‎HOFFMANN, Professor Louis. Angelo John Lewis.:‎

‎MAGICAL TITBITS.‎

‎FIRST EDITION 1911 divided into two parts, Part 1 Miscellaneous Tricks (15), Part 2, Recollections of Hartz, (23) with short biography of Hartz. Small 8vo, approximately 185 x 125 mm, 7¼ x 5 inches, portrait frontispiece of Hoffmann, 58 line drawings in the text, pages: viii, 1 - 220 plus L'Envoi page which is not numbered, list of Hoffmann's works on the verso of half - title, original publisher's pictorial burgundy cloth, gilt lettering to spine and upper cover, white magical hand to upper cover. Slight shelf wear to edges, a few small pale stains to lower cover, pastedowns have slight red bleed to lower edge from covers, half - title and last endpapers have spotted age - browning, portrait and title have very pale age - browning, slight foxing to fore - edges, tiny indentation on upper cover, neat old ink name and date on first free endpaper, otherwise a very good copy. Joseph Michael Hartz (1836 - 1903). When Hartz was about twelve years old, he saw one of Robert - Houdin's performances, convincing him to become a magician. In 1859, he performed professionally at the Adelaide Gallery in London under the name of Hartz with an act consisting of apparatus made entirely of glass, or as he called it, crystal. In 1867, Hartz and his younger brother, Augustus (Gus), travelled to New York where in 1870 they established the first magic shop in America, the Hartz Magic Repository located on Broadway. In 1887, Hartz transformed a popular trick of the day, The Inexhaustible Hat, into his own version called "Devil of a Hat." Many of Hartz's contributions are as an originator, rather than as an inventor. He improved upon many standard tricks of his day and was considered by many of his peers to be a "magician's magician." ‎HOOPER, William.‎

‎Rational recreations, ... The second edition, corrected.‎

‎4 volumes. With numerous illustrations on 65 folding plates engraved by J. Lodge, all coloured by a contemporary hand, and woodcut diagrams and other illustrations in text. Second edition of a popular recreational science handbook written by William Hooper (1770 - 1810). The first edition appeared in 1774. It is chiefly a compilation of works from writers on recreative philosophy. While the book is intended to be scientific and educational, it is also clearly designed as a manual for a magician or someone who wishes to put on public science demonstrations, noting what one should hide from the audience and what one should let them see. It explains and illustrates the principles of mathematics and science through a series of mathematical, mechanical, optical, electrical, magnetic, pneumatic, hydrological and pyrotechnic experiments, including some performed with cards. ''The electricity experiments described in vol. iii are mostly from Priestley's <I>History of Electricty< / I>. Plate i gives an illustration of Priestly's machine which was occasionally turned by a windmill placed on top of the house'' (Wheeler Gift). The 4th volume includes a mathematical card trick (pp. 276 - 279), illustrated in the accompanying plate. The information in the section devoted to pyrotechnics stems mainly from Guyot and includes a description of his method of imitating artificial fireworks. The plates in this section show artificial lightning, among other things .Other plates show a carriage that goes without any external force, an air chronometer, a portable camera obscura, the magical dial and theatre, an organ, the refraction of light, optical appearances, an air gun and a thermometer. With the sewing of volume 3 broken and one quire nearly detached; each volume with engraved bookplate of the 1790 Worcester Library (printed in red) on the paste - down and later embossed stamps of Worcester Public Library on the plates and some text pages; offsetting of colours to adjacent plates; some foxing; a few plates with tears restored (especially plate IV in volume 1, whose upper corner is also torn off, without loss to the printed image). Popular work on recreational science containing many experiments and tricks for public demonstrations or magic shows. <I>Hall, Bibliogr. of books on conjuring 180 - 4; Hall, Old conjuring books, p.118, 155; Mottelay, p. 241; Philip H110.2 - 5; Wheeler Gift 508.< / I>‎

‎HOOPER, WILLIAM.:‎

‎RATIONAL RECREATIONS IN WHICH THE PRINCIPLES OF NUMBERS AND NATURAL PHILOSOPHY ARE CLEARLY AND COPIOUSLY ELUCIDATED, BY A SERIES OF EASY, ENTERTAINING, INTERESTING EXPERIMENTS. AMONG WHICH ARE ALL THOSE COMMONLY PERFORMED WITH THE CARDS.‎

‎4 volumes in bound in 2, complete set, 4th edition corrected, 1794. 8vo, 220 x 130 mm, 8½ x 5¼ inches, 65 folding engraved illustrations, pages: (4), xvi, 267; (4), xii, 280; (4), xii, 296; (4), xvi, 367, rebound in half leather over marbled sides, gilt rules and lettering to spine. The spine of the second volume should read "VOL. III & IV" but the binder has omitted to stamp "& IV", on the second volume, also the leather around the title has lightened slightly, a couple of pages slightly dusty, very occasional slight fingermark, light brown staining to 2 lower margins, small ink spot to 1 lower margin, occasional very pale browning to margins, 16 small ink notes (1 or 2 words written above the text), small closed tear to 1 margin, neatly repaired, small hole in 1 page with loss of page number, small chip to 1 fore - edge, fore - edge margin to 3 plates browned, inner margin browned on 1 plate, very pale offsetting on a few plates, tiny hole in 1 plate margin. Bindings tight and firm. A very good sturdy set. The contents of each volume are set out on the half - titles, Volume I: Arithmetical and Mechanical Experiments; Volume II: Experiments in Optics, Chromatics and Acoustics; Volume III: Electrical and Magnetical Experiments; Volume IV: Experiments in Pneumatics, Hydrology, and Pyrotechnics. With an Appendix of Miscellaneous Recreations. This Appendix (pages 175 - 295), contains the conjuring, magic and card tricks, "Several of the Recreations in this Appendix have, in fact, but little relation to experimental philosophy, especially those that depend on a dextrous manoeuvre; but as experiments of this kind are commonly found in books of mathematical recreations, it seemed requisite to insert some of the most entertaining among them at the end of this treatise" (author's note). See Toole Stott, A Bibliography of English Conjuring 1581 - 1876, page 137 No. 392. For the fireworks section (pages 127 - 171), see Chris Philip, A Bibliography of Firework Books, page 73, No. H110.2 - 5. Philip points out that Hooper states that much of this work stems from Guyot (Nouvelles Recreations Physiques et Mathematiques - 1786). "We shall here add the description of a new method of imitating artificial fireworks, which appears to be the invention of the ingenious M. Guyot" (Volume IV page 156).
