Herald Express typed Violations of the Requirements of this Pass Will Result in Its Permanent Cancellation. No. 23 Director of Studio Publicity signed This Pass Not Valid Unless Signed by Holder on Reverse Side.†On the verso is a printed set of basic terms regarding the holder of the pass without Mr. Starr’s signature. About fine with the most minute trace of use. Constantinople Istanbul: R. Bahaeddin: Resne Fotografhânesi. Istanbul'da Bâb-i Âlî Caddesinde No. 85. pre 1923. No Binding. Very Good. Original large-sized silver gelatin photograph. Mounted on cardboard. 35x30 cm; photo area: 24x18 cm. The calligraphic studio title is embossed on the lower of the cardboard. Scratching "4" on the upper right of the printed area slight creasing on the upper right of the cardboard and chipped extremities. Overall a good image. Fine gelatin silver mounted on the original photographer's cardboard showing four children probably three girls and their brother in an attractive and highly collectible photographer's mise-en-scene. A dark and shadowy print. Bahaettin Rahmi Bediz one of the prominent Muslim photographers of nineteenth-century Crete witnessed many political upheavals including the 1896 Cretan uprising the Balkan and World wars the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire the foundation of the Republic of Turkey the population exchange between Turkey and Greece. Bediz was born in Istanbul in 1875. He attended schools in Istanbul and Crete due to his father Ibrahim Rahmi Efendi's civil service appointments in both towns. Following his father's death twenty-year-old Bediz dropped out of Mekteb-i Sultânî Galatasaray High School and moved to Crete. His interest in photography is believed to have begun by chance when he was once asked to take a photograph of a group who came to his stationery shop in Heraklion. Bediz's career is divided into four distinct periods. Between 1896 and 1909 he photographed Crete and published around 200 postcards. Fluent in French he followed European publications related to his profession and acquired equipment from Paris London and Vienna. Bediz also contributed to the development of photography on the island by organizing contests. In 1909 due to ongoing severe conflicts on the island he moved back to Istanbul and opened a studio called Resne across the Sublime Porte on the historical peninsula. In 1927 he moved to Izmir where he was commissioned by various museums as a private photographer and participated in a number of archeological excavations during the following nine years. From 1936 to 1948 he continued his career in Ankara working for various institutions such as the Turkish Historical Society and the Ulus Publishing House. Bediz left many historical photographs behind as well as an unpublished book on the theory and practice of photography when he died in Istanbul in 1951. These photographs in SALT Research collections not only provide clues on his personal journey but also constitute significant documents revealing the socio-political aspects of the time. El quinto volumen de dicha colección acoge una obra teatral de la vizcaína María Rita de Barrenechea Condesa del Carpio a la que acompañan los escritos de otras siete autoras dieciochescas de orígenes geográficos diversos. La selección de esos textos y el amplio estudio preliminar que acompaña la edición corren a cargo de Inmaculada Urzainqui. El propio Ararteko en la«Presentación» del volumen señala que la edición de la obra de la Condesa del Carpio supone reparar una injusticia históricapuesto que la que puede considerarse como la primera pluma femenina que dio el País Vasco ha sido ignorada por la propia historiografía literaria vascaVIII. Otro tanto podría decirse de casi todas las autoras que la acompañan en esta edición y en general de las voces femeninas del XVIII . Los estudios sobre la mujer han conocido un desarrollo extraordinario en los últimos años y la creación literaria femenina no ha permanecido ajena a esta corriente de interés creciente por todos los aspectos históricos y socio-culturales relacionados con la mujer.
