THE SANCTUARY OF HEMITHEA AT KASTABOS
Cambridge University Press. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1966. Hardcover. DJ is price-clipped. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. ; 23pp of photos 78 figures. "This is an account of the excavation of a Greek sanctuary in the south-west corner of the mainland of Asia Minor opposite Rhodes--once known as the Carian Chersonese. The excavations took place in 1959-1960. This is the first Greek temple of any size uncovered in that part of Asia Minor and the discovery of the site of Kastabos whose existence was known from book V of Diodorus' world history has entailed the re-siting of several ancient towns in the region. The sanctuary itself whose main buildings date from c. 300 B. C. was dedicated to the Goddess Hemithea. It adds to our knowledge of a special sort of Greek shrine which was popular in the early Hellenistic age and is a perfect instance of a religious gathering place designed for a short well attended festival. The excavations show that although it was an Ionic temple the style of the great contemporary temples in Ionia such as that at Ephesus has been modified and the design is somewhat similar in plan and proportion to that of the temple of Epidaurus. In particular the discovery of a decorative screen with little shrines round the temple area throws new light on Greek architectural complexes." ; 180 pages . Cambridge University Press hardcover

PLUTARCH
Charles Scribner's Sons. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1973. Hardcover. 0684133512 . Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. DJ is price-clipped. Minor bumping to one corner. ; More perhaps than any other single writer Plutarch has been responsible for transmitting to Europe the central historical and moral traditions of classical antiquity. His books have been a formative influence in western civilisation; they retain a direct appeal to which it is easy to respond. Mestrius Plutarchus ca. 46- 127 was a Greek historian biographer and essayist. Born in the small town of Chaeronea in the Greek region known as Boeotia probably during the reign of the Roman Emperor Claudius Plutarch travelled widely in the Mediterranean world including twice to Rome. Due to his parents' wealth after 67 Plutarchus was able to study philosophy rhetoric and mathematics at the Academy of Athens. He had a number of influential friends including Soscius Senecio and Fundanus both important Senators to whom some of his later writings were dedicated. He lived most of his life at Chaeronea and was initiated into the mysteries of the Greek god Apollo. However his duties as the senior of the two priests of Apollo at the Oracle of Delphi where he was responsible for interpreting the auguries of the Pythia or priestess/oracle apparently occupied little of his time - he led an active social and civic life and produced an incredible body of writing much of which is still extant. ; Classical Life and Letters; 183 pages . FROM GOOD GODDESS TO VESTAL VIRGINS Sex and Category in Roman Religion
Routledge. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1998. Hardcover. 0415132339 . Very minor edgewear to top corners of DJ else Fine. ; 0.79 x 8.43 x 5.67 Inches; 207 pages; The role of women in Roman culture and society was a paradoxical one. They enjoyed social material and financial independence yet they were denied basic constitutional rights. Although Roman history is not short of powerful female figures such as Agrippina and Livia their power stemmed from their associations with great men and was not officially recognized. Ariadne Staples' book examines how women in Rome were perceived both by themselves and by men through women's participation in Roman religion as Roman religious ritual provided the single public arena where women played a significant formal role. From Good Goddess to Vestal Virgins argues that the ritual roles played out by women were vital in defining them sexually and that these sexually defined categories spilled over into other aspects of Roman culture including political activity. Staples provides an arresting and original analysis of the role of women in Roman society which challenges traditionally held views and provokes further questions. . Routledge hardcover

This authoritative new work attempts to bridge the gap that usually divides Greek religion from Greek history setting it firmly in the thick of contemporary events and politics. CONSTANTINE AND THE BISHOPS The Politics of Intolerance
