‎COOLIDGE ( William Auguste ).‎

‎(COLT, RIP). FRENCH, JIM (1932-2017). AMERICAN PHOTOGRAPHER, FILMMAKER AND PUBLISHER WHO FOUNDED COLT STUDIO.‎

‎Another Man: Photography by Jim French.‎

‎New York: State of Man, Inc. (1974). (1974). - Folio, 14-3/8 inches high by 11-1/4 inches wide. Tan cloth titled in gilt on the front cover and the spine, in a pictorial tan dust wrapper. The corners of the soiled dust jacket and head & tail of the jacket's spine are chipped, with a small piece out from the tail. [64] unnumbered pages, illustrated with black & white and color photographs of male nudes, mostly full-page. There is minor foxing to the endpapers as well as to the title page and last page. Very good in a good dust wrapper. First edition. The American photographer, filmmaker and publisher Jim French (1932-2017) created Colt Studio under the pseudonym of Rip Colt. A student of the Philadelphia Museum School of Art in the 1950's, Jim French served in the army, first in the reserves and then deployed on active duty in 1955. Upon his return to civilian life, French settled in New York City to pursue a career in fashion illustration. He formed the mail order company "Luger" to distribute homoerotic drawings and photographs of rugged men. In 1967, under the pseudonym of Rip Colt, French partnered with Lou Thomas to set up COLT Studio to market male physique photography. French's illustration "Longhorns - Dance", depicting two cowboys naked from the waist down except for their boots, achieved notoriety when it was appropriated by the Sex Pistols' manager and fashion designer Malcolm McLaren to illustrate a T-shirt. The company was raided by the police and McLaren charged with indecency. The image became associated with the punk movement when Sid Vicious and other members of the Sex Pistols wore the t-shirt as a visual provocation. Moving to Palm Springs, French continued to offer limited edition prints for sale and participated in exhibitions of his work in New York and in London, where Nick Knight curated the exhibition "The Photography of Punk". ‎PAOLO ROVERSI: STUDIO‎

‎Gottingen, GERMANY & New York, Steidl/Dangin Publishers., 2004, First Edition 1/1000. (ISBN: 3-86521-164-X) Cloth, 4to, np, 60 color gatefold illustrations. Texts in English. "Paolo Roversi is known internationally for his romantic, intense, and ethereal fashion images and portraits: photographs that quiver on the edge of their own seemingly fragile existence. A typical Roversi picture appears as if captured in the process of becoming - it develops on the page before our very eyes or, depending on perspective, it might simply vanish into the ether. Since 1980 Roversi has worked primarily with 8 x 10 inch Polaroids, and rarely on location. Designed as a series of sixty gatefolds, at first glance the book appears to be a collection of empty pages. The experience of looking is akin to that of peeling away the leaf from a Polaroid - out of the blackness an image is revealed as if by magic. In images that represent nearly two decades of work, "Studio" offers a self-portrait of the artist and a window into the place where he creates his art. These photographs are a mix of both the published and the highly personal, but all have the intimacy engendered by that place where Roversi feels most at home". "Studio" is truly one of the most opulent photographic books of the last decade. A pristine example of the 2004 first Steidl edition of this uncommon gem limited to one thousand NUMBERED (#300/1000) copies in the publisher's unopened shipping carton, as issued.
