n.p.: n.a. 1800. Painting on vellum 3� by 4� inches. Finely detailed depicting St. Francis of Assisi the Seraphic Doctor in great detail. St. Francis complete with stigmata is accompanied by a crucifix thorns a flagellum a book resting on a skull and a flowering plant supported by a decorative border. There is no signature that we can discern. The miniature is mounted on card with a hinged mat of brown cloth. Dimensions of the mat are 5� by 8 inches. A collection label is pasted beside the miniature not visible when the mat is closed " Collection of A. & C. Rub Hollywood California.". On the reverse in ink and an unknown hand is inscribed "A gift from Christian Rub Moving Picture Actor. 1935." Christian Rub whose wife's name was Amy was an Austrian actor with over 100 movies to his credit. His career spanned from silent films until 1952. He was the basis for the animation of Gepetto and also Gepetto's voice in Walt Disney's 'Pinocchio'. The vellum is lightly age-soiled but still bright and vibrant; the reverse of the mount has some old staining but overall this gives a very good appearance. n.a. hardcover

These quite earthly matters are interspersed with images from the Bible the frontispiece of Samuel Bears the Cross; Jonah; Infant Jesus; Simeon's Benediction Samuel & Eli. An excellent copy of this scarce miniature Marian Parry is an author poet illustrator and watercolor artist. Her books have been published by Knopf Simon & Schuster Greenwillow Heritage Press and Limited Editions Pharos Verlag Switzerland and Scholastic Books. She has had numerous one-person shows. Her work is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York the Houghton Library of Harvard University and the Smith College Rare Book Room. The main archive of her work is in the print collection of the Boston Public Library. Founder and senior instructor of the Watercolor Program for the Radcliffe Seminars at Harvard University she was a fellow in the Bunting Fellowship Program at Radcliffe. Reddish brown blind-stamped cloth with somewhat faded gilt lettering and decoration on the spine text block three inches tall the covers bring it just a touch over that size 191 pages. Extremities quite rubbed good hinges text block generally sound pages a little age-toned but clean a rough pencil sketch with Christ is Risen Hallelujah on the rear free endpaper no other markings. With wartimerationing and fabrics in short supply these fashionmannequins offered an excellent means to train youngwomen. Perhaps the most significant aspect of thesefashion dolls was that matching patterns could bepurchased from Simplicity in adult sizes as well somothers and daughters could sit side by side and sewthe same dress fit their respective mannequins orcrochet miniature hats. The Miniature Fashion SewingBook is exceedingly scarce and instructions called forthe same construction used in adult sewing: intricateshaping with darts and tucks side placket openingsfacings and lapels with no simplifying of instructionsfor young hands. Typically these kits were purchasedwith just the doll and possibly the dress form and acouple sewing kit pieces but more elaborate ones likethis would have extra trays for holding fashionscompleted extra supplies and lots of room foradditional patterns. This present kit includes severalfinished pieces by the young fashion designer --muslin blouse & apron cotton colour percale apron aslip a strapless red silk evening dress w/ black lacetrim a red striped sundress and the doll is dressed inan excellent miniature representation of a Women’sArmy Auxiliary Corps uniform. These MiniatureFashion Mannequins continued to be heavilymarketed into the early 1950s and paved the way forfuture adult fashion dolls such as Barbie and thosesimilar which followed.
