Chelsea Campbell Setting Sail with Megan Piontkowski's "Feminist Ships": "Feminist Ships at its core is a history lesson celebrating the lives and achievements of women on the water. It begins chronologically and fittingly with an Inuit boat called the umiak nicknamed the 'women's boat' because it was paddled by women to transport people and belongings. The book continues to move across centuries and around the world including the ships of notorious female pirates like Grace O'Malley and Ching Shiih; Molly Kool the first licensed female sea captain in North America; Sisters Under Sail a sailing education program for young girls; and Women on Waves an organization that provides abortions and women's healthcare in international waters exempt from restrictive laws. The last page features the rowboat built by writer Julia Holmes who takes solo expeditions retracing an ancestor's journey from New York to New Orleans. "Intimate handwritten notes on the book's pages allude to sailors' personal log books. The loose cursive describes the female sailors and the illustrations of their ships from a sailboat to a Chinese junk from a canoe to an Irish galley. "Megan's illustrative style renders her screen printed ships in flat wiry line work on bright colorful paper that extends the palette of her maritime signal flags. Every few pages the color switches abruptly from charcoal to intense blue to stark white to goldenrod ending with a vivid red. These pages become a unified pictorial field as each boat's bow or stern intrudes into another page. This implies an interconnected history which can be fully seen when the book is unfurled like a scroll. When completely laid out the pages resemble a series of flags that belong hung amongst the sails of a ship signaling new untold stories. "The idea that sailing is the exclusive domain of thick-bearded ruthless pirates and burly male sailors in white and blue uniforms is false. Entre 1899 y 1900 Max Uhle 1856-1944 considerado el padre del a arqueolog�a cient�fica del Per� logr� con sus excavaciones en el complejo de las huacas del Sol y de la Luna establecer casi toda la historia prehisp�nica del valle de Moche Trujillo. Fue el primero en establecer la edad correcta de ese complejo y catalogarlo en lo que hoy se conoce como moche o mochica desterrando la idea de que eran obras de los chim� o de los incas. Tambi�n document� de modo muy preciso las espectaculares tumbas del mismo periodo que encontr� en el valle. Las ruinas de Moche fue escrito en 1903; sin embargo ve la luz reci�n 100 a�os despu�s debido a que Uhle buscaba perfeccionar constantemente su manuscrito. Hoy en esta traducci�n de Peter Kaulicke que incluye numerosas fotograf�as e ilustraciones se puede evaluar su enorme trascendencia confirmada por trabajos posteriores y recientes. This book documents a project Sammy Lee did when a graduate student in architecture. Sammy Lee: "My proposed design had a bookbindery artist studios and a community space. When I designed this building project � this lot was considered "cursed" by the locals. There were an Asian grocery market and an adult media store hidden behind a billboard that always featured beer commercials. The land was covered with overgrown weeds potholes and trash. Despite its desolate condition at that time I noticed three willow trees in the center lot and felt somehow connected to the land and wanted to reinvigorate the site. "There are many notions of three in this book. The land had overall a triangular shape three willow trees the building and the site incorporated three different flows of traffic � pedestrians motorists cyclists � and the project was for three women tenants me and two friends. In the book the idea of three is explored by three different shapes of sheets three sections per viewing and three pleats. Also there are images such as three willows three friends three mailboxes in the book. The shape of the book is the actual shape of the building site." Sammy Lee general statement: "Three Willows Bindery documents the personal narrative of discovering and reinvigorating a forgotten space. The book is comprised of three different types of geometric pages varying in shape and size. Collated and bound together the pages' contents can expand and interact in multiple permutations based on their folds much like a map can be refolded in various ways. In addition to showing different views of the space the pleats of the pages also resemble the topography of the land: the overall shape of the book mirrors the site. Studio SML/k, hardcover

Text and images were printed using photopolymer plates and reduction linoleum blocks. Fonts are Optima Bold and Gill Sans Light. Handbound in quarter-cloth with cover paper of handmade walnut dyed flax. 3.5 x 3.5" illustration inset of quilted papers which were designed with the artist's mother. Suzanne Sawyer: "The legacy of quilting is ubiquitous in American history so much so that it has lost some of the meaning it once held. But its history is rich and perhaps best typified in African American culture such as with the quilters of Gee's Bend. The quilters descendants of former slaves living in rural Alabama developed a unique improvisational style of quilting using just remnants of clothing. Their quilts have become world renowned for their simple geometric patterns and have been compared to the work of modern abstract painters. However the quilts were initially made out of necessity and with whatever materials were on hand. ". I was inspired by the resourcefulness of the Gee's Bend quilters and the strength of spirit and hope inherent in keeping one's hands busy and one's mind focused on something higher; whether it be beauty or craft and whether out of necessity or aesthetic pleasure. In a similar manner my mother and grandmother ingrained in me a love of craft and creativity to keep my hands busy and my mind focused on something higher. "In my work in general I explore human relationship themes such as duality identity and anonymity through sculpture handmade paper; books drawings letterpress printing and printmaking. Particularly I am interested in how we are known by others and ourselves how we perceive one another or even how we might wish to remain unknown or disguised. I often use plants and other forms found in nature as metaphors for relational concepts. And I am deeply influenced by my experiences growing up in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. "Eder J. Williams McKnight wrote a collection of six poems for the project . This book is Sawyer's thesis project for her MFA in Book Arts for the University of Alabama . The images of the book were inspired by aerial landscapes and microscopic images of plants particularly some of the plants that are native to the Southeastern United States and to which I have a deep-rooted connection through memories of growing up in that area. The book includes images inspired by forsythia wisteria dogwood azalea rhododendron and jasmine among others. Eder too is descended from a long line of women crafters and quilters.
