The text block head edge is stained red as issued though somewhat faded now. One of the limited edition of 1675 copies designed by Armitage. Signed and inscribed by Armitage on the back free end paper as follows: "For Frances - the north east west & south wind - bless her vitality! From her admiring friend. Merle Armitage 1973". The spine is very faded with the lettering on it being barely readable. The boards themselves show milder fading to the edges / margins and the lettering on the front is very good. The back end paper hinge is torn exposing the mull cloth. The front end paper hinge is starting with a small tear of 4 cm at the foot. Previous owner's name Frances L. Rich Wash. DC. 1944 written and blind stamped on the front free end paper. The text block itself is sound and the interior is very clean.; Signed by Author . E. Weyhe. hardcover

Signed by the author on the front free end paper as follows: "This book via Grace Denton Esser is for Frances Rich - one of the few people it was made for and one of the few who can understand its meaning - Warmly Merle Armitage December 1973". Grace Denton Esser was a contemporary of both Frances Rich and Merle Armitage working as a concert and theatrical manager. Francis Rich was a sculptor of some note from the midwest and the daughter of Irene Rich. Francis Rich's library seal is blind stamped on the front free end paper twice on the half title page and an 'offset stamping ghost' shows faintly on the title page. Otherwise the interior is very clean while the externals show mild shelf wear with scuff marks on the back board. Program from a lecture at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania on Jan. 12 1920 tipped on to front free endpaper. The lecture was "A Century of Grand Opera in Philadelphia" by John Curtis; it was illustrated by selections from eight operas with Curtis at the piano. This book was probably owned by John or Charles Jr. sons of Charles Fry 1850-1910 son of Joseph Reese Fry who wrote several opera libretti including that for Leonora composed by his brother William Henry Fry 1813-1864. The blank page following the front endpaper contains references in both pencil and pen to the pages on which the contributions of the Fry family to opera in Philadelphia are included; related pencil marks are on the related pages. In addition there are several clippings one from a 1927 newspaper about the American premier of Bellini's Norma in Philadelphia and three from excerpts of the diary of Joseph Sill published in 1927 newspapers in which opera-related events in Philadelphia in the 1840s are mentioned. Acquired with a book on American music bearing the bookplate of Charles Fry Sr. In Very Good Condition: spine is slightly darkened; ends of spine starting to fray; boards are lightly rubbed and soiled; shadows where clippings have been kept; otherwise clean and tight. <br/><br/> Porter & Coates hardcover
