when the Comcaac Seri people were the only human presence in the region. Almost 400 plant species exist here with each island manifesting a unique composition of vegetation and flora. For thousands of years climatic and biological forces have sculpted a set of unparalleled desert worlds. Plant Life of a Desert Archipelago is the first in-depth coverage of the plants on islands in the Gulf of California found in between the coasts of Baja California and Sonora. The work is the culmination of decades of study by botanist Richard Felger and recent investigations by Benjamin Wilder in collaboration with Sr. Humberto Romero-Morales one of the most knowledgeable Seris concerning the region's flora. Their collective effort weaves together careful and accurate botanical science with the rich cultural and stunning physical setting of this island realm. The researchers surveyed collected and studied thousands of plantsseen here in meticulous illustrations and stunning color photographsproviding the most precise species accounts of the islands ever made. To access remote parts of the islands the authors worked directly with the Comcaac an indigenous community who have lived off marine and terrestrial life in this coastal desert region for centuries. Invaluable information regarding indigenous names and distributions are an intrinsic part of this work. The flora descriptions are extraordinarily detailed and painstakingly crafted for field biologists. Conservationists students and others who are interested in learning about the natural wealth of the Gulf of California desert regions or islands in general are sure to be captivated by this rich and fascinating volume. 8 1/2" x 11". Richard S. Felger has studied natural history in arid regions worldwide and is the founder and executive director of the Drylands Institute in Tucson Arizona. Benjamin T. Wilder is a desert ecologist and botanist. LUTHER KEM
Boundary Layer: Exploring The Genius Between Worlds
Oregon State University Press Corvallis: 2016. Softcover. Brand new book. In atmospheric science a boundary layer is the band of air nearest the ground. In the Pacific Northwest the boundary layer teems with lichens mosses ferns fungi and diminutive plants. It's an alternate overlooked universe whose denizens author Kem Luther calls the stegnon the terrestrial equivalent of oceanic plankton. In Boundary Layer Luther takes a voyage of discovery through the stegnon exploring the life forms that thrive there and introducing readers to the scientists who study them. With a keen ear for conversation and an eye for salient detail the author brings a host of characters to life people as unique and intriguing as the species inhabiting the stegnon. A pair of park employees on a windswept beach shows how the violent clash of sea and land creates a sandy home for some of the world's most endangered plants including the almost-extinct pink sand-verbena. An expert on mosses as ingenuous as the plants he loves leads the author up a mountain and into a sphagnum bog. A husband and wife team exiled by brutal repression in the wake of the Prague Spring introduce European plant sociology to North America. A scientist while revolutionizing the study of lichens hides himself hermitlike inside one of the largest park reserves in the American West. An exhilarating mix of natural history botanical exploration and philosophical speculation Boundary Layer guides readers in the end into the author's own landscape of metaphor. It will be welcomed by naturalists botanists outdoor adventurers and anyone who savors good storytelling. Luther translates into luminous prose what boundary regions have to say not only about the in-between places of nature but also about the conceptual borderlands that lie between species and ecosystems culture and nature science and the humanities. 6 9 36 black and white illustrations 240 pages. KEM LUTHER a naturalist and writer moved from a home on Ontario's Grand River to the southern tip of Vancouver Island in 2004. BISHOP ELLEN MORRIS
Living With Thunder: Exploring The Geologic Past Present And Future Of The Pacific Northwest
Oregon State University Press Corvallis: .2014. Softcover. Brand new book. The Pacific Northwest is a region defined by its geology as much as its rugged coastline drippy westside forests fertile farms and canyoned eastside grasslands. These landscapes have been forged by volcanoes crumpled by faults and sculpted by water and ice. But the Northwest's geologic DNA is rooted in volcanic activity. From the ancient lavas of Washington's Selkirks to the world-class flood-basalts that dominate the Columbia Basin to the restless peaks of the High Cascades the thunder of volcanic eruptions echoes through the ages. In Living with Thunder geologist and photographer Ellen Morris Bishop offers a fascinating and up-to-date geologic survey of the NorthwestWashington Oregon northern California and western Idaho. New discoveries include Smith Rock as part of Oregon's largest and most extinct volcano portraits of Mount Hood's 1793-1795 eruptions and new ideas about the origin of the Columbia River basalts and the course of the ancestral Columbia River. Intended as an introduction for the general reader and geological non-specialist Living with Thunder enlivens Northwest geological history by combining engaging science writing with the author's stunning color photographs. In addition color maps and time charts help guide the reader. The book presents evidence of changing ecosystems and ancient life as well as the Northwest's exceptional record of past climate changes and the implications for our future. Bishop also examines the confluence between scientific findings and Native American documentation of several major geologic events; the title of her book harks to the Klamath Indian recounting of Mount Mazama's cataclysmic eruption. An important work by a gifted scientist and storyteller Living with Thunder offers a key to understanding the Northwest's unique long-term volcanic heritage. 10 7. Full-Color Photographs. Maps. 160 pages. Ellen Morris Bishop is the author of four books including the award-winning In Search of Ancient Oregon. She holds a Ph.D. in geology from Oregon State University with a specialty in the oldest accreted terranes of eastern Oregon. When not teaching or writing she is often in the field camera in hand documenting the geographically rich region through her world-class photography. "One of the preeminent authorities of Northwest geology Ellen Morris Bishop encapsulates the geology of the Pacific Northwest for the interested layperson a daunting task" Marli Miller author of Roadside Geology of Oregon "Neat stuff. The Tropical Deciduous Forest Of Alamos: Biodiversity Of A Threatened Ecosystem In Mexico
University of Arizona Press Tucson: 2016. Softcover. Brand new book. Only a day's drive south of the U.S.-Mexico border a tropical deciduous forest opens up a world of exotic trees and birds that most people associate with tropical forests of more southerly latitudes. Like many such forests around the world this diverse ecosystem is highly threatened especially by large-scale agricultural interests that are razing it in order to plant grass for cattle. This book introduces the tropical deciduous forest of the Alamos region of Sonora describing its biodiversity and the current threats to its existence. The book's contributors present the most up-to-date scientific knowledge of this threatened ecosystem. They review the natural history and ecology of its flora and fauna and explore how native peoples use the forest's many resources. Included in the book's coverage is a comprehensive plant list for the Rio Cuchujaqui area that well illustrates the diversity of the forest. Other contributions examine tree species used by Mayo Indians and the numerous varieties of domesticated plants that have been developed over the centuries by the Mayos and other indigenous peoples. Also examined are the diversity and distribution of reptiles amphibians mammals and birds in the region. The Tropical Deciduous Forest of Alamos provides critical information about a globally important biome. It complements other studies of similar forests and allows a better understanding of a diverse but vanishing ecosystem. "This slender book contains an enormous amount of information about this little-known ecosystem. . . . For those who have no familiarity with Sonora's flora this is an excellent introduction. For those who have serious interests in the area it is an absolute necessity."Plant Science Bulletin University of Arizona Press, Tucson: 2016 paperback
