Storia incredibile ma vera (1833)
ill. "Storia incredibile ma vera" è l'ultimo scritto in prosa di Lorenzo da Ponte (1749-1838), poeta di corte ed insigne letterato veneto noto come il librettista di Mozart (Don Giovanni, Le nozze di Figaro, Così fan tutte), conosciuto come avventuriero e libertino al pari di Casanova ma anche colui che ha gettato il buon seme, e ne ha coltivato l'espandersi, della cultura italiana negli Stati Uniti. Il libello, in due parti, datato 1833, Nuova-Jorca - ora per la prima volta stampato integralmente - è stato scritto quando Da Ponte aveva 84 anni con l'intento di completare le sue Memorie e di narrare le delusioni patite, i problemi finanziari connessi, le angherie e persecuzioni subìte per aver "promosso e diffuso l'opera italiana, invitando per la prima volta in America una vera e propria compagnia che cantasse in italiano... e per aver promosso la costruzione del primo teatro dedicato al melodramma". Naturalmente a carico suo, tanto che dovette più volte fuggire per nascondersi ai creditori, il tutto nella speranza di far "rinascere, con l'opera, l'interesse per lo studio della letteratura e della lingua italiana, ultimamente attenuatasi" che Da Ponte aveva in precedenza contribuito, con spirito pionieristico, a diffondere come editore, come libraio, come tipografo...

1880. Very good overall. Eight lovely ballet/theatrical dance costumes illustrated in full color on one large sheet. These chromolithograph illustrations were likely for a book on dance. Printed in two rows of four figures. Each female figure features a different richly colored skirt with overlay off the shoulders blouse and hat ribbons and hair styles each with its own back drop. 17 x 13 3/4". A few small pinholes at margins which look to have been used for calibration of printing otherwise bright and clean. <br/><br/> unknown