The Johns Hopkins University Press. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 2000. Hardcover. 0801862183 . Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. Light Bumping to bottom of spine. ; Ancient Society and History; 1.68 x 8.76 x 8.78 Inches; 632 pages; Historians who viewed imperial Rome in terms of a conflict between pagans and Christians have often regarded the emperor Constantine's conversion as the triumph of Christianity over paganism. But in Constantine and the Bishops historian H. A. Drake offers a fresh and more nuanced understanding of Constantine's rule and especially of his relations with Christians. Constantine Drake suggests was looking not only for a god in whom to believe but also a policy he could adopt. Uncovering the political motivations behind Constantine's policies Drake shows how those policies were constructed to ensure the stability of the empire and fulfill Constantine's imperial duty in securing the favor of heaven. Despite the emperor's conversion to Christianity Drake concludes Rome remained a world filled with gods and with men seeking to depose rivals from power. A book for students and scholars of ancient history and religion Constantine and the Bishops shows how Christian belief motivated and gave shape to imperial rule. . PHRYGIAN ROCK-CUT SHRINES Structure Function and Cult Practice
Brill Academic Publishers. Fine with no dust jacket. 2006. Hardcover. 9004152423 . Unwrapped in plastic. ; Culture and History of the Ancient Near East; 11.25 x 1 x 8.5 Inches; 438 pages; This volume explores the Iron Age Phrygian rock-cut monuments in Anatolia and defines their role in religion. Among other features this book questions the traditional view of the Mother goddess Kybele being the only Phrygian deity. A detailed analysis based on the monuments provides new interpretations and aspects of Phrygian religion: the Mother goddess was not alone but rather accompanied by a Superior male god. For the first time all known Phrygian rock-cut monuments are brought together in the useful corpus with plenty of illustrations. It is a unique and significant contribution to the study of Phrygian religion and spatial conceptualization and is useful both for those interested in Anatolian culture and archaeology but also in fields such as classical religion and archaeology. . Small piece missing 1/4" from middle of spine from cut else NF. ; The Context of Early Christianity; 0.86 x 8.7 x 5.88 Inches; 160 pages; <P>This volume explores the fascinating phenomenon of noble death through pagan Jewish and Christian sources. Today's society is uncomfortable with death and willingly submitting to a violent and ostentatious death in public is seen as particularly shocking and unusual. Yet classical sources give a different view with public self-sacrifice often being applauded. The Romans admired a heroic end in the battlefield or the arena suicide in the tradition of Socrates was something laudable and Christians and Jews alike faithfully commemorated their heroes who died during religious persecutions. The cross-cultural approach and wide chronological range of this study make it valuable for those interested in ancient history religion and literature.</P> . Routledge hardcover

Dumezil Georges Tr. Alf Hiltebeitel
THE DESTINY OF A KING
University of Chicago Press. Near Fine with no dust jacket. 1973. Hardcover. 0226169758 . The preeminent scholar of comparative studies of Indo-European society Georges Dumzil theorized that ancient and prehistoric Indo-European culture and literature revolved around three major functions: sovereignty force and fertility. This work treats these functions as they are articulated through "first king" legends found in Indian Iranian and Celtic epics particularly the Mahabharata. Dumzil drawing on an extraordinarily broad range of Indo-European sources from Scandinavia to India and offering an original and provocative analytic method set a new agenda for studies in comparative oral literature historical linguistics comparative mythology and history of religions. The Destiny of a King examines one of the "little" epics within the Mahabharatathe legend of King Yayati a distant ancestor of the Pandavas the heroes of the larger epic. Dumzil compares Yayati's attributes and actions with those of the legendary Celtic king Eochaid Feidlech and also finds striking similarities in the stories surrounding the daughters of these two kings the Indian Madhavi and the Celtic Medb. When he compares these two traditions with the "first king" legends from Iran he finds such common themes as the apportionment of the earth and the "sin of the sovereign. " Contents: Yayati and his Sons; Yayati and his Daughter's Sons; Vasu Uparicara; Madhavi; Eochaid Feidlech His Daughers and his sons; Perspectives. ; 6.89 x 0.81 x 4.18 Inches; 170 pages . RABBINISME ET PAGANISME EN PALESTINE ROMAINE tude Historique Des Realia Talmudiques Ier-IVme Sicles
