‎Ex-library copy with usual stamps, call numbers and pocket. Former owner's name on ffep. Fraying to spine ends. Edgewear to extremities. ; Looks at the theology that may be present in the writings of Homer, Aeschylus and Sophocles. ; 365 pages; 1870. Natural theology may be contemplated from two different points of view, and so may be seen in two different aspects. We may look at in from the stand point of our own observation and reason in the light of Christianity; or we may consider it as it has been developed in the literature and history of heathen nations, and as it appeared in the eyes of those who were destitute of the Christian revelation. This volume is intended as a humble contribution to natural theology in both these forms.‎

‎ATHENIAN MYTHS AND INSTITUTIONS Words in Action‎

‎Pages slightly tanned. Else book is fine. DJ has minor shelfwear. ; 229pp. This book analyzes the relationships between Athenian myths and the institutions that informed them. In particular, it examines how myths encode thoughts on ritual, the code of the warrior, marriage, and politics. Combining traditional historical and literary criticism with the approaches of anthropologists, feminist critics, and cultural historians, the authors study specific examples of the epic and tragedy, as well as funeral orations and the Parthenon marbles, to illuminate the ways mythic media exploited the beliefs, concepts, and practices of fifth-century Athens, simultaneously exemplifying and shaping that culture. ; 229 pages‎

‎HIERA KALA Images of Animal Sacrifice in Archaic and Classical Greece‎

‎Book is fine. Hard creasing to top section of DJ. ; Hierà kalá presents a collection, analysis and interpretation of the representations of animal sacrifice from ancient Greece. The Archaic and Classical material is dealt with comprehensively. Later evidence is adduced more selectively, for the sake of comparison. All aspects of Greek sacrifice that are (or appear to be) represented in the iconographical material are treated in depth; interpretations are based on a combined study of the archaeological, the epigraphical and the literary data. Full catalogues of vase paintings and votive reliefs with depictions of sacrifice are included. A generous selection of these are illustrated in more than 200 figures. ; Religions in the Graeco-Roman World, 127; 9.7 X 6.5 X 1.3 inches; 374 pages‎

"Vernant's work ranges across the entire field of ancient Greek religion, philosophy, and literature and joins exacting philological scholarship to exciting and innovative theoretical paradigms. ‎INCONSISTENCIES IN GREEK AND ROMAN RELIGION I Ter Unus: Isis, Dionysus, Hermes - Three Studies in Henotheism‎

‎Scholars' bookplate to inner cover (Slater & Dunbabin). Some discoloration to wraps. 1 faint crease to wraps. ; Studies in Greek and Roman Religion, Vol 6; Vol. 1; 267 pages; This is the first of a two-volume collection of studies in inconsistencies in Greek and Roman religion. Their common aim is to argue for the historical relevance of various types of ambiguity and dissonance. The first volume focuses on the central paradoxes in ancient henotheism. The term "henotheism" - a modern formation after the stereotyped acclamation: #EIS O QEOS# ("one is the god"), common to early Christianity and contemporaneous paganism - denotes the specific devotion to one particular god without denying the existence of, or even cultic attention to, other gods. After its prime in the 1920s and 1930s the term fell into disuse. Nonetheless, the notion of henotheism represents one of the most remarkable and significant shifts in Graeco-Roman religion.‎

‎THE RELIGION OF SENATORS IN THE ROMAN EMPIRE Power and the Beyond‎

‎Very light shelfwear to DJ else Fine. ; 270 pages; This book examines the connection between political and religious power in the pagan Roman Empire through a study of senatorial religion. Presenting a new collection of historical, epigraphic, prosopographic and material evidence, it argues that as Augustus turned to religion to legitimize his powers, senators in turn also came to negotiate their own power, as well as that of the emperor, partly in religious terms. In Rome, the body of the senate and priesthoods helped to maintain the religious power of the senate; across the Empire senators defined their magisterial powers by following the model of emperors and by relying on the piety of sacrifice and benefactions. The ongoing participation and innovations of senators confirm the deep ability of imperial religion to engage the normative, symbolic and imaginative aspects of religious life among senators.‎

‎THESEUS AND ATHENS‎

‎Review of book tipped in. Dustjacket has faint creasing; 0.85 x 9.32 x 6.32 Inches; 240 pages; Theseus is celebrated as the greatest of Athenian heroes. This work explores what he meant to the Athenians at the height of their city-state in the fifth century B. C. Assembling material that has been scattered in scholarly works, Henry Walker examines the evidence for the development of themyth and cult of Theseus in the archaic age. He then looks to major works of classical literature in which Theseus figures, exploring the contradictions between the archaic, primitive side of his character and his refurbished image as the patron of democracy. His ambiguous nature as outsider, flouting accepted standards of behavior, while at the same time being a hero-king and a representative of higher ideals, is analyzed through his representations in the work of Bacchylides, Euripides, and Sophocles. This is the only work of scholarship that examines the literary representation ofTheseus so thoroughly. It brings to life a literary character whose virtues, flaws, and contradictions belong in no less a degree to his creators, the people of Athens.‎
