L'11 agosto del 1676, Isabella Tomasi di Lampedusa (suor Maria Crocifissa), dopo diciassette anni dal giorno in cui era entrata come novizia nel monastero benedettino di Palma di Montechiaro in provincia di Agrigento, scrisse la cosiddetta "Lettera del diavolo". Quel giorno, ultimato il pranzo, era sola nella sua cella e aveva appena intinto la penna d'oca nel calamaio per scrivere una relazione al padre confessore, quando alcune entità cominciarono a manifestarsi. Voci forti, aspre e distorte, cercarono di imporle cosa scrivere sul foglio ancora bianco. Ingaggiò una lotta contro quelli che ritenne essere diavoli, ma questi ebbero la meglio. Suor Crocifissa cominciò a scrivere parole senza apparente senso compiuto. Riempì il foglio di strani e incomprensibili caratteri e svenne. Fu ritrovata dalle altre monache a terra, priva di sensi, con il lato sinistro del viso imbrattato d'inchiostro e nella mano sinistra il foglio fitto di segni oscuri e impenetrabili. Tutto questo fu ufficialmente documentato dalla relazione scritta all'epoca della badessa. Ma cosa era successo veramente? Si trattava di semplici scarabocchi o di uno scritto di senso compiuto? E se sì, quale, e da parte di chi? Stefano Nocentini, con stile chiaro e dettagliato, scrive un saggio che si legge come un romanzo, con il quale esamina a fondo un mistero che affascina ancora oggi, analizzando in profondità la figura di suor Maria Crocifissa e dei suoi familiari, delineando un preciso quadro storico dell'epoca, e valutando le risposte che nelle varie epoche si sono date a questo enigma.