Brill Academic Publishers. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 2006. Hardcover. 9004146431 . New in plastic wrapping; Religions in the Graeco-Roman World 157; 9 x 2.5 x 5 Inches; 447 pages; This study deals essentially with the knowledge of the Palestinian Rabbis concerning paganism in the days of Mishna and Talmud. The Late Professor Saul Lieberman wrote that "Many isolated items on idolatry and idol worshippers are scattered all over rabbinic literature. It would require a large volume to treat this topic". This valuable and exhaustive study proves methodically that the Rabbis had deeper knowledge about Syrian Arabian Anatolian and Graeco-Roman Pagan cults than is commonly believed. Clear accessible and displaying considerable scholarship this work will undoubtedly provide an important challenge to both historians archaeologists and scholars of Rabbinic texts. Cette tude traite essentiellement du niveau de connaissances des Rabbins de Jude et de Galile concernant les cultes paens dans le sens le plus large du terme. Le Professeur Saul Lieberman affirmait : "Many isolated items on idolatry and idol worshippers are scattered all over rabbinic literature. . Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. ; Theseus is celebrated as the greatest of Athenian heroes. This work explores what he meant to the Athenians at the height of their city-state in the fifth century B. C. Assembling material that has been scattered in scholarly works Henry Walker examines the evidence for the development of themyth and cult of Theseus in the archaic age. He then looks to major works of classical literature in which Theseus figures exploring the contradictions between the archaic primitive side of his character and his refurbished image as the patron of democracy. His ambiguous nature as outsider flouting accepted standards of behavior while at the same time being a hero-king and a representative of higher ideals is analyzed through his representations in the work of Bacchylides Euripides and Sophocles. This is the only work of scholarship that examines the literary representation ofTheseus so thoroughly. It brings to life a literary character whose virtues flaws and contradictions belong in no less a degree to his creators the people of Athens. ; 0.85 x 9.32 x 6.32 Inches; 240 pages; Theseus is celebrated as the greatest of Athenian heroes. The first 20 pages are creased but with no loss to text else VG. Adhesives stain to front free-page. ; 256 pages; Julian is called by Christians "The Apostate" because they believe he converted from Christianity to Paganism. He himself as attested to in private letters between him and the Rhetorician Libanius had Christianity forced on him as a child by his cousin Constantius II who was a zealot Christian and would have not tolerated a pagan relative but Julian had never really accepted any religion until his reading of the Homeric poems some of the most important texts for the Greek religion. After this conversion to Hellenism he devoted his life to protecting and restoring the fame and security of this more ancient tradition as well as other religious traditions such as Judaism from Christian persecution. After gaining the purple Julian started a religious reformation of the state which in his intentions was to give back its lost strength to the Roman State. He supported the restoration of the old Roman faith based on polytheism. Julian reduced the influence of Christian bishops in public offices. The lands taken by the Church were to be returned to their original owners and the bishops lost the privilege to travel for free at expenses of the State. . Weidenfeld and Nicolson hardcover

THE ARGUMENTS OF THE EMPEROR JULIAN AGAINST THE CHRISTIANS Translated from the Greek Fragments Preserved by Cyril Bishop of Alexandria; to Which Are Added Extracts from the Other Works of Julian Relative to the Christians
Ares Publishers Inc. Fine with no dust jacket. 1980. Hardcover. 0890053014 . Exact Reprint of the Tetypeset original 1809 Chicago 1930 ARES PUBLISHERS INC. In his school edict Julian prohibits Christian teachers from using pagan scripts e. G. The Illias that formed the core of Roman education. This was an attempt to remove some of the power of Christian schools by alienating their students from Roman society not to mention a satirical attack at what Julian may have viewed as a hypocrisy: Christian schools teaching the Bible as the sole source of knowledge while simultaneously teaching classical pagan texts as well knowledge of which was needed for success in Roman society. In his tolerance edict of 362 Julian decreed the reopening of pagan temples the restitution of alienated temple properties and called back Christian bishops that were exiled by church edicts. The latter was an instance of tolerance of different religious views but may also have been an attempt by Julian to widen a schism between different Christian sects further weakening the Christian movement as a whole. ; 8.25 x 0.5 x 5.5 Inches; 119 pages .
