L'incontro della poesia teatrale con il canto ha visto da sempre fronteggiarsi e incrociarsi i due sistemi principali - quello letterario e quello sonoro che concorrono alla costituzione dell'opera in musica. Da un lato la poesia obbedisce a proprie leggi, ma viene anche a patti con le necessità musicali e talvolta vi si conforma; dall'altro il canto riveste le strutture metriche e le configurazioni strofiche, forzandole però e in qualche caso indirizzandole secondo le proprie esigenze. Questo volume, che presenta una versione ampliata e aggiornata del saggio "Istituti metrici e formali", compreso nel sesto volume della "Storia dell'opera italiana" della casa editrice EDT, si propone di tracciare le linee di sviluppo fondamentali di questo "corpo a corpo", lungo una parabola cronologica che parte dall'inizio del Seicento, e si conclude nei primi decenni del Novecento: l'ambito di vita di quella che si può definire "opera italiana".
