Berry 1946 on the front paste-down end-paper. Samuel Maunder 1785 - 1849 was an indefatigable compiler of reference works. ODNB notes: "Maunder's first book was The Little Lexicon or Multum in parvo of the English Language 1825. His next book The Treasury of Knowledge and Library of Reference 1830 sold over 200000 copies. The Biographical Treasury 1838 was frequently revised and reprinted and was brought up to date by W. L. R. Cates 1873 1882. An interesting feature used elsewhere is the snippets of information and moral maxims printed in the four margins of each page. Other Treasuries were devoted to belles lettres 1841 history 1844 natural history 1848 and geography 1856 and 1860." He died at his home in Gibson Sqaure Islington on 30 April 1849. The first edition of this work was published by Darton in 1847 copies at University of Virginia University of Indiana; this 1852 edition is found only in Indiana formerly the copy of Ruth E. Adomeit.
