c.1895. . Hand-coloured albumen print. Three-part panorama good tonal range and in good condition photographer's title and number in negative. Despite being one of the most artistic and broad-ranging photographers of Japan in the late nineteenth century little is known about Tamotsu Enami and many assume him to be the same person as N. Enami. He trained under Ogawa Kazumara before setting up his own studio in 1892. His studio was successful and had branches as far a field as Hong Kong and the Philippines. It was the only Japanese studio to produce both views and portraits of all sizes and types. Nagasaki lies at the head of a long bay which forms the best natural harbour on the island of Kyushu and is home to one of Japan's oldest international ports becoming a 'free port' in 1859. As much of the city was destroyed when it became the target of the world's second atomic bomb attack these two 19th century views are therefore of great historical importance. [c.1895]. unknown

This third edition of the book published by YEM Publications has been updated and enlarged to incorporate new information gathered over the years and many new photographs that have been added to my archive. I have made sure that the revised text comprises the latest information available on the subject. Many nation states were created in the former Ottoman territories in Europe, Asia and Africa. I have not included the individual photographic histories of these countries but endeavoured to focus primarily on photography within the present boundaries of the Republic of Turkey. A list of photographers who worked in the Ottoman Empire has been provided to assist all those who are interested in the history of photography in Turkey and the Middle East. The names of photographers that I have come across in documents written in Ottoman Turkish script have been given as spelt. The style of the photographs which artistically combines high and low art allows to attribute the authorship to the Grundworth studio which is known to have been producing erotic postcards in Paris from the 1890s to the 1930s. Like most of the studios engaged in production of erotic photographs and postcards of the time little is known about it as despite the widespread circulation of these cards their production and distribution was illegal in France hence anonymity was essential. Given the time span and a number of different styles the name is unlikely to represent an individual photographer but more likely a group of photographers who were perhaps better known but wanted to hide their real identities.
